They could have saved the consumer money and saved a thousand pieces by not including the platform. Or used those pieces to have another train car. The fact it isn’t usable with City scale train tracks is another huge missed opportunity.
They could've made it more appealing to so many more people by making it normal scale, allowing it to be motorised, making it longer. Instead they decided just to aim for the rich collector audience and forgot about everyone else
Even lowering the platform just a little, as well as lowering that massive, bulky train track, would've really helped ! Then like you said they could've added another car, Ron+Hermione figs, or the brick wall you need to traverse to reach the platform.
Man, Harry Potter D2C sets are incredibly chaotic. You've got microscale Hogwarts Castle, prop replicas, Modular-Style-ish Diagon Alley, and a very large train. Can't imagine trying to manage a large display of Lego Harry Potter.
And now we're getting a massive Gringotts that might be too big to fit in with Diagon Alley. The only one I went for is the Hogwarts Castle and I'm glad
As a Lego Train builder, I'm ultimately happy this set exists. I had expectations for it when it was first announced and naturally was upset when it was a display set than a train set. So much could have been done with this but the internet has said my piece for me XD Lovely review, and for the coal car name: Tender. Locomotives that have a coal carrier wagon is called a 'tender', Just so the info is there ;)
Definitely one to wait for a deep discount on Amazon for though. This is way too expensive for the amount of stickers and lack of interior detail on the engine cab etc. The station also should have been at least twice as long. I am sure some will buy more than one or just mod the station to a more correct proportion anyway.
If a person wanted to they could always wall off the water tank from the coal hopper on the tender and open up the coal hopper and just dump one by one plates in there and pile them up simulate real coal.
I remember the term Tender thanks to one episode of Thomas the Tank Engine where Henry was jealous of one train for having two tenders and ended up with many rusty tenders at the end of the episode.
Really makes the Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle look like mad bargains. LEGO will continue to raise prices to see how much people are willing to pay for this stuff and if people keep buying they won't stop. Just look at the recent 40 percent discount of the Camp Nou stadium.
As a big train geek, this is pretty alright, I feel like it's just a bit too big for minifig scale, just ever so slightly to big, but otherwise it's not really bad, but not in any way worth the price
Wow, I didn't realise how dissapointing this set is until I literally picked up the system scale locomotive part of the train and watched you go through the different parts of this "UCS" one and comparing them. Outside of being bigger there is very little thats better about this one, from the lack of the drum lacquered golden pieces, to the front which the system scale did with that great print and here its a crappy sticker with weird assembly and even the cab for the driver of it is miles ahead in detail with the smaller one... I dont get this set at all and my wallet is happy about that.
So many stickers is simply unacceptable in such a premium expensive set. There's not a single sticker in the new $400 Lion Knights Castle 90th Anniversary set; only printed pieces.
For me, it all comes down to color. If they made this is DARK RED it would truly be a "collector's set" and definite must purchase, instead it is kind of just of a bigger version of the 2018 set. I know, i know, it's "expensive" for LEGO to make pieces in new colors, but really?? For train fans, the Emerald Night, one of the most beloved train sets ever released was made in dark green, which to this day makes it so iconic in its look and not just simply another rehashed train. The set sells for almost 10x what it costs new since many of those dark green pieces never appeared in other sets (and the tan windows..). Probably just going to wait another 5 years for LEGO to reissue this set, hopefully with the proper color next time. Imagine how truly unique and special this set would be if it was in the proper color!!??
I would love a set with like detailed versions of the ford anglia, knight bus and maybe hagrid's flying bike or something. Would be a nice companion set for this.
The coal car behind the engine is called the Tender :). It is disappointing there is no detail inside the cab. It looks strange without a firebox or detailed controls which are generally brass and could have been done so well with Lego. I am sure people will mod it before too long though. This engine is a Hall class Locomotive with a 4.6.0 configuration as it is has 4 leading wheels on two axles in a leading bogie at the front then 6 large powered and coupled driving wheels but no trailing wheels on the engine. I had a mate i went to school with that worked at a railway museum on weekends :). At least Lego did get the configuration correct for the wheels. The only main issue with accuracy which is not Lego's fault though is this engine class only ran until 1943 in reality so it was not used at the time the movies are set in.
It's a beautiful set. Just was hoping for something more like the Disney train set. Bigger than the normal trains but works on the same track and powered. Not being compatible with the Lego Train System Tracks is a problem. Why no Old Hermione and Ron? I would have made it like the Disney train set. With a Train car for each year you want to represent. Station? what they did is fine.
