I love hearing each of these gentlemen speak. I believe each of these gentlemen respect each other’s intelligence. But gosh I wish there could be more deference when it comes to allowing a peer, to finish their thought before interrupting. Not pointing fingers, hell nobody cares what I think anyway. But sometimes you gotta put aside your need to present new information, in favor of allowing for the fair progression of a conversation. When you have that impulse to add information, wether additive, debate or otherwise, just log it and come back to it when your peer has finished their own thought. We love when all of you banter together. We revel in hearing ALL of you talk, not JUST the smartest man in the room.
Predominantly I took great interest in this video. There was a wonderful chemistry between the three participants and the things they talked about were things I pay attention to. Mr. Tyson along with Brian Greene are at this time my two favorite physicists to listen to. They almost never bore me with anything they cover.

I have a question. The universe is said to be 13.78billion years old, but seeing as we judge a year by how long it takes the earth to orbit our sun, and how time is relative, by which metric are they using to measure the universe to be 13.78billion years old?
Just because the reference of 1 year, is subjective, does not mean that it's not accurate. You seem to be caught on semantics. Let's say I grab a pinch of sand out of a bucket and say "there are 500 pinches of sand in that bucket" and then a larger man steps in and does the same thing, but his number is 450 pinches, there is still the same amount of sand, just our reference unit is different. So the year is simply a unit in which we describe the time since the big bang, but it IS accurate. If you want to know how they reached that number, both Space Time and the show Cosmos have an episode on measuring the history of the universe. Spacetime is more advanced, but that episode is easy to come to grips with. Cosmos is an enjoyable show, if you haven't seen it.
"you already answer your question bro we always use to measure time the way we perceive it" But it seems like years don't make any sense if we go back 4.5million years before the earth was formed to even orbit the sun to call it a year. time is relative and years are solely based on the earth orbiting the sun, so years don't make any sense before the earth.
"Just because the reference of 1 year, is subjective, does not mean that it's not accurate." I've never said it;s not accurate, I just want to know exactly how they've measured it in years if years are entirely dependent on the earth orbiting the sun. "Let's say I grab a pinch of sand out of a bucket and say "there are 500 pinches of sand in that bucket" and then a larger man steps in and does the same thing, but his number is 450 pinches, there is still the same amount of sand, just our reference unit is different." But, as you say, there is still the same amount of sand in the bucket, but that's not relative like how time is. I've seen both those shows but I'm pretty sure they didn;t answer my question in the way I'm forming it.
PolemicContrarian the unit of one year was invented by humans based on earth's rotation around the sun, but the amount of time it measures is the same no matter what and doesn't require an earth and a sun to exist. You're logic seems very weird to me. By your logic, saying "the pyramids were built 2500 years bc" is also stupid, because there was no point of reference to count those 2500 years from. What matters is that there is one now and that we can make sense of units.

Well done matt For getting to the end of that with out loosing it, in the face of never being able to finish your point!
.
Lol. Look at Matt's response when Neil says that entering a black hole you first see all the events of our universe unfold. Matt addressed that topic in his series. Making his response here both hilarious and accepting of other people/ideas. Good job Matt.
Neil: "Yo Matt, I'm really happy for you, I'ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!"
Merman your great. Keep up the comedy.
Danger Ranger “somebody let mike huckabee know” 😂😂
Matt is awesome on PBS Spacetime. If you want to go the next level, PBS Spacetime is no joke. Heavy duty physics going on there. Highly recommend.
Full episodes on this channel vibe really well with my activity on youtube. You should totally keep doing what has already been done.
+Jorgen Pakieto glad you're enjoying them!
Thank Odin there are shows like this on RUclips!
Neil’s personality is bigger than the visible universe
So happy this is on youtube!!
Let the guy speak FFS!
This is by far my favorite star talk ever
Why bother to have a guest if you're just going to talk over them so much?
NAPS?!? “Not I” cried me. I love Space Time(and of course Star Talk) exploring subjects that are utterly enrapturing to anyone with the mental wattage to contemplate them and their implications.
What makes you think Tyson is the smartest man in the room?
