    Useful words! In Spanish it means slow, "lento"(masculine), "lenta" (feminine). It'll help me remember it.

    I had a conversation with a guy from Finland a few months ago - it is fairly common to meet Finnish people in Sweden, and they often understand Swedish - and I spoke a few Finnish sentences in front of him, and he said that my pronunciation was very good, so that was nice to hear. I am very familiar with the general melody of Finnish, so I can pronounce it in a way that sounds reasonably natural.

    wow! so interesting how the words are combined!
    Also, I am curious about using "lentokenttä" - "airfield" usually means a military or a small airport which is used by amateur pilots on small airplanes, usually it doesn't have a building and an asphalt runway, there is a dirt runway and may be a hangar

    • @KatChatsFinnish

Have to go into Canada or to Alaska for those. Great Video, I don't think I'll forget what Lento means, I like Finnish because of the word-building aspect, and I'd like to be able to read some Finnish books that aren't in English, yet. I have seen a number of tähdenlentot but the most memorable was when I was at a liikennevalo.
    Several years ago I saw a shining green tähdenlento arcing downwards low over the horizon which disappeared behind the trees. I braced myself for a loud explosion but heard nothing. The next day the news reported that the tähdenlento was several hundred kilometers to the north from me. Many people saw the tähdenlento. It was not an omen. The world did not end, and no disaster came later.

Your favourite... Then the topic is like Shopping, so words will be like asking questions like "how much" or Buy/want to buy so and so forth... I still have problems with the minä puhun and me puhumme so if you can make sentence and diversify the sentence with 1st, 2st, 3rd person singular/plural it would be awesome... Seeing a shooting star in my neck of the woods is a fairly rare occurrence--but I'm so old, I've seen quite a few. Pronouncing "star" like "shtar" makes it sound like Kat is either trying to speak German or Gaelic. Does a balloon really fly? Or does it just float?

    • @KatChatsFinnish
      @KatChatsFinnish  2 года назад

      I guess in English it doesn't sound so good, but in Finnish you would use "ilmapallo lentää" but of course you could say "ilmapallo leiijuu" but it's not that commonly used

    • @elderscrollsswimmer4833
      @elderscrollsswimmer4833 Год назад

      @@KatChatsFinnish If it's filled with helium it could fly, other balloons too if it's windy. You may need some weight tied to the helium ball so it floats rather than flies. Ans speaking of leijua - leija (kite) lentää. Poika lennättää leijaa. Just another nice grammar feature there. Also, people speak like they're flying if they're taking a plane somewhere, even if they're just passengers. Well, coming with "loppui kuin kananlento" I suppose almost any kind of moving in the air tends to count as flying. Including ski jumpers. Staying still (tied up maybe) is floating. We had floating paperclips in physics class once.

    Sorry for the digression, but I find all this very interesting, so I have to: in Sweden we have a (hockey) general manager called Per Kenttä, and when you mentioned kenttä I felt it makes sense, because fält (Swedish for field) is also a not entirely uncommon last name to have in Swedish. For example, on the usual theme, there is a hockey player called Elias Fälth (where the extra h is just stylish, basically), who played a few years for my hometown team. In the old days, a few hundred years ago or so, Swedish soldiers where given "soldier names", some of which were associated to the places where the soldiers were stationed (other names were based on soldiers' attributes, battle, tools/weapons, or nature in general). This also in Finland, which was part of Sweden back then. Compare as an example with Runeberg's epos "Fänrik Ståls sägner" from around this time, in which we meet Sven Duva - duva is dove - and fänrik Stål himself - stål is steel. I guess Per's family could have gotten its name in this way, or just in Finnish directly. Kenttä himself is from the north, born in Umeå and raised in Haparanda, which is very close to Finland. Every day you learn something new! Thanks!
