    Tbh, I’ve always felt that the complaints about the crocodile mission in particular ignore the cartoony nature of this series. Sure, it has a few more mature scenes and themes, but at the end of the day, this is a series about cartoon animal people beating up bad guys in funny ways and stealing things.

    Maybe this episode would have been better if there was an actual boss in it. Maybe the leader of the miners who was corrupted by the Mask of Dark Earth. His back story could have been that he was once an archeologist who found many treasures. But when he took the Mask of Dark Earth, it corrupted him into think that he deserves to have all of the riches of his travels because he’s always giving these relics to a muesum. That could explain why the miners are destroying the entire Outback and give an actual reason as to why the Mask of Dark Earth is there.

    I think the biggest issue with Rumble Down Under is the amount of stressful missions that it has. It starts of rather chill; looking for the Guru, parkouring across the map, but then you just get introduced to one stressful mission after another.
    1. Escape with Guru's staff in a dark cave (TWICE), while getting swarmed by enemies AND you have a timer.
    2. Collect Scorpions with a new vehicle mechanic AND you have a timer.
    3. Protect Murray for what feels like forever with yet ANOTHER new vehicle mechanic, while you are getting swarmed by enemies.
    4. Feed enemies to a crocodile while you're also getting swarmed by said enemies.
    There's barely any stealth involved in this level at all, there's just destruction and mayhem.

    • @renkohikawa7893
      @renkohikawa7893 2 дня назад

      Late response but destruction and mayhem was sorta the goal of this episode, part of the goal was driving out the Mining Company that had forcibly set up shop to drill for opal, part of the Guru's conditions for joining the team was getting the miners out of his land.

    • @Rubycore
      @Rubycore 2 дня назад

      @@renkohikawa7893 Well that's kinda the wrong goal to set for yourself in a stealth game, isn't it?

  • @CptJack-ws8nz

    A lot of people complain about this chapter lacking a regular Villain like the other chapters but i think its a nice change of pace for once, i have seen people who suggested that the Miners should have had a Foreman/Overseer to serve as the Villain for the chapter but id honestly argue this Foreman/Overseer Villain wouldn't be that very interesting and argueably more boring than the Mask because as we can easily deduct both him and his workers are obviously tearing up the Australian Outback looking to get rich of mining for Opals.
    Having the Mask of Dark Earth present is more interesting cause then the Cooper Gang has to take care of both the Miners and the Mask instead of just one problem/villain as usual, Also the Mask of Dark Earth being there is a nice twist as it serves as the consequences of the Miners own actions as they simply dug too deep in an area where they shouldn't have been mining in the first place.
    I do agree that having the mask constantly escape any attempt at destroying it got boring/old quickly because we had no idea if we were damaging the Mask at all or if was possible to even damage the Mask in the first place and i do wish they developed the mask more with lore/information or maybe even vaguely a personality but mainly to have each encounter with the Mask be much more unique and interesting in a way.
    Personally i've always been curious just how much of the person is left or present when the Mask takes control over their mind and how much the Host of the Mask's original personality affects the Mask itself, Like how we saw the big possessed Dingo in Lemon Rage that was just jabbering nonsense meanwhile Carmelita when possessed was speaking english normally at first anyway, so like does the person's personality affect the Mask at all and also does it matter if the Host of the Mask is a strong minded individual or not.

    Very good video, but I will say that a lot of the jobs in Rumble Down Under also had to do with driving away the miners from the Guru's home, not just destroying the Mask. Feeding them to the crocodile was cruel and unusual and in the end did not destroy the Mask but it DID severely lower the morale of the miners, so I suppose it did still have a desired effect.

Like, yeah, these guards are plundering the environment to dig up opals and locked up the Guru, that's pretty dickish, but does that mean it warrants them straight-up death? Sheesh.

      @Notski Yeah you're right, but I also did not explicitly state anything in the manner you said. Vore and Giantess can be explicitly sexual yes but I was not stating that the game nor the writers directly depicted anything "pornographic". As you said, innuendo can be written and used for humor and comedy, but innuendo still implies a wink and nod even in regards to kink and fetish. The vore one was more of a joke on my part so I will defer that one for being a reach towards a punchline, but the giantess one has existed for a while since the 90s media that I grew up watching as a child on television and yeah it's innuendo that adults will understand more than kids but it's still something that can and has influenced people as they grow up and actually explore themes they've been exposed to.

