Stunning grain!! Your creativity is well anticipated to see revealed in the finished piece of work. Always enjoy your voice over as it answers potential questions.
I thought I was fortunate to find a small thin slice of thuya at work, but this burl is something I could only dream of! The final images of this piece are stunning. The swirling grain on the wave form is so beautiful!
Thank you so much Ray 🙂 yes i had to deep dive into my pocket to get this blank. Quite a few source sell small blanks for a lot more affordable price. Check out woodwiseuk hardwood supply
Wow, That is a beauty! That was surprising to see how much oil was in the wood. (It reminded of peanut butter on the sand paper)That had to be tedious work. But the reward was this awesome price of art! I love the narration too.👍
David I love the grain in this burl and I really think the waves are awesome you really are fantastic at coming up with this idea. It really must of taken alot of time and bits of sandpaper. The bowl is magnificent the finish is brilliant and really brings the grain and markings and colour out of the wood. Thank you for another masterpiece David and a fab video. Xx
That is a gorgeous piece of burl! I love the way you carved it. The wavy rim is a wonderful design choice for that burl. Absolutely beautiful piece! Great job!
Wow what a heck of a lot of sanding and hard work you put into this stunning bowl - but boy was it all worth it, amazing piece! I also imagine it was a heck of a clean up job too - you must have the worlds best hoover!! 🤣🤩👍👀🥇
Thank you so much 🙂 Yeah sanding was fun for sure. And honestly after hours and hours sanding I still could have go for another few more hours to make it perfect but.. :)
Lovely grain 😁 doubt you could improve on it 😘 I love everything you do 💋 you have created such a wide variety of designs using such a wide variety of technics 🤩 FANTASTIC
The color (American spelling, I know) is marvelous. I also hate when the wood gunks up the sandpaper so quickly, but the beauty of the finished piece seems worth the effort for this type of wood, at least. 👏👏👍👍
Hello David. This is really an awesome piece. Thuya is really a great looking wood, so as yew. The stickiness of the sanding dust can probably be explained with the etheric oil that is contained in the wood, but I'm not 100% sure.
That looks like one BEAUTIFUL pain in the rear!?!😅 No seriously, I can understand why you won't use that wood again. But you did a FANTASTIC job saving it!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Yeah, in my experience as well, thuya is one of the most difficult woods to sand for just the reason you discovered: it is incredibly oily. But it sure smells good when you work with it, doesn't it? I'm surprised that you found that large of a burl block, as it is getting very expensive. It's oiliness can present a problem with certain oil-based polyurethane finishes in that they won't dry. Beautiful outcome!
How much does a blank slab like that cost in terms of availability and actual money cost I'm really curious as I'd gave a slab to a freind I'd had about 12 years and soaked it in oil and a had it waxed on the outside to seal it in , then passed it to a buddy ..sadly we fell out ,i never saw anything done with it. upsetting really... It was about half the depth but the around the same width ✌️ ☮️peace bro 🙏 💯

Very nice piece David. Love it.

It’s a lot of work and trouble with sawdust sticking... but frankly, what a beauty in the end!!!
This is beautiful, bravo.
Thanks so much 😊

Gorgeous bowl, David. I like Thuya burl but I only use it to make pens and other small items - helps cut down on the sanding mess,
I guess that is what I am go to do too in the future :)
I’d be nervous grinding on that, I’m sure that beautiful piece of wood isn’t cheap. Amazing job, love it 🤙

Thank you so much 🙂 Yes definitely oil as I checked moisture content and it was low enough so must be oily wood
That looks stunning. Hope the sawdust cleaned away ok after the whole turn... looks like it was stuck everywhere
Thank you 😀 Yeah the dust has been awful. First time I experienced this (similar when i was rough sawing timber into slabs and it was green/wet)
I’ve turned several Thuya Burl pieces and it’s very oily and sticks like this. But it sure is beautiful!
That looks like one BEAUTIFUL pain in the rear!?!😅 No seriously, I can understand why you won't use that wood again. But you did a FANTASTIC job saving it!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Thanks for the voice-over commentary! With 5 thumbs on each hand, I'm FAR from competency as any kind of wood-worker, so I'm most sappreciative!
Thank you so much 😀 my pleasure

Thank you so much 🙂 Yes it has an intensive smell for sure not something i fancy 😀 Not like walnut.. i love that smell
Caused by gum exudation, using a fan and heat gun together helps greatly
That is a very good tip thank you.
Where do you get your coins at? Thanks. Awesome bowl.
Check out Von Hanke branding on Etsy
Very interesting wood. What kind of wood did you say? I missed it.
It is a Thuya Burl
Do you dry you own wood? I'v been follower some time but i start just look your videos
No i don’t. I try to buy kiln dried wood of not i just season it myself. Maybe one day 😀
What lathe do you use?
Axminster AP406

THis was about £90 GBP so not very cheap for a woodturning blank.
Static
Also beautiful work