My favourite part of this set is the carriage. I love how functional it is (i.e. the doors that allow characters to access the train, and the corridor that allows characters to travel to the compartments). It's that aspect that puts other Lego trainsets to shame, and I hope it's an approach Lego will now use going forward with future train sets.
Oh, I'm sooo getting this set. Seeing it from multiple angles kind of opens up a few more possibilities to fix it for me. Also, at 18:46 It's called a tender
This is £430 in the UK and I can't even justify that amount I don't think I'll be getting this considering I have the last icons set and also bought the daily bugle earlier in the year amongst other small sets 🤔😆
Thank you so much for the great review! I let all the ads roll, hoping that will help you recoup some of the cost! Also, as someone who’s been tuning into videos about the PC games, I found your soundtrack choice so incredibly pleasing. This is absolutely beautiful, but it’s way too big. Like the Titanic set, I just can’t imagine where one would find the space to display this. If anything, I might (though probably won’t) part out the station itself, however underwhelming most find it; it looks like the closest we’ll ever get to a representation of the Cursed Child stage, and I’m in love with it.
I feel that this is too overpriced or just doesn’t have the uniqueness for its price, there are so many other awesome and fun sets that you could get at a much lower price
I think the passenger cart is well proportioned, where 2 minifigs can sit side-by-side and there's still room to pass by. I'll definitely get this, but I will wait for some discount. I don't think it's overpriced, but they could have done with fewer pieces on the tracks. And I agree that the light bricks don't add much, except maybe in the evenings. But then you have to somehow keep them pressed on. I wonder how much effort and pieces it will cost to expand the platform to fit another arch (or two). Thanks for the review. Well done. As for next year? There can be only Gringotts!!! A great set to finish on. (Hopefully we also get a third CMF series.)
I think that something Lego should do is to start maybe selling some sets in multiple parts… this for example sell the train and the platform separately.. that ways people can buy just the train or just the platform or both… or you can buy multiple platforms for a little cheaper. Maybe it’s just me but I think it would be a cool thing for them to do for SOME sets
Do you mean like they have done with the last two minifigure scale Hogwarts Castles? One set for the Hospital wing, another for Dumbledore's office etc Although in this case the platform is rather pointless without the train..
3:18 Correction: All licenced minifigures *except Voldemort and Red Skull* don't have a nose, which is ironic, considering they're the only characters who don't have a nose in their movies.
The platform needs to be at least twice as wrong it looks silly lol . Plus they should have done a build where at least the cart was disappearing through the wall. That would have looked amazing.
would have much rather had the scene from Half-Blood Prince where Slughorn invites students to his compartment for food than the scene we got with Draco. Could have got an updated Slughorn, Zabini (who would provide the diversity), McClaggen and a Ginny with Arnold, removing Draco, Luna and the two extras from the epilogue with the same number of figs but no us book fans contiinue to get shafted.
When they took the trouble to include armrests that come up and down for the seats, they should really have included a Lavender Brown-minifigure in this set.. That scene is perhaps the most famous example of those armrests coming into play in the whole series.
First time seeing the train when it isn't on the tracks and man... it looks great without the tracks! Could've had so much more potential or just significantly lowered the cost without including the giant track base.
Was rather surprised she couldn't find out what it is called. Every large Steam Locomotive had one, and so that "The Flying Scotsman" could set records for getting to Edinburgh from London it's tender had a corridor through it so that the Driver and Engineer could be changed without stopping. In fact the Hogwarts Express Prof Lupin (Prisoner Of Azkaban) after the Dementor attack says "I'm going to speak to the Driver", which without the corridor through the Tender would have been impossible on a moving train.
I will be buying this. And even though I'm a full adult and can do whatever I want with my money, I'll probably wait until after Christmas with $$ and gift cards to soften the blow. (Edit for grammar)
I just wish it had been compatible with standard LEGO track and had at least one more car. If it was 8 studs wide I think they could have easily pulled that off at the same price point.
i was very excited for this set when it was rumoured. however, the more i see it, the more im holding back. it's a very big set but i dont see myself enjoying this as much as say, Diagon Alley? the "king cross" station looks like an after thought to me 🙊
Enjoyed your review. Gonna be a tough sell for the majority of us. It has too much yet too little at the same time. The train engine is definitely the highlight of the set. Thanks Holly!
I think the biggest gripe most people would have is having two stickers on two side-by-side plates. I don't know if they do it but they could've had a 4x6 plate and just had one sticker instead of two 3x4 side-by-side and then attempt to align the two stickers so the number plate doesn't look bad.
