Prior to being placed on display at Warner Bros in Watford, 5972 was still used to haul occasional excursion trains. Just before 5972 Olton Hall was withdrawn from traffic in 2014 when both it's boiler certificate and mainline certificate's expired, the engine worked two final railtours which we're called "The Wizards Express" and ran from Manchester Victoria to York via Carnforth and Skipton. 5972 hauled both trains to York from Carnforth and then back to Carnforth (the 1st trip on the return journey being from York to Hellifield due to a late evening engineering block in Manchester).
Tickets for the trip we're £69 per person and I managed to get tickets to go on both trips.

Since it's a thing outside of the HP universe be it for Muggles or magical folks worldwide, I don't think one can trace the practice back to a single point of origin. Gandalf is only one example from another universe/franchise. Suleyman the magnificent would be one historical figure among many to have earned a descriptor that remained tied to his name long after his demise. Catherine the Great is another...

James and Lily were quite young when they died, probably in early 20s, so her parents should not be too old to die without knowing about harry and dudley. What happened to them? Every time I see this, I'm reminded how much I love the Hogwarts express, but also that I wanna make a 'book accurate' version using as period accurate equipment as possible with modifications. Still looking for a good model for the locomotive since early steam locomotives aren't easy to come by... Though still. I'm thinking an early Midland or similar locomotive that's either a 2-2-2 or such without a tender

  • @normansmith9110
    @normansmith9110 2 года назад +8

I've speculated that the Hogwarts Express begins in the Quadruple London-Peterburough track and is switch of to a short wizarding thank and onto the Lindob-York Track but just before York it is switched off again to a wizarding track into the Scottish Highlands and on to Hogwarts.
While on the Muggle track it appears as a slow moving Electric train but this is an illusion from a special Charm.. The train has to be visible to Muggles while on the Muggle track Muggle track and activate the train signals for safety reasons.
Because it is partially mechanical the magic at Hogwarts is too much for it.
    Therefore it stops in Hogsmeade.

This is most likely all cannon within Harry Potter but me who know a thing or 2 about trains and steamtrains, this feels so wrong: this train was only built in 1937. Not in the 1830... like real world 1830 steam engines were still made of wood, the best steamengine was the famous Stephenson's Rocket. So that's verry wierd and confusing but I guess with magic everything is possible

Interesting. I did not know about that other platform. Thanks for sharing!
One minor thing: it is not impossible for Muggles to enter platform 9 3/4, as you claimed. We see on some occations that Muggles do come onto the platform, but in those cases they are accompaning a magical family member there (remember, for example, the scene when Petunia calls Lily a freak for the first time, which was on that platform). I believe that the reason why most Muggles don't enter it, even though they can, is that they don't know it exists. You have to enter it intentionally, knowing what you will find there, otherwise it doesn't work.

Hogwarts Express is an express route, not a named engine. Express routes run from point A to point B with no stops in between. Thus from Kings Cross to Hogsmead Village. The engine we know from the movies is not the first and only engine to have been used on this route. The engine we know is a GWR 4900 Class engine number 5972. This is a Hall Class engine designed by Charles Collett in 1923. The first prototype was built in 1924, and went into full production in 1928. There is no way engine number 5972 could have been used prior to 1928. So from 1830 to 1928 there were other engines and coaches used on the express route known as the Hogwarts Express. In the game "Hogwarts Legacy" which takes place sometime in the 1800's I am hoping the game designers use an "era appropriate" engine and coaches for the Hogwarts Express route.

    No, I didn't know about Platform 7½.
I've wondered however, how a young witch or wizard from other parts of the island of Britain, or Ireland, for that matter would get to Hogwarts without first having to make the extra trip to London's King's Cross Station. Say the young student comes from Cardiff. Liverpool, or Leeds, King's Cross is a little out of the way, isn't it? What with Hogwarts being located somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, it would seem practical to have trunk lines delivering students to Northampton or Leicester, Edinburgh, or perhaps Glasgow where the Hogwarts Express would make stops.

However, I'm glad that Olton Hall has been preserved and can be seen by Harry Potter fans from around the world. Additionally, I think Olton Hall carries its film livery extremely well and John Williams' score for "The Philosopher's/ Sorceror's Stone) adds a real air of grace and majesty to its first onscreen appearance.

If magic can be used to make a 19th century locomotive run without the need of maintaince and fuel, and turn motor vehicles into flying contraptions, then imagine what the Wizarding World can do with space shuttles. Just imagine if Arthur Weasley stole one of Elon Musk's SpaceX shuttles and enchanted it with magic and went exploring outer space. That thing won't have to run on fuel and the passengers on board could just magic if they find themselves in trouble.

I’m still rereading the Harry Potter series and am on the half blood Prince and have yet to read mention of the orient or platform 7 1/2. That really aught to be expanded upon better, and have its own merchandise as well as the Hogwarts express.

You said that it does 3 round trips, but stated 4 times of the year that it’s used. Who works on the train? Conductor, trolley witch, who else? They can’t have all of those kids with no adult supervision.

Are there special exceptions for students that live close to Hogwarts or would pass it to get to kings cross? Because that would be a bit of a hassle, like if your family is in hogsmead couldnt you just walk to school or fly on a broomstick?
