This is why James Hetfield loves Explorer guitars…

- Yes that fullness in the sound and very fast attack makes them one of the most aggressive sounding guitars.
I was jamming with a Rectifier model from the Axe Fx 3 without any boosts and the IR of a vintage Recto cab mic’ed up with an sm57 (no high pass filter applied). This tone in particular reminds me Hetfield’s sound in the mid 2000’s.
Thanks for watching !

Guys after seeing some of the comments I went back to check and realized that I played “battery” main riff wrong. I just felt like shooting a quick video of me enjoying this special guitar and didn’t even think much what I was playing. I promise I’ll get it right for the next one 🤘🤘
Who cares? Thats a badass guitar!
Fuck that just shred
Your playing is pretty tight man, so I’m sure that’d be an easy adjustment for ya! Nice guitar sound!
you actually had me thinking if I'm playing it wrong lol.
Pretty damn minor mistake lol take it easy on yourself. Anyone who would comment on that caliber of mistake is just a fuckin nerd lol
Sounds like the effect that was used in the Guitar Center interview with James Hetfield
I recreated the same rig he used in that interview that’s why it got pretty close :)
"I was afraid of... pretty much everything. [...] ...music is the way to speak, *YOU KNOW* ." 💪🏻
@@Cthulhu_Awaken "really really shy kid.."
He sounded really good there. I don't know much about guitars but i wish he would sound like that live
@@gallettiguitartones how did you find the rig?
The explorer is an awesome guitar, but the "fullness and fast attack" are more to do with the pickups, which could be swapped into any guitar, than with the guitar itself. The majority of the sound you get from any guitar has to do with the filters in your signal chain (pickups, pedals, amp EQ, speakers, and mic).
I was thinking the same thing. You can lower the strings, rise the pickups, stuff like that....at most I think you might have a different shape or finish of the neck, different balance due to body shape or weight, but other than that, the fast attack and fullness of sound, I don't think it has anything to do with the explorer itself.
the arrangement of the guitar plays a big part too. I have the exact same set of EMG pickups in a Les Paul and in an HH configuration Telecaster. The Les sounds a lot beefier with high gain, more clarity in the low end, whereas the tele is really bright and crisp, and even still has a little bit of that iconic telecaster twang on the cleans.
Id say about 5% of your sound comes from the guitar itself, then maybe 10% from the pickups. Everything else is amp and pedals pretty much
@@plack_benis382 alot come from the hands themselves
@@dudehuh5491 yeah, and the feet for the freaks out there lol
I used to have an ESP Explorer just like that back in 2000. I sold it for other gear at the time cause I was young and stupid. I regret selling it as I’ll never be able to get another one with their ridiculous prices. If I could have the one I had back I’d keep it for life. No matter how much I was offered for it.
Damn , I would’ve castrated myself if I had done that. I’ve always wanted an JH 90s white esp explorer and I’m a drummer 😂
True. If anything the natural sound of the Explorer is fat with a slow attack due to the lack of a maple cap. If you want to hear the guitar's natural sound you need to use low output PAF style pickups into a reasonably clean tube amp. There's a reason why Matias Jabs has a maple cap on his signature Explorers. He wants more of that Les Paul sound. All mahogany guitars lack attack IMO. The EMG pickups, heavy strings, heavy handedness, heavy picks and the amp give you the attack. My Gibson Explorer with a 500t bridge pickup doesn't have the attack that this ESP with EMGs has.
I’m sure it went to a good home bro 🤘🏼
@@jceruiz7144 lol selling that guitar is worse because if you castrate yourself you can always just put your junk in a cooler on ice, run to the E.R., and hope for the best. Not so when hawking an ESP. There's zero chance you're getting it back.
You can get an explorer Jackson for under 300 bucks though and they are pretty good
as a strat guy i never thought i'd love this shape so much, it's quite confy and the wrist sits just in the right place for those fast galops and palm mute, love the explorer!
Xiphos/warrior style is more comfortable.Try it!😉
@@doomguy1430 dude I feel like a warrior roaming around the house with this thing 😂😂
@@oneminutefixed5003 lol
Weird, I feel the same about the Firebird but see the Explorer the total opposite of everything you said.
@@doomguy1430 Because ML's look a little wonky after realizing its a V with an Explorer top
The Explorer is one of the most well balanced solid body guitars.
Not when you’re sitting down
@@Notyours.com124 hold it between your legs (bottom right horn) in a classical position... there's a picture of young Jaymz on the toilet doing that
@@Notyours.com124 i play them classical position when sitting and i love it that way

@@Notyours.com124 what!? 😂 they are one of the most comfortable guitars ever when sitting down… it’s not a Flying V
You create the Battery!
