Cilla was a coat attendant at the Iron Door Club, Temple Street, and sang there under the wing of Sam Leach before she moved to the Cavern. Sam is the little known promoter who staged the Beatles before they ever found fame via the Cavern.
Cilla was from Liverpool, became friends of the Beatles and other bands. Her mother used to get her hair done by Ringo's mother [or was it vice versa?]. She became a coat/hat check girl in the famous Cavern Club, the bands found out she could sing and would let her do a couple songs with them backing her up. Soon she had the Beatles' manager be her manager. she got a recording contract, George Martin, the Beatles' producer, produced some of her records. She became a big star in England, had come to America and did a few Ed Sullivan shows but it didn't seem to work. She returned home, and over the years became a major star singing, a variety show, a game show, just an all around great personality. I believe that's George Martin directing the orchestra in the background
This Bacharach/Hal David penned classic was originally recorded by legendary Dionne Warwick in 1963. This particular version by Cilla Black was produced by legendary Beatles producer George Martin. She does a great job with it.
Dionne recorded it first and was not happy that it was so quickly covered by Cilla. Many songs by US R&B artists were picked up in the English Invasion. The Rolling Stones grabbed Irma Thomas's "Time is On My Side". Bessie Banks first heard "Go Now" on the radio only to realize that it was covered by the The Moody Blues. It was hoped that these would be crossovers from the R&B Charts to Billboard Top 100.
Linda Ronstadt's version is my favorite. I'm not sure it appeared on any of her LPs, but there is ONE video here on YT. Beautiful, of course! Bacharach/David!
Dionne Warwick is an American singer. You guys have never heard of Cilla before but - if you get the time - try and look-up a TV mini-series called 'Cillla' which shows her life (including her friendship with the Beatles). Cilla Black wasn't just a singer, she also hosted Several tv shows: Cilla ( here own BBC Prime time show), Surprise, Surprise & Blind Date ( Saturday night dating show)
ITV over here did a 3 part series about her life a few years ago prior to her death, just called "Cilla" . . .Portraying her role in the series was an actress (and a bit of a singer) called "Sheridan Smith" . . . who actually sang her songs herself, even to trying to sound like her for the series - and no-one believed that it was actually her singing - (even me at first!) . . . even Cilla herself was just as amazed at how she sounded and also how good she was! . . . I think her version from the series of, "Anyone Who Had A Heart" from it is available in full on YT, but her version of, "You're My World" in the series was sadly almost chopped in half, I think . . . So, the first is well worth checking out for any kind of live vocal comparison, too . . . Enjoy!
She had the same manager Brian Epstein and knew the Beatles from their Cavern days. I am one of those who mentioned her previously. And this song and performance!
Cilla Black could sing like no one, but she also became huge in UK as a TV presenter. I remember when I moved to London in 99 and she was everywhere . She was funny, kind and extremely smart. It was a shock when she suddenly died on a holiday accident. I’m happy you’ve enjoyed this song. Please bring more CB to this channel. 🙌🏼
This is one of those songs done by two incredible artists. Both do such a phenomenal rendition it seems wrong to select one as the best. Edit: I just listened to Linda Ronstadt sing this song. OMG all three of these artists do an incredible job with it. That tells me that the song is simply incredible regardless of the incredible talent signing it.
Cilla was also a massive tv presenter who famously quit live on tv as she didn't like the way the show was changing... powerful woman. Love this song 🎵 ❤
I never thought I'd see the day where Jay and Amber delved into the music of cilla Black. She was a big star in the 60s and the beatles loved her because they both came from Liverpool, England. She went on to have a highly successful career in TV as well and she was very much beloved by us in the UK and was a big loss when she sadly passed away
Priscilla Maria Veronica White (later Willis) OBE, professionally known as Cilla Black, was the cloakroom attendant at The Cavern who dreamt of becoming a star and became a national treasure and internationally successful singer. She was friends with a couple of the Beatles, several other 'Merseybeat' artists and, due to being a lifelong friend of his wife Marie, Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues. In her later career, she became better known as a TV presenter but always used to sing on all but one of her shows. Sadly, she died in 2015 as the result of a stroke brought on by having hit her head on the balcony wall having tripped in her holiday home in Spain. She had spoken to her son after the incident and said that she was going to go to bed as she felt dizzy and had a headache. She was found dead some hours later.
Thanks for this great song, one of my favourite Cilla Black songs along with "You're My World". I am originally from near Liverpool, UK where she and The Beatles were from, they used to tease her & call her "Cyril". I actually once met her after one of her great concerts, she was a lovely lady & still sadly missed.
In 1964 Cilla Black was the '5th Beatle' as she played the Cavern with the Beatles in 1962. That is Beatles music director George Martin leading the orchestra :)
Helen Shapiro was the most popuar singer in the UK before the Beatles when she hit her stride in 1961 as a 14 year old. The Beatles were on the undercard.
