    This is pretty much the best LEGO set review I've even seen, period. I agree wholeheartedly will nearly every one of your points--and I was blown away when you pointed out that this is a Speed Champions-wide scale train! However, I will point out that despite all of this set's shortcomings, the color of the train is actually correct. The books describe it as "crimson" (which is a bright red, rather than a dark red, which would be called "maroon"), and the movies and theme park have the train in bright red (the shadows and lighting simply make it appear darker).

    Here is something that people often don't realise about the scaling of this model, yes it is definitely much larger than your usual Lego, but not only is the necessary added detail beautiful, the brand new scale is exactly identical to G scale, a real model railway scale often used for garden railways.

    I think Lego is in an interesting transition period. Their "Adults Welcome" branding they've introduced seems to be Lego creating a new market of Lego Set: Large Centerpiece Display Sets. Stuff like the Hogwarts Express and the Black Panther Bust aren't traditional Adult-focused Lego products. They don't fit the mold of Large Lego Trains for a Lego City or Modular Buildings for Lego Cities. They are designed for fans of the property first and foremost. A Lego fan wouldn't care as much about a large scale Black Panther bust with no minifig, or a large scale Hogwarts Express/Platform 9 3/4 that can't fit on a regular Lego rail, but people who love and collect Black Panther or Harry Potter merch would absolutely make this a centerpiece of their display, kind of like a Hot Toys figure or statue. Lego still does cater to Adult Lego Fans with things like the Marvel Modulars, the 90th Anniversary Space/Castle set, etc, but they are starting to branch out to capture the attention of non-Lego fans to make them more Lego fans. I've noticed it a lot in the way sets like this are covered, not considering them as separate display sets rather than how they could be incorporated into a pre-existing display.
    Also, a note on the trademark issue with this set, I'm gonna take a guess that that issue isn't on Lego, but on the recent WB/Discovery merger. Something where WBD has given a mandate to reinforce trademarks on their merchandise, while the old guard didn't care as much. Given that this is probably the first set to be approved under that new regime, I'm guessing WB properties with sets are gonna have this trademark stuff as a problem going forward

    • @piotr78
      @piotr78 Год назад

      Mhhh i don't know, a resin statue will look much better (in terms of accuracy) then any Lego set. You'd have to be a bit of a Lego fan as well as a fan of the franchise they're targeting to buy these sets.

    • @Robin0928
      @Robin0928 Год назад

      @@piotr78 I dunno, I still see a lot of potential for these sets to do well as big centerpieces for someone who isn't an AFOL but wants a big statue of a character or a detailed model of a vehicle. If you're looking for "Black Panther Bust" you're probably gonna find the Lego set alongside a sideshow bust, and in that category, Lego is downright affordable at 350. (A 1:1 scale Spider-Man bust from Sideshow currently runs for $900)
      I dunno, I can kind of see the market these sets are going for, a big ticket one off purchase, even for someone who isn't already a Lego collector

    Concerning the colour the locomotive it is actually more accurate with what it was made with, however the carriage would have been more accurate to be given the dark red colour.
    That said I do think the overall appearance of the set would have been "off" if it was done like this therefore keeping the whole thing one shade of red

    What a waste of a big ticket Lego release opportunity.

  • @arghjayem
    @arghjayem Год назад +3

    I kind of agree with you about the scale. Clearly this isn’t intended for city/train builders, it’s designed to appeal as a one off purchase for HP fans more than anything else, much in the same way as the new 8 wide more detailed speed champions cars are trying to appeal as much as one off purchases for those who don’t regularly buy LEGO than LEGO fans and AFOLs.
    And I think this is also reflected in the minifigure choice. Yes there are lots of minifigures in one set but as you say they represent 4 distinct films/books from the series. Most people aren’t gonna display all 20 simultaneously I imagine but the ones from their favourite of the four films, again playing into the idea of it being a one off purchase for fans of the franchise more than fans of LEGO- I mean whilst it is a complex LEGO build and not easy for a Lego newbie, it’s far easier building a,ego set than building a model kit of the Hogwarts express which would genuinely require practical skill to create.
    09:33 having misprints AND missing pieces on a set this expensive is ridiculous!

    I know I would particularly like to see $80 lego 8 stud wide “heritage steam” line. I would particularly like it if Lego made my designs for the Southern railway Ms class mikado and Ks-1 consolidation. The Ks-1 would use pre existing 52 scale inch drive wheels and the Ms would use a new XL spoked drive wheel. I have already built practical models of both.

