I did it exactly one time and only because 1) I was incredibly miserable where I was and 2) I had a rent-free place to go (my mom and stepdad’s camp). And I knew I was employable and I was willing to go just about anywhere. I took whatever job I could find in the meantime and it worked out that I found a job here and a year later I bought my house! I do remember thinking that I should be super stressed as it was the first time I’d been unemployed since I was 15, but I was just so relieved to have gotten out of where I was (a toxic work environment in a city I didn’t like) that it was overriding the stress lol. “He works in a lab”
I know Ph.D students being paid 36k as a STIPEND. There’s zero way he’s making that as a researcher. He’s probably doing minimum wage contract work that requires a hs diploma.
Even at the bottom of the rung researchers make 40-50k, but in exchange they get intellectual freedom. This guy doesn’t sound like that.

First to address the food industry thing, that’s just incorrect. I have friends who were in my chemical engineering program who went into research on food processing and are making 150k right now.
Secondly, generally researchers are pretty good with money because they’ve been rationing it out their whole life- doing something they love instead of getting paid well. That’s a position I am going into. It doesn’t stop me from investing into my Roth and being safe with money.

I think his advice was foolish. He just told the one with a job and 60k in debt (not combining households, remember) to moved to Arizona and line up a job. With what money? How bout telling the girl with NO JOB to go to Arizona with her savings and line up an apartment and a decent job, and have the boyfriend follow when he has found a potential job in Arizona. If he isn't the right man, she will quickly discover it, and she can start living like an adult.
