When it comes to great chick flicks, My Girl, Sleepless In Seattle and Princess Bride all say hi. Good chick flicks don’t insult women’s or men’s intelligence. On the back end of that (literally), you have Mamma Mia and 50 Shades. Legally Blonde is somewhere in between. It’s the equivalent of the new Bill and Ted movie showing the main characters all grown up as lawyers. It doesn’t really work if you look at it like that. But Reese Witherspoon is charismatic enough to pull it off, even if she’s just playing a stereotypic valley girl who happens somehow to be an attorney.
Elle saying "what, like it's hard?" in response to her ex asking about her getting into Harvard is an extra burn after you know *he* was put on the waiting list. So it was, in fact, hard for him to get into Harvard lol
@@kcirtapelyk6060 Because the way she expressed her cleverness (good grades in fashion subjects, being head of a sorority) was not something that fit into his idea of intelligence.
Yes!! I loved that line. Obviously she knows it was, she worked her freaking butt off to get in, she just wanted Warner to understand that ANYONE could get into Harvard if they put their minds to it.
To prepare for her role as Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon spent two weeks studying the behavior of sorority girls, as she did not wish to portray a stereotypical airhead sorority image. She states on the DVD commentary that they were all very kind and polite, and she enjoyed her time with them. She also observed women shopping from the café at Neiman Marcus, and attended law school for a day.
The thing about this movie is that it deconstructs the stereotypes so thoroughly. Even though there's a joke about Elle getting in because of her looks, in reality, she was obviously the perfect candidate; she is clearly brilliantly intelligent and creative, has a business degree and leadership experience, got an almost perfect score on the notoriously difficult placement exam, and is clearly passionate. The point of the movie is not that she gets smarter and more serious, it's that she was ALWAYS smart, being bubbly and stereotypically feminine didn't make her any less intelligent, and she succeeds the most when she is being the most true to herself and not trying to conform to anyone else's standards. Also -- the implication is that Elle was Warner's "side piece" without knowing it, which is why he got engaged to Vivian so quickly and why Vivian hated her from the start (they were already together and long distance, both from old money families and "classy") -- the Jackie/Marilyn analogy, etc (which Elle didn't pick up on because to her Marilyn was a success businesswoman, not the "dumb side piece" the patriarchy likes to cast her as.) There's an AMAZING video essay here on RUclips about old money vs new money tensions in this story that actually adds a lot of context to the movie. I highly recommend it.
Not an argument, but a sincere question: How did "the patriarchy" paint Marilyn Monroe like a "dumb side piece" when she created that personality trait herself? She had choices. No one told her to get it on with the Kennedy brothers. That was her own bad decision. Monroe was a star because she had talent and was well paid for it. But, on her own time, she controlled the narrative and getting into affairs with married men (who were brothers) wasn't the best thing she'd ever done. Also, blaming her decisions on "the patriarchy' robs her of agency and ownership of her life. And it pretends that, "the matriarchy" had nothing to say about it; especially Married women. So, I just want to clarify what you mean so I can understand it better
Woah, I never thought Warner was with Vivian the whole time, but it does make sense! I'll rewatch with that in view to see if I pick up on any evidence of that filmmakers trying to give us that impression.
Watched it and loved it, reminded me of some scenes in The Crown when Margaret Thatcher goes to Balmoral and dresses in fancy, colorful clothes to go on a hunt, whereas all the born aristocrats are wearing countryside clothes.
The counselor said she needed at least a 175 to get in. The LSAT question we heard was a real sample question from the actual test. This is one of the few instances that implements the "study with distractions" method, and it pays off. Basically: never try to study quietly. It'll do nothing but make it worse for when you take the actual test. You study with distractions, anything quieter will feel like a piece of cake. And on the flip side: if it is noisy, now you're used to it. And as for her score: A perfect score is a 180. And she got a 179.
The study with distractions recommendation would probably be different person-to-person. I need silence and to be alone to be able to study, but I'm a great test taker. I need it silent to get all the information into my head. But once it is there, it can flow pretty easily out during the test so I've never had a problem. I wouldn't have changed anything about my study habits.

7:34 You may think it's pointless, but she did demonstrate her point: you cannot afford to second guess yourself in the courtroom, because that results in you losing your case for your client. Or, think of it like this: He was right, but he didn't know that. If you're going to be a lawyer, you NEED to know that.
