Performance of Loscil at [F]luister, Dordrecht / Netherlands on March 31, 2013. Video from Renier Mouthaan: vimeo.com/renie... About Fluister: fluister.org/ fluister.org/pa...
People are commenting how boring the crowd and how sterile the setting... Go to 7:30 and watch the slow pan... I see a group of strangers brought together in respectful silence observing, and almost obeying, only sound. There are men, women, young and old. Some have eyes closed, others open. Some thinking others escaping thought. In a world full of big, brash and ever increasing levels of greed and ostentation these people have taken an hour out of their lives to sit and observe sound...perfect, crystalline and pure with nothing else. I thought it looked tribal in a sense, like a gathering around a shaman who will unlock the portal to the other side? But most of all it just looked beautiful. Like people hearing Loscil in its purest, untapped form.
Same here, live music doesn't always need to be a obnoxious party of deafening noise and screaming. This music does do just that or at least it's a good tool as well as enjoyable. And anyone who feels things like that probably has too much going on in their heads anyways making this music so much more helpful. I would pay even more to go to a show like this then any other ordinary rock concert or whatever. Call me a boring person all you want but listening to music like this more often at home breeds a much healthier environment than constantly cranking the volume high and turning on your poison of choice. Don't get me wrong I do all the time but there's a time and place for louder, head pounding music and it shouldn't be abused unless you really wanna feel terrible over something meant to make your life more colorful anyways like music. I almost always have ambient on in the background at home and everyone always enjoys it and asks what I'm listening to. Taken out of context it seems no one cares that it's "boring" at least. Would help if people also had a good sound system too because listening to music like this with the equivalent of musical tin cans won't exactly do it much good either.
Totally agree. The way we listen to live music is now changing, but some don't realise this. We may be happy (I am at least) to sit silently in front of our hi-fis and enjoy music with our eyes closed, reading a book, or just thinking about the day, but when it comes to sitting in front of a computer musician we haven't quite got 'comfortable' as yet. Clubs should provide a better listening space for this type of music - cushions, books, space to lie down, sofas etc.
haha idk why people expect the crowd to anything but quiet. I mean think about it logically... this is music that's supposed to be intimate and thought provoking. This isn't a metal show guys lol
The fact that this video exists to me is unbelievable. It's good to see people would come see him live because they understand the connection that loscil brings to them
To add to that I have to admit I've been back here several times to watch/listen the video. Unfortunately you don't get to see Loscil live in my part of the world.
This man is clearly a Genius. He makes Music in its purest form that goes straight to your mind and your heart so deeply that you couldn’t feel yourself by connecting only to the environment
Setlist: 1. Dub for Cascadia - 0:20 - 5:53 2. Sickbay - 5:54 - 11:17 3. Steam - 11:18 - 17:12 4. Prairie Trains - 17:13 - 27:59 5. Second Narrows - 28:00 - 35:19 6. Estuarine - 35:20 - 41:00 Might have made some mistakes, but I'm just getting into this guy's work now and I saw that nobody wrote down the setlist yet, so here it is, I tried my best.
I remember one point in my life where I was going for hikes in the middle of the night. Just silence and flickering lights in the distance. For hours until sunrise, this music reminds me of that time. Especially magic in winter times
mnmlst I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him a few times(one was a High Plains show). It’s indescribable. Scott is also an incredibly friendly and humble person and will hang out and talk after.
4 more years :) this is gold. Indian artists are coming up big as well in the scene, I'd say. For instance, this guy- ambient ruclips.net/video/y6_UKs9fz2M/видео.htmlsi=aeAjFJh_ensYGuF7
As someone who makes similar music, I can't help but feel bad for anyone who has to perform this stuff live. People say "ahh it's so boring to watch" but the reality is that other than coming up with some sort of visual show, that's just how it is with this sound. I imagine most ambient artists aren't exactly thrilled to be playing live for a number of reasons unless the environment is just right. That said, I hate how judgmental people get about a guy behind a laptop.
So you're judging people judging people ? That said, I guess this can be listened to with eyes closed. Why not shut off the senses that have no use in a particular moment ?
Jestin Jund well it IS boring to watch. cuz it IS a guy behind a laptop. I go to ambient gigs every chance I get cuz I love the genre, but that doesn't mean that most are visually interesting cuz they're not.
Jestin Jund While I see where you're coming from, the fact of the matter is that things like PureData and the sort allow for the generation of visuals quite easily. I love Loscil, but I do enjoy a bit more theatricality in the performance of ambient.
