Minecraft's relationship with the community is incredibly selective and unfortunately, the untouched potential that we see in the game is brushed away due to our insignificance as a community when compared to the rest of the playerbase. This is despite the fact that we are the most active playerbase out there. Mojang's marketing and attitudes have not recognised our community's significance and Mojang is ensuring the public and press (as seen in this video) see only what they want them to see.
The community I'm referring to is the multiplayer community, more specifically the competitive community. It is nothing like what most people would imagine and the competitive potential of the Java game is staggering. 1.9 was a massive disaster and after so many difficult years, Mojang reluctantly agreed to another combat update. However, they are making the same mistake of not really listening, by refusing to address the key issues with 1.9 in the first place. They simply brushed us aside with the off-hand statement (I quote) that we should simply stick to 1.8 if we want its PvP. The sheer ignorance in that is extraordinary. We have stayed on 1.8 for **five years** and it's becoming increasingly outdated. That's a massive part of the issue! Why should we be forced to use an outdated version of the game to simply enjoy features that have been snatched in favour of mechanics that favour low-skilled and uncompetitive combat? Why not simply allow servers to *choose* between Mojang's unpopular 'new' combat and the old combat? This sounds like a very minor thing but it's led to a massive divide and a huge loss of potential for the game. We've been asking for Mojang to listen to us for years, but they are adamant on taking the game into a closed and controlled environment, against the will of the community and features that elevated it to this popularity in the first place. This is one of the big reasons Hypixel (by far, Minecraft's largest third-party content provider), a semi-competitive server, began working on their own standalone game, Hytale, which will significantly dent Mojang unless they take the *right* action, and fast.
