Chuck Nice is the best co-host ever!
Came down to the comments to say the same.
I didn't like Chuck at first..but now I love him...in a manly sort of way.
So nice they named him... Nice.
I hate him more than all. Cannot stand him. All he does is tell bad jokes abs butchers everyone's names.
@@montanamike7948 You're thenonly exemption. He's gotten better and wiser amd more connected, tbh.
*Your personal astrophysicist* !!!
Love this show, always listening
Doc dropping the F-bomb at 35:15..Awesome! And as a combat veteran I'm glad he reserved its use for such an important concept! Way to be, Doctor!!
My favorite part of each episode is when they bring out the questions and Neil acts all shocked that patreon supporters get there questions answered first. It's so funny just seeing him start to smile a bit before hand then just go "Whaaaaattt, no way???!!!"
Neil I have no idea if you read these comments, but you literally made me into the person I am, and now I'm going off to college to study physics.
If I had him around as a teenager I'd be on a similar path probably because of this guy. He's such a positive role model
You'll learn that most people in the field of physics are complete A-holes, Neil is an outlier. I eventually made the switch from physics to engineering.
That's kind of presumptuous.
Dude!!! Yes, discover something great! Good luck, be dedicated!
Im sure neil would love to hear that!
More Neil and Chuck now please
Always watch during lunch break and learn so much! Thanks Neil and Chuck!~
Dear Neil, please get Elon Musk to join your show for an episode! 🔥 Ask him about mars!!
Twerk Nation Yessss!!! 🤓
Tyson and Musk!
Twerk Nation Elon talks crazy about Mars and then his Tesla car sales go up, works everytime.
ezzz9 of course not, just like you couldn't live on the moon without an incredible amount of engineering and construction. once we are on mars they can focus on building enclosed environments for living, it's a higher risk of cancer due to more cosmic radiation and from the solar radiation as well, but the soil can be filtered and so can the gasses in the thin atmosphere to create things we need, it's definitely not impossible, just not easy like living on earth is. giving up isn't proving it's impossible, trying and failing would though.
Shut up you dirty mongrel
I'm a huge military nut and a fan of Neil DeGrasse Tyson and really enjoy StarTalk, so this is just a treasure trove for me.
All three of you are super entertaining!
Damn, having a personal astrophysicist is amazing!
"Shell Shock"... "Battle Fatigue"... "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder"... More syllables, no more answers.
George Carlin
Also do you have the time?😁
15:56 I love this man's enthusiasm!!!! Great scientist/teacher."Give me one more question"😁🤣😂 Neil was too ready!!!
Legend says that the gif of Neil cringing (from cosmos) was recorded right after Chuck Nice told him a joke.
Kuma h
Thanks for being my own astrophysicist, Neil. Ya'll are great.
Imagine these type of videos in trending section of YT
The algorithm is based off what people want to see, most people dont want to be educated, so, sadly i dont think that will ever happen
You guys ROCK!!! We need Neil for president!!!
9:53 That George Carlin reference made me smile :)
I love this guy...his guests are always entertaining...of course he is too.
Great channel with very interesting topics.
Love the long videos
as a former Egress tech on the F-22, it fills me with pride to hear Neil talk about how beautiful the canopy transparency is
Bet you never saw that coming? lol
more i didn't expect to see a discussion on the science of military tech designed to save lives.
Pythos Sapunov I think that new canopy top is ugly, alway gets screwed up when in a dog fight .
Love me Neil... PLEASE!!
Brazil is listening Dr. deGresse ! 🇧🇷
Great podcast session. Thanks!
Thank you Cosmic Queries. I like that your responses were mostly positive.
Regarding the first question asked about PTSD, while there are probably genetic markers, and certainly behavioral differences, ultimately it seems to be 50/50 nature and nurture. The implications of the "nurture" are interesting though.
Importantly, this man presumes none of his unit previously had PTSD. If you're already been through something traumatic, it seems to equip you somewhat. It would seem that there's even an exponential correlation going back to early childhood. The earlier something bad happens (the curve probably goes flat before memories are being constructed but peaks when your stream of consciousness "begins") the more impact it has, exponentially so. Thus the older one becomes, the more intense the event needs to be to put you off course. If your course has already been skewed somehow by trauma (especially if repeated or ongoing), an equivocal trauma at a later date may not register at all. There are so many variables to it.
An inverse to the numbed soldier is the dimwitted soldier though. Intense depression or mania, whether or not it comes from nature or nurture, either extreme can present an apparent lack of reaction to a traumatic situation.
Love this show.
When I was a kid, I had a crush on redheaded Mary Roach when she was writing for reader's digest
Caaan't say it's any different now. Rocking that silver, Mary!
Gross, she looks like a grandma.
I do love this show.
Great episode! And that lady is absolutely adorable!
35:14 I don't think I've heard Neil curse before lol...