Nice review...I hope to pick up this set. Holly - @31:48 there ARE two complete arches on the platform...one of them just happens to be split in two on either end. NO increase in price to have two complete arches. Yeah and too, too bad with the misprint "King Cross" on the display placard. I've been through Kings Cross soooooo many times during my time in England 1985-1988 and as recently as 2019 when I was able to visit the Harry Potter store at Kings Cross.
By not using the standard track size you are stuck with it sitting there. It has to be converted to get the motor in it, not sure they thought it through entirely.
Yet they still cannot give us mid-legs instead of the stationary kiddo legs. Kiddo legs need to be retired and mid-legs become the standard. I'm tired of seeing sets where kids have to stand up on rides, in cars, etc.
It s a tender and it holds coal and water. The tender is part of the locomotive so the locomotive is the locomotive with the tender attached, not separated from it. It is not ey cart :)))))
This set is awesome in many ways, with a lot of amazing details. It is quite expensive though. You should make custom epilogue Ron and Hermione minifigures. A creator expert Ford Anglia and a Gringotts would be awesome
@@HollyOnFilm your collection is really cool wish I could shop however right now I'm broke and seeking help wherever available oh Publishers Clearing House is a scam that sells lies so protect yourself from all bad organizations online .
This is a great review Holly! One of the worst things about this set honestly is that it seems like a pain to display on a regular shelf. I'd like to be able to see both the platform and the train itself, which isn't entirely possible from one viewpoint. I guess I'll have to get creative when I do buy it😅
I was debating about wether I wanted this version or if I’d just get the older one. But after seeing this detailed review, I definitely want this set, so thank you for helping me choose 😊. I was glad to find an aussie Lego reviewer on RUclips
Great review, thanks. You changed my opinion of this model. It's actually guide decent. The platform needs to be longer though. The spaces underneath it look quite correct for some UK railway platforms. The spelling mistake is, however, unforgivable. It's not their first either.
This is an amazing video but im really glad that they didnt cut or change any of the things that you wanted 😅 The only one i can agree with is the epilogue characters over the random students, but i do understand why that was done and im pretty happy to have some diverse characters as i dont atm. Everything else i really love, even down to the unfinished platform. It might be because its my kind of art style but i like the aesthetic of it. Lastly, as someone who cant afford things like this very often, the light bricks are exciting and i think make it feel luxurious as they arent something thats found in the cheaper playsets. But i suppose maybe they couldve been an optional add on with even more cool lighting like the lego titanic has
If it had been a complete train with more passenger cars, I’d consider it. Especially considering how amazing the one passenger car it does come with is. I can’t justify spending $500 on only a part of a full train.
I just got it, waiting for it to be delivered. I did not pay that much for it, using the VIP discount and my VIP points, I was able to buy it for 200. I feel like it was a bargain, I do not know if I will build it or just collect it, time will tell. I have wanted it since it came out, but feel its past the average person, and collectors alike , it cost too much and is just too big.
I could buy the O gauge Lionel Hogwarts train set and additional coaches. For less price with track and power pack with movie sayings. Since Lego is the same model scale. To me that makes sense.
I think what Lego should've done is scrap the station and instead done something similar they did with the T-rex rampage set, placing Harry, Ginny and their kids on a base plate with the placard of the train behind them while for the train, added a second and third coach to make the set complete and for the final part, used a tectonic motor to make the wheels turn instead of using a handle. Update: if Lego didn't add a second or third coach, but left the set as is, as mentioned how the stand is built in two parts, if lego releases addition coaches as separate products, with its own stand that can be attached to the set, that would be a plus for me. I feel like 5 coaches total would be ideal for this set; one that comes with this set and 4 exclusive carriages.
As a train fan, first and foremost and a Harry Potter fan I have been looking forward for this set to come out. Unfortunately to me this looks like it is not compatible to the LEGO train tracks width. Unless I find this set at a discounted price I will giving this set a miss. I would rather put the money for this into buying parts for carriages for my Emerald Night.😀👍
Thanks for the review! Yeah...the more I see of this set the LESS I like it and the more unjustified the 500€ are. It brings less pieces than the Hogwarts Castle and Diagon Alley, it brings a worse minifigure selection (with two very dumb choices made, clearly, to fit a "diversity" quota instead of being faithful to the films) and the build itself is hardly original or awe-inspiring. And then there's the profusion of stickers which is just inadmissible at 500€. I'm honestly moving from "I'll buy it with a 20% discount" into "I'm skipping this altogether"...This might be the set that breaks my "I'll own every Harry Potter set" objective.