Predominantly I took great interest in this video. There was a wonderful chemistry between the three participants and the things they talked about were things I pay attention to. Mr. Tyson along with Brian Greene are at this time my two favorite physicists to listen to. They almost never bore me with anything they cover.
"Cankles". Words I never expected Matt O'Dowd to say, lmao.
Eugene did a great job. I love when he's a guest.
I usually get annoyed when someone jokes over a series discussion.
But Eugene is freaking hilarious!
comedians are usually pretty clever, and VERY high in openness, which usually means they are interested in A) fun conversation and B) science! Love it Neil and I love Eugene Mirman's work!
Neil: Interrupts everyone always
Also Neil : Doesn't let other interrupt him
Was is a pole shift or a pole lock and how many degrees to the two?
Great episode guys. Hope for many more...
So does Matt O’Dowd go on other podcasts? I’d like to hear him talk at length.
I'd like to hear him talk. Period.
I love Gene from bobs burgers, this is by far my favorite scientific trio, we need more of this.
Never closed my bible faster
I love this
I love you
Pablo Valgañón I closed it a long time ago :)
Ariel Kozak I don't get if it's a joke against religion. Or just a Christian who loves science. But Tysons not an athiest.
hes not not an atheist..
Man it’s three of my favorite ppl in one video. So cool
Neil keeps interuppting everyone, so annoying...
Touching Matt, Touchy Touchy Neil
Matt is absolutely brilliant, incredibly thoughtful and careful about what he says!
Definitely. Runs a great show with amazing content. Very concise, knowledgeable and seems to just be an all around cool dude. I'd imagine he's be that one bloke who everyone likes in a circle of friends.
This guy on the left is so funny, really fun episode what a wonderful dynamic between you 3.
Eugene Mirman plays the character of Gene on the show Bob's Burgers.
@@novaplum1617 Makes sense~! thanks
Tells everyone „ I’m the director of the planetarium“ 5mins later : I’m not a planet guy....
I'm not a geologist neither
@@derickparrish833 Are you the director at the Department of Geological Sciences?
Very nice discussion!!
This is cool, and I dig Neil's excitement over the topics but Matt's frustration over being cut off every time he speaks is understandable and contagious
I thought it was a great combination. Matt gives the technicals and Neil gives examples
Simulation discussion starts at 16:01
henkeball thank you
Deserves top comment
Fantastic talk. Thanks.
Cosmos is an enjoyable show, if you haven't seen it.
you already answer your question bro we always use to measure time the way we perceive it
"you already answer your question bro we always use to measure time the way we perceive it"
But it seems like years don't make any sense if we go back 4.5million years before the earth was formed to even orbit the sun to call it a year. time is relative and years are solely based on the earth orbiting the sun, so years don't make any sense before the earth.
"Just because the reference of 1 year, is subjective, does not mean that it's not accurate."
I've never said it;s not accurate, I just want to know exactly how they've measured it in years if years are entirely dependent on the earth orbiting the sun.
"Let's say I grab a pinch of sand out of a bucket and say "there are 500 pinches of sand in that bucket" and then a larger man steps in and does the same thing, but his number is 450 pinches, there is still the same amount of sand, just our reference unit is different."
But, as you say, there is still the same amount of sand in the bucket, but that's not relative like how time is.
Matt is awesome! Love his PBS videos.
love neil but he needs to stop interrupting matt all the time
26:50 'Things that can't be unheard,' starring Neil deGrasse Tyson.. LOL OMG XD
Hey Matt, you are great
I love PBS Space Time
"We'll have been a thing, and then not a thing. That's not so bad."
Eugene Mirman, making death un-scary since 2017.
That guy is hilarious!
Eugene should do comedy full time.
41:25 when asking 'how does this apply to me?' is brilliant, rather than obnoxious, lol!
More with Matt O'Dowd, please. I love Chuck Nice, but Matt us awesome for discussions with Neil.
Oh man Neil you gotta learn to shutup and let other people talk sometimes
41:24 The one time when asking 'how does this apply to me?' is brilliant, and not obnoxious, lol!
43:23 "But we would be harmed" lol