Offt, I just love hearing her voice. This takes me back to how incredible she was also here in Australia & also in New Zealand during that time. Thanks for doing this one
I grew up watching a show called Blind Date in the late 80's and Cilla was the host, and i only discovered she was a singer some years later. She has got such a great voice and her personality and sense of humour is just as impressive, she is considered a treasure in the U.K and rightly so!
This was the only version of the song I knew as a wee girl growing up in the 60’s. I loved the drama and passion of the music and Cilla’s voice. I think because she sang it in her own accent it carried a raw emotional quality.
If you look quickly you can see a young George Martin conducting the orchestra. Someone else has recommended “Step Inside Love” and I agree. It was written specifically for her by Paul McCartney. Somewhere here in RUclips land there’s a recording of him teaching her the song (he plays acoustic guitar as accompaniment). Another song- I’ve Wrong Before, written by Randy Newman, would also be an excellent follow up
When I was a little boy, I was obsessed with Cilla. I got taken backstage to meet her after a concert. She sat me on her knee, chatted to me and signed my autograph book. I still have it and told her the story when, all grown up, I met her decades later at a party. She chuckled at the anecdote.
Cilla Black.... "You Are My World" Anyone Who Had a Heart is a Dionne Warwick original classic. You need to listen to her original version. Dionne has a long list of songs they you should check out as you have barely scratched the surface. "Anyone Who Had A Heart" " A House Is Not A Home" "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" "Walk On By" "I Say Little Little Prayer" "Alfie" "Don't Make Me Over" "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" "This Girl's In Love With You" And many more.

Oh, and one more song from 1964…Georgie Fame’s song, YEAH YEAH…..AND ONE MORE 😄….Sonny & Cher’s BABY DON’T GO ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Oh…those were THE days!❤️
Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. Can I start by saying this is not "Celia" Black. She is Cilla Black. It's pronounced "Silla" and she is amongst the handful of artists that were known by her first name and she is recognisable from her unique voice. The Beatles did love her, and they were great friends, probably because they were all from Liverpool and were on the same music scene. Cilla was so much more than a singer though, in the UK. She is probably best known for hosting Blind Date for many years and famously resigning live on air, because she had been told the show was being axed, due to being outdated. There is also a viral moment of an incident with her in a restaurant. If you search, I'm sure you'll find it. You might also find that there was a miniseries of her life called Cilla in 2014 with the fabulous Sheridan Smih playing the part. So much more than a singer. Æx 🙏
Oh, I forgot to mention another interesting fact about our Cilla. She was born Black and became White later in life... the opposite of Michael Jackson... She was born with the name Priscilla Maria Veronica White and she became Cilla Black after being mistakenly referred to as "Cilla Black," rather than her real name, in an article in the first edition of the local music newspaper Mersey Beat by the paper's publisher, Bill Harry. She subsequently decided to keep the name. Æx 🙏
@peterbrown1012 Yes, Sheridan is brilliant and so talented. We didn't know how much talent she had back in the day when she starred in 'Two Pints of Lager and a Packet Of Crisps', even though that was great too.
Lennon and McCartney even wrote a few songs for Black, including “Love of the Loved” in 1963 and “It's For You,” which was released a year later and also features McCartney on piano.
Marvelous!!! I saw Cilla Black the same year (‘63) the Beattles came to the USA . SHE WAS IN A MOVIE THAT I saw at the local drive-in movie theater. I went right out and bought her record album.
Some used to belittle performers who don't write their own songs. While I have great admiration for singer/songwriters, I love that those who have outstanding abilities either way can have their talents showcased if they don't have the ability/inclination to do it themselves. We wouldn't have voices like Cilla's, Shirley Bassey's, Dionne Warwick's, Dusty Springfield's etc. otherwise. Nor would we have songs like this one. That's why I'm loving the reactors' first time experiences. Takes me back to mine!
I know what you mean. I do like the songwriters to be credited, though. After all, it was them that came up with the music and the lyrics. Max Martin, Dianne Warren and Guy Chambers are examples of songwriters who have never performed songs really in public but have written so many hits for other artists over the decades.
The soundtrack of my childhood..... My Dad was a big, big fan of Auntie Cil!!! Shye has sooo much to offer you. Thank you for reacting to this Legendary Artist.
She literally started out as the cloak girl for the Beatles. They used to call her up on stage to sing with them in the Cavern. Then they convinced their manager to manage her. And then they wrote songs for her. Paul says in his book that when Cilla died in 2015 he was just as much cut as when he lost John and George.
Cilla's first UK #1 single. Bacharah loved her voice. She recorded his song 'Alfie' in 1966, which he oversaw alongside George Martin. There are so many great Cilla songs. Check out 'You're My World', 'Conversations', 'Don't Answer Me', 'Step Inside Love', 'Surround Yourself With Sorrow', 'Love of the Loved', and 'Liverpool Lullaby'.