17:10 he begins my favorite song, Prairie Trains Some train on double tracks like a huge platform cruising through endless prairies. It has a power source which is a spinning gyroscope. Has anyone realized yet, ambient music isn't a song, it's a place.
The point of live performance is not necessarily visual, particularly in the case of music. I saw Phillip Glass live recently - a total visual dud. But experiencing the music, played by the composer himself, was transcendental. It was so much more powerful than any recording I'd ever heard. I'd love to "see" Loscil live for the same reason - to experience that connection with the artist, only possible live. Another reason to attend visually boring live performances is to experience the event with similarly engaged others in the audience - the social experience should not be underestimated. Finally, attendance at a live performance gives you a kind of access to the artist - to thank them or to have some input on their work - which is otherwise quite unavailable.
van het beste dat er in het genre op y tube te vinden is,excellent.Een bijzonder mooi cadeau van een uitgesproken getalenteerde artiest.Nog ! zou ik zo zeggen...
I just discovered Loscil because he was played at SomaFm… now that the record store has opened again after the lockdown, this discovery is gonna be quite expensive. :-)
i was on some stuff when i first played this. my eyes were closed and i felt like i had an out of body experience- like on some astral level i was in those mystic mountains in china, floating in the air... weightless..
Ah, fond memories of going to (F)luister. It is a play on words, "Fluister" is Dutch for whisper, and "Luister" means listening. So yeah, you're supposed to be quiet. Btw, I get very annoyed when people WOOP WOOP during songs at concerts like Dead can dance. If you find the audience boring, what would you rather have seen? People talking through the performance, walking in and out, cheering him on? It's more like a meditative experience, I guess both for the artist as the audience. I also recommend Irezumi (Bialystok, Endurance etc), Biosphere, 36 (sun riders), Namlook, Visions.
I LOVE YOU MAN ! I've been listening to all your albums lately and your stuff is different from the rest of the ambient artists here on youtube I get sick of how most ambient artists copy each other, YOUR STUFF IS ORIGINAL !
Some here are thinking, smoke a bowl or take some mushrooms. If necessary, those things are for the initiate. In my humble opinion, growth is about taking it from there, and leaving those things behind.
I was afraid to watch this live version, but its interesting seeing the audience close their eyes and assimilate the artists work. It's like they are painting a picture in their minds of what it means to them or just thinking about whatever it is they have in mind.
This artist is new to me. Great to see more people really improving and refining the genre. Man with a Movie Camera by Biosphere is one method of justifying visuals? If it was me I'd dim the lights and use some feint strobes, maybe a few with different resonances to give the impression of movement in 3D :)
There is a lot of chin-stroking going on... But then how does one listen to ambient music live in individual chairs? Beanbags or those reclining couches like in airport would surely be more comfy
All things are full of weariness, who can utter it ? the eyes are not satisfied with seeing nor the ears with hearing, I said in my heart "I will be wise" but it was so far from me ! I suppose we all get out of his incredible music what we come in with. If I were still single I would ask to marry the woman in the audience who kept her eyes closed the longest or the woman who in her innermost parts was desperately trying to say the unsayable as one right word after another never came. "We think by feeling. What is there to know? I wake to sleep and take my waking slow." "What is madness but nobility of soul at odds with circumstance" Theodore Roethke
Stasis é o melhor dele. Um album capaz de me acalmar, me levar para outra dimensão. Ouço-o quando estou caminhando, e me imagino andando em um planeta desabitado, como um astronauta. Prazeroso.

An unusual mix of styles and innovative use of instruments are clear requirements.

What does “live” means in this context?
@@danielhorton9929 I mean it’s live remixing of prerecorded tracks? I don’t see any keyboards (other than the laptop’s 😂)

I would give my kidney to see a live performance of Loscil. Damn, this people are so lucky, I'm happy they had that chance.
I had the opportunity to see him in Lyon Fr, in a boat, it was a nice experience ! Plus i had the opportunity to talk with Scott afterwards ! :)
mnmlst I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him a few times(one was a High Plains show). It’s indescribable. Scott is also an incredibly friendly and humble person and will hang out and talk after.
I have nothing but love for Scott..truly a magnificent surreal artist. Big ups from India.
4 year old comment, but anyway - I guess in a way all artists are surreal.

what this man has accomplished i will forever respect. thank you for blessing the world with your beautiful sounds.
No cellphones in the audience. Im proud of this people, them gives the respect that the artist deserves. Bravo
He really does create that rainy, foggy, coastal vibe well.
Ahead of it's time; this is the perfect music to help you stay sane in a lockdown. Thanks!