    "We need to work on the Australian chapter but the pirate chapter has grown so large." - "eh just make it a spooky magic object, their recruiting a shamen so it fits." - "But wouldn't fighting a floating mask by itself be wierd?" - " just make it attach to enemies, have each section be a bunch of arenas with gimics with the designs we allready have done... you could even save more time by just having Carmelita be the chapter boss. Great video, Loot! You’re an inspiration to the Cooper Clan Community (the CCC)! But I’ve got to speak out in defense of this chapter. Not only does it have the lemonade chugging contest (which is always sure to make me roar with laughter), but it’s the first time that we see the Cooper gang take an interest in environmentalism and stand up against exploitative mining practices. I know this is a game and not real life (ahh, if only!) but it’s still nice to see that side of things being explored. And yes, although we do see Sly and co. ruthlessly murdering some poor working class dingoes, keep in mind that the Sly franchise began with murder - the senseless slaughter of Connor Cooper at the cruel, cold talons of Clockwerk. Maybe even honorable Sly is not immune to the cycle of violence. And I also really like the part where Carmelita gets huge, I don’t know. Anyway, great job again! 😃

      I’m afraid I must dissent my cooper comrade!
      I believe environmentalism was already covered sufficiently in Sly 2: band of thieves. Particularly in the “he who tames the iron horse” and “menace from the north eh” chapters. Jean Bison was a rugged and sexy villain who posed an actual threat, unlike the mask of dark earth. Or should I say, the mask of large girth (Carmelita’s big hips anyone?). While I appreciate the effort , the only moment of substance is the giant Carmelita (awoooo!!!!! I’d like to climb those boots!)
      No offense to you private, but I believe I rank higher in the cooper army!

The Grizz does exactly what he does only a million times better imo) that doesn’t mean we can’t ever have the gang touch on the environmental topic again.
      And hello? No cool, sexy villain? Carmelita IS the villain of the chapter. Unwitting, absolutely, and without one of the Sly Cooper series’ iconic villain introduction segments. But for the first time, Sly and Carmelita are put in actual dramatic conflict with one another, without any ‘will-they-won’t-they’ flirtatious fluff to get in the way.
      And how can you not give the lemonade drinking mission it’s due?? Like Loot said, the developers at Sucker Punch had so much faith in that mission that they used it as a demo to hype up the game! Pretty hard to argue that it isn’t a highlight of the entire game, maybe even the series.
      In conclusion, I think it’s a little early for you to be swinging around your Cooper cane. Maybe stick to mastering the ninja spire jump first hahaha I’m just kidding!! Hope I wasn’t too in your face, there 🥹

Rumble Down Under is my favorite chapter mostly because of the bar fight and how big the map is. Looking back though, didn't notice some of the "stuff" about the writing and jokes here. 2005 was a time that these choices and just fly by since most people were more "lenient" at the time.

    Valid thoughts though, Bently's descent into, uh lets call it cartoonish super villany I think is supposed to be a plot point but barely gets touched on until the end. And as for Rumble down under... The rush to get it out really changes that finale. I really think bently is supposed to be sarcastic/panicked there. And Sly's lack of a jaw dropped shock expression changes that whole shots tone for him. Which is funny.
    Then again Sly is a known thrill seeker and thinks Carmelita chasing him was fun flirting. A 50 foot vixen? He could totally be down for that sort of thing.

The mask being more of a primordial entity as oppose to a usual named boss was something i enjoyed. Granted i don't think i disliked any of the levels in the first 3 games. Can't speak for 4 since i haven't played it. Also killing enemies seems like an odd argument since it's not a new thing to the series but whatever. I will say hearing a level being infamous in sly does surprise me a bit but i never had much interaction with the sly community so I'd pretty in the dark i suppose. I will say the main thing that always threw me off a bit was that Carmelita never had a consistent voice. She's like the one reoccurring character that has a completely different va every game. It's always made me wonder why that was the case. Will say her sly 2 va is probably my favorite followed by 3.