This, Mean Girls and The Devil Wears Prada are my favorite chick flicks. And I was lucky enough to see all 3 in the theater. Also the actor who played the tall Dorky David (Oz Perkins) is the son of famous actor Anthony Perkins. Who played Norman Bates in 1960's Psycho.
What I like about Elle is that she's always saying positive things - even when she's insulting Vivien saying she "dresses up like a frigid bitch" she's still not technically saying Vivien is one. She was kind to the salesclerk, even while thoroughly demonstrating that she's not just a dumb blonde with daddy's plastic. And then she's over it and doesn't hold a grudge, or talk trash later. I also love the fact that her dingbat friend (dumb brunette?) just casually speaks Vietnamese. These are ladies with unsuspected depths.
6:53 the real brilliance of the way he says this doesn't truly pay off until later, when we find out he only got in because he pulled some strings with his dad, and SHE got in on her own merits.
Love love love this movie! This movie was so influential in fighting back against the dumb blonde stereotype, which as a smart blonde myself was wonderful to see. This movie also puts emphasis on women helping women, from Elle's sorority supporting her, to even her law school prof. It also shows that women can be interested in girly things and still be smart and successful
I love this movie because it doesnt shy away from having the sterotypically "feminine" girl who also is smart, and kind and loyal. Even the whole sorority is shown in a positive light. There isnt any "catty" behavior between them. It was a really refreshing tone to see. Because in most other films of this genre, you know she would have the been the *witch*.

This and EuroTrip are my two favourite 'inspirational movies' that I'll put on whenever I have an uphill battle ahead of me to achieve some personal goal (academic or otherwise).
I simply ADORE this film- mostly because of Jennifer Coolidge. 🤣 However, Legally Blonde the Musical is the quintessential version for me. The musical numbers the side character development, the pacing and the emotional impact are almost perfection. The whole thing is on RUclips is you want to watch it on your own time Seb. So glad you loved this one. Cheers!
Fun fact: Elle was so smart and did so well on the LSAT tests, initially she needed at least a 175, but she got a 179, which is one point away from a perfect score that is 180.
Definitely a classic! I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this film and its sequel, but I definitely have watched it a lot! Saw it in theaters when it came out. Rented it so friends who hadn’t seen it could see it. And anytime it’s been played on television I have stopped and watched it. It’s just a fun film to watch! I enjoy the character of Elle Woods and seeing her effect the world around her. I was kinda sad they didn’t make more sequels, but I guess either they couldn’t think of anything else or they didn’t think they’d make enough money from any more. So many memorable lines from this film and the sequel film! My friends and I have definitely randomly quoted them at each other. Great video reaction! Glad you enjoyed it!!
Justice for CHUCK! He got thrown under the bus. Also, the funny part? Elle is watching _General Hospital_ and the actress who plays Amy is an actor from the show!
The musical version is REALLY good. Vivian's story arc is also very good. The guy Elle pretends to have broken up with so he can get in with the girls is the son of Tony Perkins, from Psycho.
Omg the movie that inspired me to be a solicitor - my literal fav!! 🤦🏻♂️🤣 But on another note - Why is Seb so beautifully handsome though??? 🥹 I feel like he is my best friend and he doesn’t even know it ❤️ 😂
I love your reactions and sooooo excited for you to see this one. I watched this the night before I took the LSATs back in the 2010s. Needed that Elle Woods energy! Please do Sweet Home Alabama soon!!!
I love how most people watching the movie does not understand the point of the snap, like the understand the bend to draw the eyes to the butt but not the snap. Well the snap is to enunciate the chest, the arms push up the chest for extra attention and especially in person it would be a lot more noticeable and eye drawing.
I saw this in the movie theater when it 1st came out. I wasn't expecting it to be any good, but I love this movie. The more I see it the better I like it. The bend & snap, "You Bitch". Classics. It was a very entertaining movie.
My two college best friends and I had all dated the same guy (at different times, lol). We bonded over how much of a jerk he was. So yes, it's very true!

And another one of Elle's friends, the one who said "Vote for Elle", was in White Chicks.
@@lalalalalalwlla Omg true!
Oh, yeah! We fully support your love for this movie. Honestly, it's so well-done, it's almost impossible to not enjoy it!
Thanks for your reaction and commentary! Always great to rewatch one of my favorites with a good company!
This is one of my go-to movie when i'm having a bad day.