🤘🤘🤘🤘
Mikey likes it! 😎
The explorer shape is so nice to play standing up! Everything is where you want to it to be, plus it looks cool as hell
Killer sound and playing. Love it
leaving out that one note before the second gallop is actually pretty sick
Didn’t want Lars to copywrite strike it
Amazing as always ❤️
I ordered a cheap Chinese explorer kit a couple years ago made of "engineered zebrawood" LMAO. And you know what? That SOB is one of the best playing guitars I have! Freaking love the feel of the neck and body.
Great job dude , love your guitar
Great sound and awesome playing!
This is why Het loves EMG pickups.. We could put EMG's on a tele and it would sound almost identical. Different story with passive pickups tho.
Toan is in EMG pickups
I have passive EMG Hetbuckers on an epiphone goth series explorer. Sounds gorgeous
EMG in a tele , Jim Root wants to know your location
Not really. You could put any pickup in two different guitars with everything else the same and theyll sound very similar regardless of active or passive. From what ive seen pickups really dont make the biggest difference in sound, at least not when compared to the differences in amps and pedals etc. youll really just get something brighter or muddier depending on what woods its made with.
@@plack_benis382 Wood certainly makes a difference to the "toan", but for reasons people don't think about enough. The thing with the argument is that what sort of legit tests have been done have proven that even trained musicians can't distinguish any sonic properties associated to different woods in acoustic guitars better than random guessing, so you are fucked when you try that argument with electric guitars.
Pickups make quite a lot of difference, but less so than a number of other factors like type of pickup, location, setup/adjustment, potentiometers/wiring, amps, etc. Every time you change your pickup, you have to dial in everything else to match... which is where a number of these pickup comparisons go very wrong.
They are very comfortable to play which is more important than sound or build which now can be achieved on every configuration, if not by hardware than by simulations
Gorgeous guitar, nice playing dude
That may be why James loves them, I love them because of James
Great vid, love this! 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Vibez Dude !!!
I love how they look
Awesome!
You have a nice, fast right hand. I used to have one, but stopped playing guitar for a few years and lost it. Make sure you always keep in practice.
I look forward to some longer videos of yours as I have subbed.
Stay safe
✌️† 🎸
Happy Birthday James
Happy birthday papa het, one day man I hope i get to play on stage with you, that's my dream🤘🤘
The Explorer is a big classic for metal!
sounds kinda like lamb of god's tone tbh
He likes it because it fits his body type, he mentions it in a interview
Hypnotizing power!!! 🤘
Crushing all that cower!
battery is here to stay!
And that's why I have that exact same ESP Explorer in black. Long live ESP Explorer from the 80s and 90s before the Gibson lawsuit. They are worth thousands of dollars now, very rare. Long live the 80s and 90s barking and long haired James Hetfield and METALLICA. Only the big 5 are legendary.
I get it. It’s the Overall Feel, Sound, and Attitude of it ❤
That shape allows the right hand to lay very close to the strings. Great for sick riffs like Hetfield’s
It is all about the comfort. The one in my icon pic is an 84 that I bought as new in 85. I have had many other guitars over the years but always kept it. At this point its like a marriage.
I’ve got an old Hamer from 86 custom black lacquer with metal flake silver checkerboard pattern finish. Needs a neck reset at the moment. Still plays great
I love this body shape. I ordered a Harley-Benton Extreme-76 BK Classic that's the Explorer style and is black with a white pick guard. Looking forward to its arrival 🤘🏻
Happy bday James
Duuuuuuude 🤘🏼🔥
He used a Japanese Flying V copy King V a lot in the early days. The King V had an invader pickup if I recall.
This is why I love James hetfield
sick.
Nice 🤘😈
Any guitar could have the same pickups and sound the same I'm not sure how this pertains specifically to the explorer
fr though i hate when people say oh this body of guitar is only usefuel for this style or whatever what bs
@@federalagent9950 especially with EMGs. You could literally put EMGs into a bunch of plywood and it'd sound the same as EMGs on an ESP explorer because of the way they work
@@lathrin not really. The location of the pickups in relation to the neck and bridge changes the sound that’s why the bridge pickup sounds different to the neck pickup. Explorers have a sweet spot where the bridge is located route it out and put in a floyd and it’s not going to sound the same.
It’s all small stuff also over wrapping the stop tail piece changes how an explorer sounds (like ass) but do it on an LP no change and nicer to play.
It’s a rabbit hole really.
i just think they look cool and are comfortable
Try this with a strat with these pickups and it will sound completely different
I clearly understood now why hetfield loves Explorer :D
I got this ESP too it’s a fucking beast!!
I know I have one too.
well it looks cool. this is the first thing. the second thing is that, since the strap button is closer to the neck, when hanging it with the same height as something like a strat, explorer looks you hang it lower than strat. same goes for les paul too. this helps create the illusion of being metal you know :d
Im Explorer guy too. Tried SGs, LPs, V's etc...never could bond with em like I did the Explorer. I like the size and shape, and when you pick it up, it makes you want rip riffs.