    I guess the writers were trying to find a way to make it so that Carmelita would be the Level Boss, so they thought what better way than with some supernatural corruptive force/item, and I'm sure having it where the item makes it's user grow bigger & stronger would have been easier to work with then having to come up with some new designs where they like became a hideous monster, or got filled with super saiyan-like energy or something, and it seems like with the Hulk, anger only makes the effects get even stronger, I'll bet it would have been hard for Sly to fight her without trying to badly injure her like he would with any other level boss, especially when she first became somewhere between 10 to 15 feet tall, then 30 to 40 feet tall, and finally about 50 to 60 feet tall, still no excuse for all the not so hidden fetishes, guess that's why these games are rated "E-10", but I digress, maybe if a New Sly game eventually comes out it won't be so rushed & be better written.

    #1. 9:52 I don't really think this chapter is even THAT racist or have tropes that are semi-racist. [And I'm black, so I didn't got offended by it] You're basically overreacting and kinda making a mountain out of a mole hill. 😅☝
    #2. 7:19 Sly and the gang basically killed guards all the time, even in Sly 1 & 2. And I don't really think it's that out of character for them to do. Like in Sly 2, Muarry can pick up and throw enemies at laser security fences or Sly can knock them back into them and we see them burn and disintegrate and If you accidentally touch the lasers as either playing as Sly, Bentley or Muarry yourself they clearly get burned. And that mission where Muarry throws guards into the water pump and it exploded after the mission impling that those guards are dead. There were instances where you can knock or throw enemies into the water and they die or make them fall from high heights or bottomless pits [Especially in those 2 Contessa chapters "Jailbreak" & "A Tangled Web"] shoot them with an army tank, blow up explosive canisters next to them. The bad mojo mission has Bentley kill a whole bunch of The Contessa's guards with death traps, and not to mention all the guards that Bentley basically kills with his bombs he drops and we know they're not "non-lethal" bombs as we see Bentley's bombs are strong enough to blow up and destroy solid concrete, a whole bridge, security gates, and control boxes, support beams, not to mention he drops bombs on enemies from his RC helicopter missions, and in Sly 2 Chapter 3 "The Predator Awakes" the mission where Bentley takes control of a real helicopter & used the tail gun to shoot down and blow up multiple of Rajan's choppers as we hear Rajan on the intercom ordering his men piloting the choppers to defend the dam at all costs. And even Muarry shot down a defense chopper in Chapter 2. And let's not forget all the gun turret missions in Sly 1.

    I mean back then i never understood that and found it a little strange
    Fast forward to now i still find it strange, carmelita is still my furry crush (because well.. furry), and i at least understand certain aspects to it, not the full thing but i understand some of it
    Also bentley’s always been a bit of a domestic terrorist and a psychopath, he literally called Sly crazy for not leaving carmelita to die at the hands of clockwork in the first game
    I’m surprised he’s not more wanted than sly

    The first mission of sly 3 feels in my opinion the closest to sly 2, a passing of the guard from one style to another, after that each chapter feels more the games own style, which sets it apart from the other 2.

  • @ablade7689
    @ablade7689 4 месяца назад +1

    Yes, I always thought there was something off about this area. Missions were fun, the area was wide and had lots to offer but something was missing. Something about it that made it less engaging than the other locations. The antagonist of this chapter didn’t make much sense. A mask filled with dark magic in an australian desert setting, while the idea was good, I think it was a bit rushed. You didn’t feel satisfied for beating the villain of RDU, because it doesn’t make you hate it like Octavio or Contessa does for causing harm to members of Sly’s gang. It doesn’t speak, and it’s just a mask at the end of the day but that’s just me. For half of the chapter, you have to bring Guru his gear, and it could have ended right there, but to keep the chapter’s length equal to every other one they dragged it by making missions into the desert with the off road vehicles irrelevant to the story. I think it would have been nicer if this area got a little more development which would have increased the game’s lifespan. Still love it like the rest of the game though, interesting video!

    Honestly, if I were to rewrite the level, I’d get rid of the mask and have the villain be some rich asshole profiting off of the opal mines. It could be used to criticize colonization a bit more, especially since the level has a lot of themes around environmentalism. Almost like a Jean Bison type character

