Amaram interlude is something that I now sorely wish we had, one or even two would have been amazing, after he's made highprince and then when he's on the verge of turning. Overall a brilliant book, I love Dalinar's journey so much
I don't hate the Amaram reveal because, to me, his "ends justify the means" schtick was always 100% cope. He didn't care about doing the right thing. He wanted the glory and renown that comes *from* doing the right thing. He told himself the end goal was noble to assuage his guilt and shirk responsibility for what he had done. From that lens, he was a good mark for Odium's "give me your pain" offer in the exact way that Moash was.
There is this one moment in the palace that was supposed to be dramatic. But was so dramatic that it warped around to be funny again. Kaladin standing there going " NOOOOOOOO!" Seeing all his new Friends jilling each other and than the King comes in with his child on his arms and swears the Oath and than get stabed by Moash all in like a few pages. 😂
I thought Amaram was a perfect "villain" in the first two books and his turn to moustache twirling cartoon villain in OB has always driven me crazy. It felt sloppy/rushed and causes me to forget all the amazing stuff that happens in this book. The stuff with Szeth at the end could also maybe fall into that sloppy/rushed category. (I know others have similar complaints about ROW, but I didn't have the same feelings with that book).
Totally agree! I’ve seen a lot of people rank it as their least favorite stormlight book so I’m glad there’s others out there who love it as much as I do
I didn't hate the Amaram ending as much as I did on my first read because it does flesh out how conflicted he really was over his actions. He truly hated himself for the things he did. But it would have been much better if instead of Amaran swallowing Yelig-nar it was somehow Aesudan instead, tying together the Kholinar plotline and fixing the fact that Aesudan's plot really goes nowhere.
I’m not understanding the Amaram gripes at all, isn’t it pretty solidly established that he’s completely full of crap and only rationalizes his lust for power and self serving actions with the lip service he throws out about doing the right thing even when it’s hard? He murdered Kaladin’s entire unit to conceal the theft of a Shardblade and intentionally kept Kaladin alive to sell into slavery as a broken and humiliated man as punishment for daring to be as great as Amaram sees himself. He was always a cartoonish bastard lol
Part 2 is one of my favourites! Getting through part 3-4 other than zeath was the hardest time I head reading these books. But, my favourite book OAT is a clash of kings. A book with a bunch of talking.😅
39:00 Would you be eager to speak to somebody about killing his or her relative? I wouldn't. Their awkward silence is stupid but realistic. 42:00 Dark path? He eliminated the incompetent guy. Housekeeping. I guess this is lacking a discussion on a higher level. The prior books were a prelude to a war, which began at the very end of Words of Radiance. Oathbringer, however, is unambiguously a book about a war.
I had a smiliar experience as Jofwu. The first third of this book went really slow for me. If I was less of a fan, I might not have finished. My least favorite part of Sanderson's writing But the Sanderlanche! That is still my favorite section of the Cosmere. On re-read, the first part wasn't as hard for me though.
Regarding the Diagram (and Stormlight spoilers up to Rhythm of War): The Diagram, I think, is more Cultivation's way of manipulating Taravangian than it is Smart Taravangian's plan. I guess we don't know exactly how Cultivation did what she did, but it's safe to say she foresaw things playing out similarly to how they actually did. So while I get that the Diagram kind of fall flat as a secret society I blame Cultivation for not wanting quite so many loose ends. Surely she has enough dangling anyway.
I feel like I'm the only one who likes oathbringer more than the first 2, it's the first real sanderlance, while 1/2 really just feel like one *long* book too me
Honestly I'm with you. Way of Kings is just an extended prologue for WoR. I think just maybe objectively WoR might be better. But I rated Oathbringer higher for so long. And hey I didn't reread WoR, so OB is still the king! -Eric

i know its cheesy and out of nowhere, but i will never not love szeth anime protag-ing his way through a thunderclast.

My favourite(aka the best) Brandy Sandy book!
So far....

39:45 also totally agree with Eric, that specific scene felt like Brandon doing the portals scene from Infinity War where all the superheroes meet up.

The Amaram turn was more believable than the Szeth one. Maybe a few more sections in Edgedancer could have cleared this up.

I'm glad I'm not alone in having Oathbringer as my least favorite Stormlight book
