Wow. When you put them together like that, it really puts into perspective how HUGE the new one it. I thought the small one was decently sized, and it’s a dwarf in comparison
Buy a couple of the playset Hogwarts express’ and you can double the number of carriages, increase the size and detail of the station and increase the size of the engine and tender car all for less than the big set. Plus it will run on existing track layouts.
I would choose the 2018 playset version over the 2022 Collectors' edition set. Main reason is the ability to display it. The 2022 set is gigantic (and overpriced since about $100 of the price is going to the brick built tracks and the station is too small) and would be a pain to display as it would take a ton of space.
I feel like that's what most people wanted. A more detailed train that fit on tracks and could run but had more carriages than the playscale one. Lego decided to go on this whole oversized, overpriced thing they've been doing lately and we got this massive dust magnet
Personally, I think the new version is way too big. I don't want something that huge taking up space in my home. I realize it's gorgeous, but will skip it just the same. Thanks Holly for the comparison.
The new Overpriced Edition of the Hogwarts Express seems to be a blown-up mix of both the 2010 and 2018 version of the train. The colour palette clearly is the one from the 2010. To me, it's still not accurate. The train should be dark red and the yellow stripes should have a black tripe printed in the middle. If LEGO can print small round elements on a 1x1 tile for the 25€ James Bond car, then they could print a stripe on the yellow bricks. At 500€, it's just not admissible that LEGO was, once again, so lazy.
True enough, while it may not seem fair to compare these two sets, comparison between these are inevitable as it's the same thing in two completely different formats. We're going to compare them anyway! The playset version, yes it's nowhere near as detailed or striking as the big one, but it's still not a awful set by any means, it's still nice. And is MASSIVELY cheaper and doesn't take enormous amounts of space and shuffling stuff around to make room for it. The playset version is currently 25% less than normal in the UK at £60; if you want a Hogwarts Express model, it's a complete no-brainer! Heck you could buy say three copies if you wanted to and with some tinkering around, not only could you end up with a much larger station and a longer train, it would all still be £250 cheaper than the UCS-Styled version and feel more complete! Normally I'd prefer the bigger models but price aside, the big version just has too many flaws; they're small granted but it adds up to undermine its high price. I don't know how many pieces went into the platform itself but I could've done without it and the track base (it takes up 11% of the set's number of pieces) and shuffled the figure line-up around, to drop the retail price by around half the amount. Yes Lego sets a price of a set and the designer has to work within that set budget, but this looks so overbudgeted, resulting in unnecessary filler from the track base and short incomplete platform.
Something not mentioned (and perhaps this set's biggest flaw) is that the UCS set literally cannot use standard LEGO track. While in a display manner this may not matter, for the LEGO Train community- and hell, any LEGO fan with some power functions lying around, this is a mindboggling bad misstep for the set and ultimately alienates a large amount of people- and at $500, alienating a whole community in hopes that "detail" would win us over was a horrible idea.
I have the old one and don’t think I will get the new train as it’s too much money and I don’t have anywhere to put it. I have the tracks like you and I am considering getting another old set to add another carriage and put a motor in it. Do you know of any good instructions online? Ewan
Ideally the Hogwarts express D2C set would be a motorised train that is 8 studs wide the same as the Disney castle and containing possibly 3 cars each with references to 2 books each as you move from the front to the back or the train a scene from each movie/book is revealed. (I.e chocolate frog escape, dementor frozen bottle near window, Luna lovegood with magazine). Would have also been amazing it it had printed tiles throughout with an accurate (typo free) UCS sticker plaque. The train would be dark red and have a heap of debut dark red. Kings cross station would either be longer and smaller to showcase the true beauty of the train by not obscuring the view and have a pass through brick wall feature. Alternatively the station could be Hogsmeade such as the final scene from Philosophers stone and without the additional epilogue figures which I personally don’t care about since their screen time was like 8 mins. In summary for $600 bucks if we could get 3 passenger cars, Hogsmeade station, (no light bricks) instead motorised 8 studs wide with less random figs and actual printed pieces that are grammatically correct. This set would be an absolutely amazing set!
Hey holly, I don’t know if you noticed but one of the round 2x2 pieces that were used for the train bumper on the 2018 set were missing Edit: never mind, you found it later on
It won’t from Lego directly, but if it sells out then the only place to get it will be on the resell market where more than likely it will be a much higher price. If you want to get it for Christmas I’d suggest waiting no later than Black Friday
I have two of the playset which ive put together to make a bigger display. I will get the collectors edition train but not for awhile, just to complete the collection and i really like the minifigures
Thanks for showing the differences between these two sets. After sitting on the fence with this set now I know I definitely won't be getting the new one. It is just to big. I will just modify my 2018 set instead. I think they have should designed it on the scale of the Emerald Night.😀👍
The first thing you notice about the two sets is the great platform on the smaller one compared to the *** on the larger one. Then you realize that the sign "Hogwarts Express" on the smaller one looks perfect but the protruding sign on the larger one looks just weird. Then the minifigures - for the larger set you can only display one quarter at a time because there are four sets of the same characters.... I bought two sets of the smaller one so I could have two carriages. I'd hate to think how much that would set me back with the larger one, AND I can use the smaller one on my Lego train tracks. For me, the larger one is just a disaster. It is so sad.
I suspect a lot of hardcore Lego fans would give the new set a pass like they would the Loop Coaster set mainly because of the size. They are both highly detailed of course and in case of the Coaster, a very smart engineering, but the size would be cumbersome even for display and difficult to put into temporary storage if one needs to cycle his display space with several sets or themes. Also its incompatibility with Lego's standard train tracks just further lessens its appeal IMO. Even the relatively large Crocodile Train that comes with a reasonably compact display set fits in the tracks well plus it can be motorized quite easily.
Yeah i think they should have just done a Lego City style Train set instead personally. This is too big for most to display anyway. It just seems like a bit more research should have been done into who exactly would buy this first.
Keep in mind that we will likely never get a polar express because of the $500 set. they didn't want them both out at once and this won't sell enough to justify doing another.
Prior to watching this I had no desire whatsoever for either set. I can't say that now. Gonna have to pick up the play set or two. I think this is a great comparison. Thanks!
I have 2018 one HollyOnFilms i heard about 2022 where's Ron Wesley and where's Hermione Granger that's what i heard about because Hermione Granger and Ron Wesley is missing in the bigger one
I managed to knock my LL928 on the floor and smash it last night so i can't imagine being careful enough to own this :) . Thankfully nothing was damaged on the ship but it sure came apart a little too well lol.
I think the new one is brilliant, and at just under $0.10 US per piece, it's reasonably priced, although I can see why some might not want the track. This train is closer to a true minifig scale, allowing for 4 seat compartments and much more detail. The platform looks better, even if it lacks the hidden gateway feature. I'm looking forward to its release.
One piece of constructive criticism: I would try to be more intentional with your hand movements when doing the comparisons. It felt like there was a lot of hand flailing going on, which didn’t feel like it added anything and was a tad distracting