They could have saved the consumer money and saved a thousand pieces by not including the platform. Or used those pieces to have another train car. The fact it isn’t usable with City scale train tracks is another huge missed opportunity.

Even lowering the platform just a little, as well as lowering that massive, bulky train track, would've really helped !
Then like you said they could've added another car, Ron+Hermione figs, or the brick wall you need to traverse to reach the platform.
Looks like you can modify it easily tho to run on regular train track
@@Thine_mother at that price, you shouldn't have to

The "coal car" is called the tender, and it would contain not just coal or wood for the fire box, but also extra water for the boiler

As a big train geek, this is pretty alright, I feel like it's just a bit too big for minifig scale, just ever so slightly to big, but otherwise it's not really bad, but not in any way worth the price
it’s actually 1/32 scale the same as 1 gauge and fits on g gauge track
I could get a loop of track with an engine along with lots of rolling stock for only 200, the train is not worth the price, not even in the slightest
I’m fighting with the decision to buy it. I’m a huge train guy too, but I just don’t know….
@@HauntedHenry It's larger though . I guess you could make your own track sections and power it for a train set but it would be expensive.

The coal car behind the engine is called the Tender :). It is disappointing there is no detail inside the cab. It looks strange without a firebox or detailed controls which are generally brass and could have been done so well with Lego.

18:51 that's called the tender
Because I am Lego HP completionist and I will obviously be getting this set, this review has only made me want this set even more.
You’re gonna love my next video

your collection is really cool wish I could shop however right now I'm broke and seeking help wherever available oh Publishers Clearing House is a scam that sells lies so protect yourself from all bad organizations online .
they should’ve made it dark red, included two passenger cars and not included light bricks then sell it for $470 and get rid of the quotes.
i dont think i could ever get this, but it definitely is beautiful!
I was glad to find an aussie Lego reviewer on RUclips
the two random students are the figures of the designers. sure it is a nice little easter egg, however an old Ron and Hermine would have been great...
Definitely worth waiting. It's already on sale. I got it for $400 today.
Excellent in depth review Holly, well done
I would purcahse two of these sets and combine the extra train car to it as well as build on to the train station platform.
eeeee it's $350 on Amazon rn. I might cave!
I’m happy with my 2018 version
01:16 This is pretty much how every LEGO Star Wars fan feels about most purchases! 😂🤣😂
Attention Wizards, Witches, Muggles - She did it!! So excited for this.
Great review, thanks. You changed my opinion of this model. It's actually guide decent. The platform needs to be longer though. The spaces underneath it look quite correct for some UK railway platforms. The spelling mistake is, however, unforgivable. It's not their first either.
This is an amazing video but im really glad that they didnt cut or change any of the things that you wanted 😅
The only one i can agree with is the epilogue characters over the random students, but i do understand why that was done and im pretty happy to have some diverse characters as i dont atm.
But i suppose maybe they couldve been an optional add on with even more cool lighting like the lego titanic has
This train is so big and cool, Luna is still cute.
Very nice review, I've waited so long for such a LEGO Harry Potter set. And now it's finally released😃
Honestly can't wait for the other ppl to mod this set with reccomend builds, actual lights inside and more passengers carts
Great video cant wait to get this my self
The coal car is a tender by the way
The hairpiece for the Hufflepuff student comes from Dean Thomas’s fig from the CMF and Hogsmeade sets
The N-1 starfighter by hottoys is impressive at 6ft x 2ft but cost $2k-$3k
Should have had a secret doorway or something for the 9 3/4s platform.
Instead of those two random students, they could’ve added Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson which would fit with the HP6 scene
YES
Surprised that the middle room doesn't have a print/sticker on the window of ice. Because of the Dementor.
Or even a little frosty print on the bottle
If it had been a complete train with more passenger cars, I’d consider it. Especially considering how amazing the one passenger car it does come with is. I can’t justify spending $500 on only a part of a full train.
Well buy two sets, you'll get the extra passenger carriage you want plus you'll be able to extend the station platform.
Would you ever do a comparison video with the 2018 Hogwarts Express?
I’ve been working on filming one today!
I just ordered it, I think it will look amazing in my home.
Very good review.
18:50 the "coal car" is usually called tender :)
I’m assuming this doesn’t have much playability on actual Lego tracks?
I'm honestly moving from "I'll buy it with a 20% discount" into "I'm skipping this altogether"...This might be the set that breaks my "I'll own every Harry Potter set" objective.
same
The correct name for the coal cart is a Tender