Cilla, pronounced SILLA. was famous when I was a teenager. Since you are doing Great Britain, I am still crusading for you to visit the Great Dame Shirley Bassey
This is a cover of a Bacharach & David song that was originally recorded by Dionne Warwick who had a Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit with her original version. Cilla had 2 UK No1s and a string of top hits between 1964-1974. She transitioned to become the highest paid TV star in the UK presenting some of the top shows right up to the 2000s when she decided to retire "at the top". She had her own weekly Saturday Night show which was a first in the UK for a female artist. Cilla was a beloved personality here in the UK- a true legend.
She could sing, that's for sure, but she was also a complete natural on television and had a huge down to earth personality that British people rightly loved. There was only one Cilla.
The 'jazziness' you mentioned comes from the fact that the song was composed by the most sophisticated composer of the 1960s, Burt Bacharach and just a few of his other gems that you'll be familiar with are 'I Say A Little Prayer', 'Close To You', 'Walk On By', 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' and 'What The World Needs Now is Love'. Sadly he died last year at the age of 94.
Bachrach and David songs are such a big part of my musical life... growing up, there was ALWAYS one of their songs on the Top 40 lists. Cilla (real name Priscilla White) was an amazing talent.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for reacting to the wonderful Cilla. You're My World is another outstanding song of hers which showcases her unique voice.
Cilla Black belonged to the same management and production group as the Beatles. The orchestra conductor in that video looked a lot like George Martin - the Beatles' producer and arranger. She was known as the Beatles' "little sister".
Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote some amazing classics throughout the fifties and sixties. This was originally written for Dionne Warwick who recorded it in '63. In1963 they co-wrote 14 songs and 8 charted.
Thank you for sharing this amazing performance. Cilla Black was one of the great singers out of England. I remember seeing her on The Ed Sullivan Show and falling in love with her. You're My World was a favorite of mine. ❤❤❤😊😊😊
When Cilla topped the UK charts in 1964 with this number, it was the first time in two years that a female artist had reached the No 1 spot. The Daily Telegraph, then as now a notably right-wing paper, and one which usually regarded "pop" (they always put the word in quotes!) music with disdain, considered the feat remarkable enough to actually merit a write-up in their pages. And it wasn't long after that that they began printing the Top Ten every week. So good on Cilla for waking up those old fuddy-duddies!
Her "You're My World" is so powerful.

We still love Cilla so much in England she so missed
You'll love the Dionne Warwick original of this one, written by the legendary Hal David/Burt Bacharach !!!
Dionne + Hal + Burt = Timeless music !!!
The Dionne version is what I think is an absolute perfection of a song
Please listen to Dionne Warwick do this song too!!
Dinner and Cillia had similar vocal styles.
Both versions were in the chart in 64 at the same time. Cilla got to No.1
Absolutely...You're My World - You MUST MUST MUST listen to You're My World. She will knock your socks off.
Cilla was also a massive tv presenter who famously quit live on tv as she didn't like the way the show was changing... powerful woman.
Love this song 🎵 ❤
Cilla was not only one of the nicest people ever, she was an amazing talent and quite literally a national treasure 💗💗 such a beautiful person x
Really not true she was vile to almost everyone off camera.
Cilla Black _ Your My World: live TV performance May 1964
I never thought I'd see the day where Jay and Amber delved into the music of cilla Black. She was a big star in the 60s and the beatles loved her because they both came from Liverpool, England. She went on to have a highly successful career in TV as well and she was very much beloved by us in the UK and was a big loss when she sadly passed away
I had mentioned her to them several times :)
One of the greatest female vocalists.
Her actual name was Priscilla White. Cilla Black was her stage name.
Her father worked on the Liverpool docks and was given the nickname of "Mixed Up Minstrel" because he didn't know if he was white or black! 😂
She chuckled at the anecdote.
same happened with me and jimmy savile
@@DEANKEITH-f2p Eeeeek!
She was tremendous. Moving from pop star to Tv show host and Family favourite.
Cilla Black.... "You Are My World"
Anyone Who Had a Heart is a Dionne Warwick original classic. You need to listen to her original version.
Dionne has a long list of songs they you should check out as you have barely scratched the surface.
"Anyone Who Had A
Heart"
" A House Is Not A
Home"
"Do You Know The Way
To San Jose"
"Walk On By"
"I Say Little Little Prayer"
"Alfie"
"Don't Make Me Over"
"I'll Never Fall In Love
Again"
"This Girl's In Love With
You"
And many more.
Don't forget "Walk on By"!