    this isn't in defense, as i agree sly 2 has the best the series offers, and really squeezes the most out of the game by focusing on the three titular characters, instead of watering things down or doing things with alternate characters that the main three could've done and have done before (case in point those drills the guru took out, bently or murray could've easily done that). Sly 2 REALLY nails the 'less is more' compared to sly 3. BUT, I need to poke some holes in your points here or there, not out of spite, but I understand the source material myself, and having someone to counter your own points can help improve presentation skills in the future, which can be good if you're looking to make this a career.
    1: the motivations behind the level's plot. You complain that things kinda just 'happen' here and that the level feels kind of undefined, with sentences like 'the miners are digging here for some reason', and with the lemonade bar not understanding WHY the mission happened in the first place with 'show the miners they were better than them, i guess?'. The miners are there, because the area is rich with a precious gem endemic to australia called opals, and they're tearing up these places so they can get filthy stinking rich. The problem with this is that they're digging in Wave Rock, and Ayers Rock... two extremely important Aboriginal sacred sites and national landmarks in australia. This implies the miners are doing this /illegally/, and that they are criminals... which tracks heavily with the sly series' lore of sly's family ripping off master criminals, as they are master thieves. Thus you have the Guru's motivation; these are aboriginal sacred sites, he's an aboriginal, he was tasked to protect the land and guard the mask, the mask of dark earth represents the corruption of nature, which aligns with the greed of the miners, and bam you have an unorthodox antagonist, and why the mask needs to be destroyed. The fact that Sly and the gang decide to help the Guru, even before he's agreed to join them, also harkens back to the established fact that, though thieves, sly, bently, and murray are still genuinely good people. As for the lemonade bar, the reason it gets sacked by the gang in the first place ties into bently's plan; demoralize the miners so they disperse and go home. Idk about you, but having worked outside in blue collar jobs similar to that, if everything i rely on at the end of my day to relax and unwind breaks down, i'm gonna wanna go work somewhere else.
    2: You complain about the lethal situations the guards find themselves in with the crocodile, and murray throwing them into its mouth... citing sly 2 as being far more 'knock-outy'... let me remind you, that the croc mission is almost exactly the same mission as the water pump one in sly 2, where murray is throwing guys into a water pump... which takes those poor rat guards, and sucks them into a vaccuum-pressurized system of water pipes, where you can hear them screaming as they drown and die. You conclude that bently is being uncharacteristically amoral by feeding guards to the croc, but recall it was bently's idea in the 2ed game to have murray clock a sub-pump's pipes with corpses. He's done it before, and by god, he'll do it again xD.
    3: .......... i can't really argue with the giant inspector fox part, you hit the nail on the head pretty well there xD ... AND the complaint that, despite the guru being an enemy of the mask, he had little to no role in defeating it, save for destroying the helicopter, which is disappointing.

    To be fair with the crocodile thing I don't really think it's out of character. While Sly and the gang are ultimately good people I don't think it's wrong to say they can be sorta morally dubious at points even in Sly 2 with things like the bear mission. Or heck even the art pieces around the map, theirs nothing to say these things are always owned by the villain nor is it ever brought up if the the art pieces have rightful owners. You essentially in a cartoonish way selling it on the black market. Granted the crocodile arguably is going way too far in that dubious direction but I don't think it can be denied that Sly and the gang can be genuinely dubious if the situation calls for it.

      Opera of Fear at least recaptures SOME essence of Paris from Sly 2, so I rated it a lot higher. Octavio was unnecessarily difficult for some reason TToTT

    I wouldn't say there was any real racism in the level; stereotypical, yes, but not racist. Many other regions are also rather stereotypical.
    Also, the Lemon Rage segment was mostly to drive them out by claiming the bar, a place for the enemies to relax, is Cooper Gang turf. They challenge the Cooper Gang to a contest in which group can drink lemonade the fastest; if the Gang win, the enemies clear out. The issue comes at Bentley's turn, who spills most of his lemonade. Claiming Bentley (and by extension, the Cooper Gang) cheated, the brawl ensures.

    • @LootVT
      @LootVT  4 месяца назад

      Oh I definitely understand! I feel like it toes the line between tropey and racism, but for when it came out I’m sure no one thought too hard about it. It’s, again, not the worst but you definitely pick up on it nowadays.
      And while I understand *why* we did Lemon Rage, it still feels rather out of character for a band of thieves to try and strut their stuff, especially when they aren’t allowed on the mining company’s turf. Murray’s driving missions in Sly 1 work because, presumably, none of the racers know that he’s a thief, so it works better there, and overall it works best for Murray to have those missions.
      Don’t get me wrong, Lemon Rage is a really, really good mission! It just feels so out of place for what the entire episode was meant to be!