    Late to the party, but something worth noting, this is 1/32 scale, otherwise known in the model train community as "Gauge 1" Anyone who's seen the old Thomas series, that's the size of models they used when filming. As someone who is into model trains and lego, but not actually the lego trains series this set as it exists does not scratch that itch. For what it wants to offer, especially at the price, it's not appealing. Detail is lacking in the cab (which the previous 80 dollar set managed to include a firebox, gauges and pipes) and to my understanding the front bogie doesn't actually turn making it so the engine can't actually be used on anything other than a straight piece for display. Again, this set is in an actual scale so you can buy tracks for it so the idea of it not being functional at this price is befuddling. I'll say this is going to exclusively appeal to the Harry Potter community expressly because it lacks detail, has the wrong color and the main focus of this thing is the minifigures and display of said minifigures. Removal of the display coach, the platform section, and putting a greater focus on making the locomotive have the details it lacks and reducing the price because we put the focus on the locomotive would have made this something actually worth my while. Until then, for those interested, in OO gauge, you can purchase a powered hogwarts express that has lights, sounds, for approximately half the price of this.

    Tommy, This was a rather enlightening video. However, I do think there's a middle ground LEGO could've gone with, something that the Train AFOL community have been doing for years: Making the train 8-wide. An 8-wide train comes out to roughly 1:48th scale, and allows for both detail and playability. To be quite frank, making this merely a display piece, in my opinion, was the wrong move, as LEGO has proven with the UCS Crocodile Locomotive that they can make a train that works as both a display piece, and a play piece. Of course, that's just my opinion. Either way, Thank you for this in-depth review, and I'm looking forward to what you have in store for later.

    • @jamesgroccia644
      @jamesgroccia644 Год назад

      8-wide also works with compatibility, as you don't have to worry about any complex techniques to fit a 6-wide chassis, you can have a 1-stud overhang on either side. Sure it won't gel properly with the stations Lego puts out, but it's a happy medium between detail and playability.

    • @TweetsieRailroader
      @TweetsieRailroader Год назад

      @@jamesgroccia644 Reply's 2 weeks late here, but some of LEGO's More recent trains (The 71044 Disney Train & Station in particular) was built to 8-wide, but was definitely somewhat stubby and compared to the prototype. Either way, the precedent is still there.

Then lego would have to add them thus increasing the price. 2. There isn't any need for conductors as this is a magic train. In fact conductors don't (that I recall) even exist in the books, and shouldn't be in the set at all.

No, if adult Ron and Hermione were included I don’t think there kids would need to be as I think they are even more perfect for a Hp cmf 2. Even tho the train may be magic there are still staff for the train (at least seen in the films) + lupin says to the 3 he needs to have a word with the driver after dementor attack. 3, I understand why lupin was included i said at the end I would of got rid of the episode 6 figs instead as they were all repeats or rumoured figs, 4 the trademarks haven’t been a problem on stickers for years I’m making the point why now :) thanks for the comments :)

    I'm totally fine with lego creating high quality big sets, but one thing I keep saying over and over again is LEGO desperately needs a payment plan. I can understand that they might not wnat to decrease the price, but these sets that have a high appeal to anyone need to be just as accessible. If you could dinaly break down payments, I imagine more people like children could finaly get these big sets.

      This is a terrible idea, it’s just saying people should go into debt for Lego. As much as it might sound nice, it’s just asking for issues. PayPal might let you split payments, but even then… buy now, pay later/break up payment things are a real bad hole for many to fall down. Especially ESPECIALLY children

      But that’s not who most of these larger sets are for. Ucs sets, The over 200$ Marvel sets, the Modular’s, Ideas, and other more expensive sets aren’t targeted at kids. Now some of them definitely feel like sets that are perfect for kids, Modular’s, Ninjago City, Mos Eisly, and other 18+ sets that seem a lot like not 18+ (Like the Galaxy Explorer)

      @@bruced09 That’s their decision. If their parents want to let the kids risk it, then that it absolutely their choice. And regardless, many many places have online options like this, even just for $20 t shirts lol. It’s not like this is some newfangled idea that’s never been tested

      @@Jay-Zech yeah, a lot of places have these things because it’s putting you in debt. They want you to fall behind, or even just take to the end so they can make more money from the interest. Just because it’s not new doesn’t mean it’s good…

    Cool I always wanted to do stuff like this whenever I was a kid with Legos but my family couldn't really afford them so I had to get very creative with the parts that I did have I never was able to fully build any of my ideas though it's awesome to see people do stuff like this it's really nice you think that you could do Big boy 4014 it was restored not too long ago it was the train that me and my grandpa were supposed to ride on but unfortunately he passed before we could do so