Alex Brockwell h
watch his video with logic
He said bitch early in the video
Watch Joe Rogan interview him lol
Oh multiple times! 🤣
Pete Carroll's sister is pretty smart
At 14:25 she makes a reference to a weapon that sounds very similar to what happed to the US embassy in Cuba
அருமை ஸ்டார்டாக் நான் ட்யுன்இன் ரேடியோவில் கேட்கிறேன்
I hear star talk via tunein radio
Two things at the beginning made me very happy:
3:28 possible Goonies reference
3:48 I was interviewed for my HS newspaper talking about a "nexus chiken gun" (or something; spelling on purpose). Weird flashback when she said this!
I LOVE Mary Roach I'm so excited that she was on your show again
She wasn't very impressive
@@TerrisLP of course, you're waaay more Interesting.
Really is a great book!
Buying that book right now
first time viewer, once i started i could not stop lol keep it up.
There's a lot here, and much more for subscribers at StarTalkAllAccess.com! -Ben, Video Producer
Idk what's better... The info... Or when Chuck refers to one direction
This is the best performance of Chuck so far. I usually find him annoying but he was actually funny and helpful in this one :D
It's interesting this specific topic pops up in my feed after learning about Russia's attacks on Ukraine... I hope you guys can consider doing this topic again with both countries as highlights that will help educate people on what's going on and what may happen in the long term.
"Let's find a finch that's packing." DAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
What people have not addressed with the Patton slapping incident is how upset Patton would get around wounded soldiers. Patton was himself suffering from accumulated PTSD when the slapping incident occurred. Patton was also worried for the slapped soldiers, that they would be so ashamed later.
I love dr Tyson
War is the single greatest waste of human resources in the history of history yet I find it totally fascinating and can watch gun videos for hours, especially on the engineering of them as well as war tactics etc. Really weird. Also when counting war deaths you have to count both sides and the people who died non-violent deaths directly attributable to the war. In the Iraq War only roughly 10% of the civilian deaths were violent while the rest were due to issues like cessation of services like medicine, food, water etc.
Even within a small unit, at war individual soldiers can have very different experiences during the same deployment which can result in some soldiers with PTSD and others not. At least that’s been my experience.
2:15 "I'll be Mary's side car on this, I can back her up with some physics" -Neil deGrasse Tyson
Neil... who are you kidding? I haven't even watched past that quote at this point, and I'm positive Neil is going to dominate this conversation, as he does EVERY conversation he is a part of. I love Neil lol.
I love how chuck and Neil almost have the same exact conversation when they talk about giving Patreon members priority 😆
Interesting!
4:29 That's a quick switch between moods
"37:00 - basically the book im writing right now for save scifi lol
Wow didn’t know about the dumping of water on rockets pre launch
The very first computers were actually humans that calculated the Easter date for the church
the star trek episode they are talking about at around 29mins is "A Taste of Armageddon" i believe
Neil, I would ad natural disasters as a big factor in people. In 2014 the balkans were hit by intense floods, although we have had relatively recent wars, and still have everything but a healthy relationship between the countries of former Yugoslavia, everyone was helping each other, Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Muslim, Christian, notthing mattered, for weeks we have all just been HUMAN. Well of course, as the watter went away so did the unity, and that is unfortunately also due to the fact that we are all HUMAN...
It isn't some "soldiers", it's some brains. Most PTSD sufferers, myself included, did not get the disorder from military service. It's a response to stress, like a structural failure. There is no telling who is susceptible to PTSD.
i would recommend putting the patreon link in the descirption
Not 'infrasound' but sub harmonic frequency. They can vibrate internal human organs
around 35:00 @ Dr. Tyson, truth.
The civilian Medevac system was derived from military medical evacuation system.
Saw the book and I was like OMG its grunt by Mary Roach haha
In the movie " The Octagon" Chuck Norriss' brother said "the body sleeps...the MIND NEVER SLEEPS". Its Ninja training 101...
34.30 to 35.30 - 1 minute worth listening to. For me it's applicable to the "how could people let this happen" aspect of our increasingly far-right politics driven by toxic and corrupt corporate business models and of course the environmental vandalism of our species.
I like her
Do piezoelectric crystals give of energy when subjected to continuous pressure? or do they give energy ONLY when the ammount of pressure applied to them will vary?
Regarding the second question:
I was really waiting for them to argue whether having a war and coming across the medical issues at all would have furthered us if we hadn’t come across the issues for having been in the war to start
Hello StarTalk. I don't know if you take questions from RUclips for Cosmic Queries episodes, but I would have an interesting one for Mr. Neil. *IF* the humanity would build a Dyson Sphere around the Sun, what resources could we harvest thanks to it? And would be there a way to measure it's total mass?
Good question, but perhaps you meant to build the sphere around the Sun? A Dyson Sphere would capture energy from a star within it, so one around Earth might block out the sky and end all life
I think they take more questions from Twitter and Instagram.
