Here we GROW again!! (pulling CIDRs for out of season join-up) Vlog 281

  • Already beginning the process of creating another lambing group which if this session works as planned, will be September!!
These ewes are joining up with rams out-of-season, which means it's not their natural cycle. However, there are ways to schedule lambing groups by using tools like CIDRS, teaser rams, or even light manipulation.
I choose CIDRs only because I've had success in the past with them.
In this video Carissa and I pull the CIDRs I inserted 13 days ago, sort ewes in specific ram group, then we add the boys.
It should take 18-24 hours before we see any action...
SO STAY TUNED for the next video to see how we make out!

Sandi, when it comes time to sort, don't try to remember who goes left, right, or straight. Get some colored electrician's tape that matches your paint colors and put the proper tape on the handles for the sort section - blue on the right handle, red on the left. That way you don't have to remember and go through the mental exercise each time an ewe comes up to the sorter. The tape is cheap and it will save all of the mental exercise, and I'll bet that you won't feel as tired if you don't have to do so much mental work.

This is a really good idea. When you are tired the brain is slow to load and the body is slow to react. Anything to help get the response triggered saves some energy! I'm a fan of lists on post it notes for my tasks. Just seeing it in writing helps me get on with whatever is next.

Being a city boy from NY I am amazed at the amount of work that you perform to put food on my table. However, you must have infinite control of your emotions seeing how affectionate you are with the baby lambs knowing all the time that when they reach the magic 100 pounds they are off to the abattoir. It’s amazing to see a black lamb near death and with hard hard work from you, it’s now standing. That lamb was near death and you worked so hard tubing it and giving it a bottle. You never gave up. With all those sheep to care for, you kept trying to save that one lamb. You work hard for all of them, but that black one stands out. Now, no one would ever guess how lifeless it had been.

My wife found this todayThey ran to the groceries, they filled up their carts,
They emptied the Tops and Price Chopper and Walmart,
They panicked and fought and then panicked some more,
Then they rushed to their homes and they locked all the doors.
The food will be gone! The milk eggs and cheese!
The yogurt! The apples! The green beans and peas!
The stores have run out, now what will we do?
They’ll be starving and looting and nothing to do!
Then they paused, and they listened a moment or two.
And they did hear a sound, rising over the fear,
It started out far, then began to grow near.
But this sound wasn’t sad, nor was it new,
The farms were still doing what farms always do.
The food was still coming, though they’d emptied the shelves,
The farms kept it coming, though they struggled themselves,
Though the cities had forgotten from where their food came,
The farms made them food every day, just the same.
Through weather and critics and markets that fall,
The farms kept on farming in spite of it all.
    They farmed without thank yous.
    They farmed without praise.
They farmed on the hottest and coldest of days.
They’d bought all the food, yet the next day came more,
And the people thought of something they hadn’t before.
Maybe food, they thought, doesn’t come from a store.
Maybe farmers, perhaps, mean a little bit more.
*Borrowed from a fellow farmer *

They don't realize their actions have caused these shortages. And the stores didn't react fast enough to implement quantity control. So to the farmers, I am sorry the burden has affect you.

Hi sandi, i hot a taste of lamb rescue the other night. Driving down a major hwy, noticed a small group of lambs heading straight for the road. I blew my horn which deterred them and sent them back into the tree nursery. Got them when i came around the corner and called our local police. When i told her there were sheep on the side road she said what? Then she said sheep? Then she said can you stick with them . I said sur which i did. Boy are they stubborn but also scared to death. Long story short, the police came one way and the owner came the other
We got them into the truck finally, one actually came up to me as if to say thanks. It was really sweet. What a great ending for all.

You are right to keep the rams away from the ewes. The first 17 days after the CEDR is better served by a teaser cleanses the first egg flush then bang the rams will get ewes real quick and clean day 17 to 34. As for light manipulation check out Fucundin, CSRIO research Australia. In passing you are well served to have that wonderful assistant with you and you personally are a great ambassador to the sheep and associated farm animal production enterprises. In finishing this rant might I add that in these bizarre times of self isolation your postings would have undoubtedly soothed many a despairing fellow human.

Frank Bertola, you are so right. I'm a high school math teacher in Oregon. The closest I've come to sheep is a summer spent on an egg ranch that did a side business of purebred suffolk breeding. I loved that summer (I was thirteen). During the first couple of weeks of the lockdown I literally watched all of Sandi's videos - Twice! it was the only way I could stay sane in these very troubling times. I've even started watching her husband's channel -- learning all about where my food comes from. I've even started to watch a few other farming channels (when I run out of new Sandi Videos). She's been a sanity-saver. If I lived close enough, I'd be certain that all of my meat came from her. Alas, I don't. When the lockdown eases, I might start researching local farmers (I live in a rural community) and see what local sources are available.

There's a lamb with black face with bilateral white marks half way down its muzzle ....... it makes its face so very cute. Thanks for this video. It addressed a query I had about cidrs versus nature mating I had. I'm from a once a year lambing system in extensive setting so I just didn't 'get it'. This video answered all my questions well done. YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. I think one of the last five ewes in no longer pregnant.

Jayne Horn correct, one in there isn’t. But needs the higher calorie nutrition, so she’s in there. Only 4 left to deliver.

Does the ceder go inside the ewes uterus, or just in her vagina? When you took it out it was really fast. Didn't look like it hurt them.

Sandi Brock lolol yes it would have but it’s still heart breaking ! Would not do for me to be a sheep farmer, I would be a sheep horder , I would actually sleep with them when they birthing, I have always prayed you would soon get your coffee/ break room then you could be closer to them especially during time of giving birth to all those gorgeous babies!! Maybe some of your family will read this knowing you need break room and wanting one too !!

    Sandi,
Thank you, as always, for making amazing videos. I just LOVE all of the speckled face & legs babies you have running around!!! They are so different, but in a good way, a super cute way!!!
I know you have said you have had a little trouble with vlog ideas. Have you ever thought of asking Carissa, if she would be so kind as to record her point of view of her time with the sheep as well as anything else she does there?? I think it would be amazing to see things from a different perspective. For her to show her lamb/bottle whispering she does. For her to show us her day!! It's just a thought.
I'm going to agree with the others that have said you should name that little black lamb, that you literally brought back to life, Licorice!!!
Thank you again, Sandi, for all you do for your family, your friends, your husband's business, your sheep, and for everything you do for your viewers, your RUclips family. We all love watching your videos. We all go through withdrawals while awaiting your next video drop!!! Thank you again for all you do for everyone!!!

I'm guessing she'll be culled. Sandi will know it's a risk to keep her, because she may have had a damaged/destroyed uterus from the decaying lamb. If she makes it through this, another pregnancy would likely kill her. Sad, but likely true, too. But perhaps I'm wrong.

i love seeing how different sheep farming is where you are compared too where i´m from.
Lambing is the most diffrent i see, we just send the sheeps and their lambs up too the mountains in like the end of May for a few months and we dont check on them just let them doo their thing and then we go get them in September, but the reason we can do that is mainly because we have so few predators here mainly artic foxes, minks and eagles.
Wish you best of luck from Iceland. You Sandi Brock have a new fan :)

In reference to the daylight influence, they are short daylight breeders. Limiting the daylight hours is the answer you were looking for. Same as goats. If my memory hasn't failed me, seems like the goal is 8 to 10 hours of daylight. Yes it would be hard to do in your britespan, but I still love the open feeling and natural light this building style gives.