Great playing dude. Very nice.
Agreed. I think Explorers, Strats and Jazzmasters are the most comfortable guitars!!
Hey! Are those hetsets? If so what’s the height of you bridge pickup if ya know? Thanks! 🤘
I'm gonna say one of the main reasons he loves them is they were the first to just give him as many free guitars as he wants. They allowed him to make his own custom version to his exact specifications and dimension that also carried his name sake. Then they did this consistently and without question or hesitation over the course of 40+ years.
B.T.W it totally sounds like I'm sayin that like it's bad when it's not.
Love my explorer. It's a shame that when I go into a guitar store that the walls cover a fender and Gibson shape, yet no one carries these.
Happy Birthday Papa Het
chugs are on point bro
Happy birthday James Hetfield 🎉🎊💪🤟🤘🎸🎸🎸
What specs is that esp custom. I really need one just like that the 84’ is my favourite all time guitar
I have this exact same guitar
explorer go brrrr
pero el sonido de la guitarra no depende de la guitarra en si, sino de las pastillas y los preamps que le pongas, la guitarra es mera estética y comodidad.
And because they look badass
Hetfield chose the Explorer since they weren't more popular with than the V.
When they toured MOP, he already had two or more Explorers as backup. It's written in their "Making of Master of Puppets" Book.
My favorite, I want to buy one but I dont know which one
What amp is this through?
Love my E-1 koa by shecter
James likes them because of the looks of them, most of his recordings in the studios are done with les pauls and plays the les paul almost half the time live.
Where did you get that esp man. It's a beast
Very hard to find now. the ESP LTD are worth around 2500-3000 the ESP Custom like this one costs around 5000-7000.
What riff is that from :19-:22
You forgot to explain why James likes Explorer guitars.
I just like the shape of the body of the guitar
Love the tone! I'm coming from the world of blues/60's/70's rock and want to learn the first 5 Metallica records as a new challenge. I currently have a plexi and play SGs and P90 loaded LPs. I get close to James' sound from the mid 80s/early 90s with my SGs, but is the secret to dialing in more to do with the EMG pickups or is it the difference between the Explorer and SG bodies or a little bit of both? Thanks in advance!
How did u manage to get an ESP Explorer dude, thats so sick
bro how do u pick that way with the guitar tilted like that?
What do I need to get this type of tone?
1: A guitar with EMG 81 pickups
2: A good metal distortion pedal with a two band parametric mid control (such as the Boss Metal Zone) and/or a good metal distortion pedal and a 7 or 9 band graphic EQ.
3. A decent tube head (Bugera make good affordable ones) or combo amp - run into the clean channel and then the distortion pedal for the high gain channel
Or a guitar with EMG 81's and Mesa-Boogie Mark IV. The former combination is a lot more affordable 😎
what guitar straps do you use?
💜
Crispy
Can I Buy one of this if I ask for it at the Custom shop dealer?
How much does one cost?
is there any neck dive problem with that guitar?
Yo, you need to tell me how you get that guitar and how much it cost, I really want an Explorer guitar soo bad (prefer ESP) that is cheap under 500$
My question is where can I buy a guitar that looks something like it
Harley bent has one for like 300+ or you can get a esp ex the model for like 800 i think
What amp do you use?
Because James Hetfield is fucking amazing that’s why he loves the explorer shape guitars!! he rules!! 🤘🎸🤘🎸😎😎
By far the coolest guitar to showboat
what pedals?
What Model of ESP is that? MX-220?
What pedals you r using
Dude you need a relic seafoam green Strat for I Disappear 🤘🏻
no this is why explorer loves james hetfield
Eb tuning makes it sound much more evil
My favorite tuning ever. 😌
You can also use it as coffee table when not playing.
What amp are u using that sounded tight and bad ass..
Thanks ! It’s a non boosted rectifier from axe fx 3 and a very bright capture of a Mesa 4x12 cab with an sm57 (I like it to play by myself) but it isn’t the most refined tone for a mix I must say lol
@@gallettiguitartones thanks.for gettimg back man, ax fx huh.....sounds freakin brutal I think, have to get me the fm3 one of these days

Got this tone with a line6 spider 3 amp.
Thats exactly the amp I have for my ESP Explorer
@@MrCarlitosway713 it's a brilliant amp
What? Did somebody say extreme green channel?
0:19 riff name?
Explorer shaped bodies are so balanced for me..
So, why does James love explorers?
i could play a MoP cover with a telecaster lol, its all about the pickups amps and effects
please tell me theres a full cover of this sounds way better then the origanell recording
Omg where did you get that guitar
Bought it from a friend
I think the Explorer shape is the ultimate ass kicking, cool AF metal guitar. More than the Flying V. They are both equally historic, original, and influential, but the Explorer is just slightly more over the top than the V. Heavy metal may have been birthed on the SG and Flying V, but I still think the Explorer is cooler.