Cilla had a more powerful voice like Tom Jones which is why I suggested her to Jay and Amber They love Tom
Kathie says…I have loved and listened to Cilla Black since 1964…also, Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw, and Petula Clark. Please listen to Sandy Shaw’s song: GIRL DON’T COME…Dusty Springfield’s song: STAY AWHILE….and Petula Clark’s song: DOWNTOWN!! Oh, and one more song from 1964…Georgie Fame’s song, YEAH YEAH…..AND ONE MORE 😄….Sonny & Cher’s BABY DON’T GO ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Oh…those were THE days!❤️
You’re right Cilla was a national treasure.
Oh what a fabulous song!! Mega hit too
The fabulous, fabulous 60s....
You're my world is another great song by Cilla. I'm sure you will love that one too.
Just one of many great British singers Australia loved them too.
Æx 🙏
She was born Priscilla White, she changed her name to Cilla Black after Mersey Beat ran an article on her and got her name wrong.
Sheridan Smith sang all of Cilla's songs herself on the mini series so well it was hard to realise it wasn't Cilla.
@@brendanfromireland Isn't that what I said? 🤔
@peterbrown1012 Yes, Sheridan is brilliant and so talented. We didn't know how much talent she had back in the day when she starred in 'Two Pints of Lager and a Packet Of Crisps', even though that was great too.
I loved yor comments it made my eyes water. Im 68 and was able to listen to this a a child. Thank you very much
Lennon and McCartney even wrote a few songs for Black, including “Love of the Loved” in 1963 and “It's For You,” which was released a year later and also features McCartney on piano.
Cilla was much loved, and she went on to present two tv shows in Britain for around 20 years. My favourite of hers was called Something Tells Me.
Thank you for listening to Cilla Black. Overlooked by American audiences. She and Dusty Springfield were my favorites back in the 60's.
Beautiful Cilla. A Liverpool icon & a national treasure. She was such a talented woman
Her life story was put together in "Cilla" staring Sheridan Smith as Cilla was one of the best made programs I have ever seen.
She was a great friend of the Bee Gees!!
Love her singing, gave me goosebumps!! Such a huge voice from a little lady.
Cilla, pronounced SILLA.
was famous when I was a teenager. Since you are doing Great Britain, I am still crusading for you to visit the Great Dame Shirley Bassey
They have reacted to Goldfinger
Short for Priscilla, original last name White.
Although they did react to Shirley, it was an audio track. Really hoping they go back to her and do a video of her performing.
Cilla Black is a GEM!! :) SO GLAD to see you-guys reacting to her!! GREAT PICK, YA'LL!!!
Wondered when you'd get around to Cilla - 'You're My World' and 'Alfie' are my two faves in addition to this.
Alfie and You're My World. Alfie makes me cry. Thank you for bringing Cilla to your channel.
Listen to her song ". Alfie"
I can’t help but tear up to this, my nan loved her and this song. Memories are so powerful ❤
"STEP INSIDE LOVE" IS YOUR NEXT CILLA TRACK💯💥💯
She used to sing at the Cavern in Liverpool with the Beatles, she knew them. Thank you for showing this.. 🇬🇧
I am from Liverpool and have always loved Cilla Black!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the respect for she was a treasure in the uk. Back in the 60s 70s and 80s Much love lady.
Great singer and she was funny
Cilla was and is an British treasure, so talented and versatile
I remember at the time she was referred to as the female Beatle. I still play her albums in the car. She became a popular TV celebrity in later years.
Brill, thank you so much for reacting to this 👍
I absolutely loved her when I was a kid.
73 from New Zealand and still remember Cilla Black's songs!!
This reached #1 in 1964, also "You're My World" reached #1 the same year. Please check out "Alfie" ( Live ) it's so beautiful too from 1966. ❤
Thank you, thank you, thank you for reacting to the wonderful Cilla. You're My World is another outstanding song of hers which showcases her unique voice.
Note: That's George Martin directing the orchestra! :)
"You're my World" was her other UK number one and probably my favourite of hers. Much love from England 🏴
Linda Ronstadt also covered this song in the 90s on her Winter Light album
And it was an AMAZING cover. I mentioned it as well.
Cilla was great and loved for more than just singing.
And check out "You Are My World " - I believe it was written for her.
This was actually an Italian song translated into English which Cilla performed so beautifully 😊
Thank you for sharing this amazing performance. Cilla Black was one of the great singers out of England. I remember seeing her on The Ed Sullivan Show and falling in love with her. You're My World was a favorite of mine. ❤❤❤😊😊😊
A powerful song and voice. Check out "You're My World". Another really big hit for her.
Oooooh, Our Cillla! Much loved and missed! Big star in New Zealand as well - both for her music and her variety TV shows!
I'm sure others have said this, but She knew the Beatles when they were just starting out -
When Cilla topped the UK charts in 1964 with this number, it was the first time in two years that a female artist had reached the No 1 spot.
