This my friend is what you call the matrix. Most people are programmed to get their degrees not really thinking about how they will pay their student loans back or how the interest accrued will make paying the loan over 10 years a tough task. People are more concerned with having a salary job that requires a degree than having an hourly position (CDL driver HVAC, etc)with overtime. Also colleges/universities teach you about everything but financial literacy. Its sad that the only college students that will learn anything about money are finance majors.

Because you never know how the woman's pregnancy is going to be.. she could have a very difficult pregnancy where she's not going to be able to work. And may need him to help her more reducing his hours of being able to work. Also you never know the child could be born premature and that will take away from hours of being able to work. And since they're in the processes of wanting to pay down their debt. Having a baby is very expensive and will add to their debt.

While many people start families while being in debt and eventually get things cleared up, this is a bit different. Realistically its not a great situation to start a family in if one values getting out of debt sooner. There would have to be huge jumps in income to make traction this way. Both parents would be pretty stressed trying to pay down debt while starting a new family, which adds its own responsibilities and stressors. I feel like this is a situation where either your goals and values to start a family is honored, or paying off debt is what you value more for this time. Very hard to have both and be successful when they have that much debt. 50K of debt?! Sure no problem, but this is a different animal. I feel like this situation would have been better handled by the hosts by having a frank conversation of what the caller really is wanting right now...get serious about debt or have the mindset of staying in debt a lot longer to have a family earlier. It seems like pie in the sky to have both mindsets work in this situation.

Folks, I think the reason they avoid implying someone should hold off on having kids is because it may come off a certain way to viewers personally, rather than financially. There’s a difference between giving advice of dont buy that house, pay off that car, or tell your in-laws to stay out of it. Telling someone, don’t have kids yet is beyond the scope of financial advise and more personal than, cut off your freeloading relative. Trust me, I thought the same thing, but it’s actually wise how they answer, and at the end they did gently imply that it’s easier now to work more without a baby.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall seeing any videos where Dave even said, “Don’t have kids, you’re too broke! Get out of debt first!” (Although that is the wiser approach)

They said to get pregnant despite the debt, they didn’t offer much help. I’m not saying you have to be debt free to have a child. A better answer may have been find out what kind of work do they do, can they pick up part time work on weekends or evenings. Encourage to both work extra, knock out atleast the $25K in non student loan debt within a year and get started on the student loan. Once they have started that in 12-18 months then they would be a better situation to have a child. Once the wife is pregnant she won’t be able to do much extra work. So the goal should be to knock out a significant portion atleast 75K before having a child.

Let me start off by saying that I love the Dave's Podcast and I am in full support. However as a grown adult man, it is our responsibility to primarily provide and protect our family. With that being said we think differently In the sense of having kids without a plan isn't a smart logical decision for anyone. Now before you jump on me let me explain. Kids are Angels but they come with a lot of responsibility mostly being food and shelter and having children while trying to get out of a massives amounts of debt isn't smart to me. It is another thing if you already have them but adding to your strees is not the way to go. I believe we should be delaying kids until we are in a healthy financial place. Am I the only one who thinks this way?

It's always crazy to me that Ramsey personalities encourage people to have children whenever they want. Children are SO EXPENSIVE, not to mention it's incredibly selfish to have children when you aren't financially literate or well off. You're setting your kids up for failure and basically saddling them with caring for you when you're old because you didn't plan your finances well.

I don’t know why people are still shocked that the Ramsey show encourages having children. They are a Christian-based company (children are blessings belief). Having kids with debt is not the end of the world. And if many people wait until they were out of debt, they would probably miss the window for having children, especially women, depending on how many years it takes.