I wish there was a half-way point between these two. A higher detail train compared to the playscale set, but small enough to fit on Lego tracks.

Well considering it's a UCS and meant to be displayed and not played with the size is pretty decent
Holly, I do believe you are missing a 2x2 dish on the front of the playset
Me looking at my 2004 lego harry potter train on the shelf 😅

It will become better value for money when there are Amazon sales. even maybe by Xmas.

at 8:14 where was this train at

do you think the new lego 76405 hogwarts express will go up in price when christmas gets nearer?

Does the collectors edition one have twisting front wheels like the playset one?
Thank you very much Holly!! I have been wondering which I should get.
Hey great video! I think they both look awesome! I’d love to see a polar express train set from Lego!
IDK what folks say about the big train, I’m getting it for Christmas!
This is making me think that what would be best is expanding the play set one. Making things longer would help with getting more detail in and stuff.
It would’ve been awesome if they included a fourth light brick and lit up the furnace in the cab!
The playset one is one of my favorites. I'm trying to save for the collector edition one
The printed side arch on UCS is too far off scale to my eye, as is the front plate.....

The difference in size between both trains is pretty much like difference in size between standard and narrow gauge trains.

It would be more fitting to compare the Mould King "Magic Train", that is the real competition - and in many areas, it is far ahead of Lego...
I have 2018 one HollyOnFilms i heard about 2022 where's Ron Wesley and where's Hermione Granger that's what i heard about because Hermione Granger and Ron Wesley is missing in the bigger one
The 2018 set is also very easy to mod to run on the track.
Last week I bought the play set Hogwarts Express from my local Walmart for $49. I am happy
Omg what a deal
I paid the same price. I love it and am happy with it for now
75$ vs 500$ you can buy 7 of the regular one for the price of 1.
I managed to knock my LL928 on the floor and smash it last night so i can't imagine being careful enough to own this :) . Thankfully nothing was damaged on the ship but it sure came apart a little too well lol.
Do you think it’s worth the money?
2018 Express is very wee in comparison 😮
The sliding doors… there goes $500
Holly, what's your favorite Harry Potter movie? Mine is Prisoner of Azkaban.
Me too, it's so dang good
Obviously the D2C makes the 2018 Hogwarts Express look like a GWP.
If I can’t make a Full track for it, it’s pointless to me. Trains need to move.
I just want to say that Kings Cross overhead bridge is the similar one the Jews used to go into their trains of death during the 1940s
lego 76405 train size is huge🤣🤣
Hello hello Holly 😊
Wow look at the size diffrent s .never Sean it next to the. Last one. Wow ..hope you bean good. 🙂😊

A lot bigger than I thought haha
Just guessing that lego will retire the play set version as soon as possible so that minimizing the difficulty of picking up. LOL