The resource will be solar energy... E=mc2 yes we can calculate the mass
You might be the dummy if you thought he thought we could do it already. More life experience for you is needed.
You are thinking more of a Dyson swarm than a sphere. The physics exists but the will is not there. Check out Isaac Arhur channel for more about mega structures and science and futurism.
Mary is very entertaining.
Oakland in the house!
Congrats to the entire Astronomical community on the Neutron Star/GRB discovery today! Now we finally know where most of the periodic table comes from.
Makes me wonder if two white dwarfs colliding gives us maybe the middle third of elements on the periodic table.
Chuck's my layman's term translator. I vote chuck for all science translations to layman's terms like a science bible or somthing. Hahaha
Hey Neill, is there any chance that I could help make a short intro for the start talk video's? I'll be happy to help out!
PTSD has been around as long as there have been humans. With the Iraq and Afghanistan and wars, it's just become more common place to talk about. There's a movie that was made in 1946 called "The Best Years of Our Lives" and those "character types" are still just as prevalent today as in '46. "PTSD" is just the label we assign for dealing with significant psychological trauma with respect to the fact that "psych trauma" varies from person to person. If I'm in traffic and I almost slam into someone, or if someone bumps into me, that may only be traumatic for less than an hour or so but it probably wouldn't impact the way I drive, at least not long term. If I'm at a dead stop and a car loses control and slams into me at a high speed, any time I find myself at a dead stop, I may be concerned about that for the rest of my life. Maybe I'm constantly checking my mirrors, maybe I'm checking traffic reports before I start driving to make sure I won't even put myself in that situation. PTSD is simply how short and/or long term psychological manifests itself after the actual event.
mary is great
I agree. Mary is caring throughtful thought provoking people. The world needs more just like her.
About the medical advances brought about by war. There are two examples that spring up in my mind right now. Both are from the first world war, which I think most of us can agree is the absolute worst war in the history of the human race rivaled only by the east front of it's sequel. The first thing I want to point out is that plastic surgery was invented as a direct result of the war. There were so many young men coming from the front that were absolutely mangled, that there was a need to invent a whole new field of medicine in order to help them fit back into society. Plastic surgery improved a lot during and after the great war, but it was still in its infancy, and many of the people that were treated committed suicide because they just didn't fit into society. There are pictures of some of the worst cases, but look them up at your own discresion, it's harrowing stuff.
Another discovery was made (I believe on the Somme) when a wounded soldier was discovered on the battlefield, days after he had been wounded. His stomach was open and his guts had spilled, but he was still alive and his wounds were essentially completely clean and sanitary. The thing is that maggots eat only dead flesh, they don't touch alive flesh, and maggots had cleaned the man's wound and kept it from infecting. The man was brought behind lines, and his wounds were dressed. He survived. Thus the medicinal value of maggots was discovered and they are still used in treatment today.
She would make a great metal vocalist: 14:35
I agree with those that say don't waste so much time trying to pronounce names and get on with answering the questions.
Birdpeople is surely the ethnology of Birdperson.. :D
14:45 very awkward.
Who else figuratively dies when she said “and the Canadian Geese”
The mother of invention is not a necessity but desire
The difference in the PTSD question is what issues the soldier had to deal with before his time in the service.
2017 was fun...
...stuffs not as fun currently...
... we'll get back there.
First question at 7:58
"They haven't read your book. Every other talk show host is lying to you." Ohhhh, that was cold. :p
"Have a bird fire a gun" I've been triggered!
I'd say another couple of things that came from war that have benefited humanity are operational jet engines (Frank Whittle WW2) and the internet commissioned by the US DoD.
yep
Patton's response to, then called shell shock, is the same as people today who don't suffer from migraines and think those who do, are just weak or making it up.
A reasource based economy can unity humanity as defectively as war.
They at a major engine manufacturer they launched the chicken fully frozen at first and wondered why the test failed
HUMAN LLAMAS? Are we not going to touch that!?!
M. Taylor lol I was like wait wut
I know the answer!! It's just who's prefrontal is more or less active
Prefrontal cortex ***
in the lost world "book" they did use a device that uses sound to stop the dinos from attacking ...just saying
The lightning round should be called the speed of light round.
(One of t?) (T)he soldier(s) that Patton slapped had been in combat for over 60 days and had pneumonia and a fever of 104 F (40c), but he hadn't yet been shot and so had no wounds. The doctors and nurses were livid at Patton's actions and that is how the story made it into the press. Given the multiple witnesses and multiple reports, it is possible that their were multiple soldiers that Patton struck.
check out On Killing by dave grossman
Keeping people out of combat because they may experience PTSD is not a good idea when it comes to maintaining the best military force. Many many amazing soldiers such as Audie Murphy had PTSD.
My Dad dad called it shell shock, but now the have PTSD = Post Traumatic Shell Disorder
