- SABC chickened out and refused to air the new Nando's Diversity ad claiming that the message in Nandos's diversity campaign violated the Electronics Communications and Transactions Act and Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) code.
Mark Radomsky, a Nando's director and legal counsel, accused the broadcaster of censoring the company's right to freedom of expression.
He said the campaign sought to address the issue of xenophobia by calling on all South Africans to embrace diversity and shun prejudices.
He said the SABC had a problem with the opening line.
''The opening line cannot be read in isolation ... the advert needs to be viewed as a whole when determining whether a particular ad contravenes any provision of the code."
He said the broadcaster had proclaimed itself as a censorship board.
''We are a democratic state, and the rights granted to us in our constitution are not simply words, but rights worthy of fighting for."
SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said yesterday that the ad had been withdrawn because of its "xenophobic undertones".
He said: "We felt that it might stir unnecessary tensions. As a public broadcaster, we felt we had to put the interests of the public before that of commercial interests."
He said that the SABC would not flight any ad that contained bad language or incited violence, racism and xenophobia.

I like the way this got banned for xenophobia, but this brought more awareness than any of those Equality campaigns. This just strengthens the point that we all are the same
No we aren’t. The narrative that we all come from somewhere was built to suit those who took and occupied the land forcefully.
We all know where the Khoi-San people were situated even then, and that is not the whole of South Africa. Who was in all other parts? No one? Was South Africa then just one big province?

Finally someone who also understands this! Loved this advert. The idea that South Africa doesn't belong to certain South Africans is so stupid, since the Khoisan is really the only real natives. Everybody else comes from somewhere else.
Exactly mama, apparently Ramaphosa hasn't watched this ad, because last night he spoke about the redistribution of land again and said it's going to be returned to the "indigenous" people. Why must black peeps keep lying like this? Do they not realize the truth is known and no amount of repeating a lie is ever going to make it true?
And even if it was true, is he planning to do it democratically, or is he going to give the Venda first dibs on everything?
And what he said to those Khoisan leaders before Christmas was nothing more than lip-service. After he shook their hands and said "Now you can fly home and have a good Christmas" he must have thought "Yes! Finally they're out of my hair so I can stop pretending to care about their plight." Also, our wrongs are well known by now, the leftist media has made sure of that and we have apologized and atoned for Apartheid crimes through the Truth and Reconciliation commission, our collective consciences are now clear, but what about our choc-nut brothers and sisters, unless I'm very much mistaken they've never apologized to the Khoisan for almost exterminating them and it's definitely not going to happen now, because they can't keep playing the "victim" card if they admit to far worse. Khoisan are Africans just like all other Africans, South Africa does not belong to all who live in it but to Africans just like Russia belongs to Russians and Europe to Europeans.
Vovo Bani One Earth though. Same sources of water, same sources of air. The planet does not belong to anyone it is for all of us to share.

The point of the advert was that it's okay for everyone to be in this country. That every person belongs to this world.

The Dutch imported artisans such as bricklayers, carpenters, etc FROM MALAYSIA & INDONESIA. These were the MUSLIMS or CAPE MALAY people. The KHOI and CAPE MALAY also intermarried and interbred. A SMALL % of whites also married coloureds, but it was very rare. A large amount of the passing sailors frequented coloured prostitutes. Today the Cape Coloured features vary - some have Khoi features and some Arabic or Malaysian. The Muslim & Christian coloureds have distinct & different cultures.
The "very rare" part of your opinion denotes ignorance of the Christian faction of those of Mixed-race descent. So- called "whites" and those of mixed-race descent later classified as "coloureds" of the English faction and heritage were on the same level preceding the horrendous man-made classifications of Apartheid. Those who were of Afrikaans identity such as the Cape Malay and descendants of the "Griqqas/Khoi" are similar in the sense that you had something in common = both groups were former slaves and thus are the only ones who up until adore your Coloured identity. Thank you for the only merit of truth which is acknowledging that there distinctions between the Christian and Malay factions of the so-called "Coloured" identity or classification, because their history, heritage, how they came to be, world-view, socio-economic status, character and mentality were NEVER the same and shall NEVER be.

Would love to hear the Khoi and San language in the South African national anthem. Would also be nice if the N|UU language can be taken as a language subject at school. I do not understand why the Bible and the Quran is not translated into the Khoi and San languages and why religions in South Africa did not make an effort to help protect the indigenous people's language. But this add is funny. Really love the sense of humour. Maybe instead of colored people they should be called "the united nations" lol. Apparently Cape Town in South Africa is one of the most mixed racially bloodline areas in the world.

Most coloureds have a lot of khoisan blood. The dutch did not have many babies with the bantus because when they encountered the bantus, things were a little more dire and the bantus fought back a lot unlike the khoisan. So coloureds are seen as the descendants of the khoisan usually

The San was here before the Khoi. The San and Khoi were two entirely different people who eventually merged. The San has been in South Africa much longer. The San is amongst the oldest cultures on earth and descended from the first inhabitants of Botswana and South Africa. So the only people who lived in South Africa before the San were their own ancestors.

I agree with the decision to remove this advert. Yes, it is ironic and clever, but the format of TV is one in which people can tune-in or out halfway through the advert, and it's a medium that is accessible by everyone regardless of level of education or sobriety. It can do so much damage for two reasons, people who agree with the ironic statements or people who are offended by them. Imagine you are actually a foreigner who barely speaks English and you tune-in in the middle of the advert, you will think that the country is openly xenophobic