You wearing these wigs... 🤣🤣💖 That is dedication man.
This and EuroTrip are my two favourite 'inspirational movies' that I'll put on whenever I have an uphill battle ahead of me to achieve some personal goal (academic or otherwise).
Seb my man. Awesome reaction and wig. I hope you go to the club rockin it.
I always forget how much I love this movie until I watch it. Love your reaction.
How can you get better than this film?
The musical.
An absolute work of art.
Filmed on Broadway. Worth a watch!
I simply ADORE this film- mostly because of Jennifer Coolidge. 🤣
However, Legally Blonde the Musical is the quintessential version for me.
The musical numbers the side character development, the pacing and the emotional impact are almost perfection. The whole thing is on RUclips is you want to watch it on your own time Seb.
So glad you loved this one. Cheers!
16:59 I think this actor is Owen Wilson's brother (who actually is blonde)
If seb didn't recognise Velma im worried he hasn't seen the cinematic masterpieces that are the *scooby doo films*
The pure joy in his face makes me enjoy these movies so much more
the dvd box set of this and the sequel came with a feathery pen like in her first class.
My fav quote is “exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. And happy people just don’t shoot their husbands” lmao.
To have the opportunity to enjoy Seb reacting to that masterpiece is a joy 😂 happy times, as always 😂
it's my 24th bday today and i'm sick what a great pick-me-up after a nap!!
i'd also recommend wild child and st trinian's! two iconic 'chick flicks' based in england i grew up on them. also clueless is a classic!
@@Mark.H. thank you!!
1:20 that's the actress that played Mama Imelda in Coco
Fun fact: Elle was so smart and did so well on the LSAT tests, initially she needed at least a 175, but she got a 179, which is one point away from a perfect score that is 180.
Due to my Reese Witherspoon obsession, Legally Blonde is in my top 5 favorite movie list!!!
It's very accurate. The chutney is always hiding at the back of the fridge waiting to jump out at you.
But on another note - Why is Seb so beautifully handsome though??? 🥹 I feel like he is my best friend and he doesn’t even know it ❤️ 😂
I love your reactions and sooooo excited for you to see this one. I watched this the night before I took the LSATs back in the 2010s. Needed that Elle Woods energy! Please do Sweet Home Alabama soon!!!
I don’t know if it’s your thing. But you should react to Legally Blonde the musical! So many one liners turned into dope songs!
I love how most people watching the movie does not understand the point of the snap, like the understand the bend to draw the eyes to the butt but not the snap. Well the snap is to enunciate the chest, the arms push up the chest for extra attention and especially in person it would be a lot more noticeable and eye drawing.
I LOVE IT. You're video was so good.
Such a great movie ...I've watched it multiple times. 😁
Your reaction to the "Bend and Snap"...😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
One of my faves, I can see you are going to like it! It's so fun, but it also had a good message for me growing up
You are by far my favorite reacter. Never a disappointment.
You should watch “Clueless” next. It’s the mother of all these chic flicks. The original. So good.
LOVE CLUELESSSSS
I think you should see Clueless (1995), Blast From the Past (1999), Valley Girl (1983), Earth Girls Are Easy (1988).
Dude, I'm a guy and I love your take on this movie, your laughter is so on point!
I never got round to watching this, but I'm glad I watched it now, albeit condensed but extra entertaining because of the commentary :)
OMG Sebas, I am so happy you watch this, one of the funniest and my favorite. :)... you should see Legally Blonde 2
What I love about this movie is it has more substance than just a 'chick flick'. It depicts the hardship a woman needs to go through in society.
Strongly suggest watching The Proposal next!
Seb.. love this movie also and have watched it and Legally Blonde 2 multiple times! Jennifer Coolidge is a riot. Love her!
21:40 - so funny to see him say "bitch" in such an agressive yet adorable way! 😂
"How do you think I'd look as a blonde?" Is funny, because his brother is Owen Wilson, a famous blonde 😂❤
Oh, right, regarding the two college's referenced:
UCLA let them use the campus, but not the name. Harvard let them use the name but not the campus.
I have adored this whacky movie since it was first released! So happy you have found it too.
Elle's brunette friend(Selena) is Cassie and Lexi's mum (Suze) in Euphoria 😁
Hahaha I love the hair at the end! You would fit in with Poison the band!
I love your commentary and your vibes man 🖤
You're reactions are instant classics ✨
