It was revealed in the early episodes that Sophia had previously suffered a stroke, and that is the reason why she has no control over what she says out loud. That makes it funny, because she can't help say what she thinks 😅😅

I always believed that Sophia just used that as an excuse. Sure she had the stroke, and maybe had an issue for a bit, but in general, she's been faking so that she can get away with the insults.

Estelle Getty (Sophia Petrillo) was NOT the youngest. I heard this as a kid at the time and it seems that myth is still going. Rue McClanahan (Blanche Devereaux) was the youngest. McClanahan was 10-11 years younger than the other three. Getty was younger than Bea Arthur (Dorothy Zbornak), who played her daughter. Betty White (Rose Nylund) was the oldest and slightly older than Arthur.. Sophia was only the mother of Dorothy, not the other two. Blanche was the owner of the house and the others rented rooms from her. They all grew into close friends. Sophia had suffered a stroke, which damaged the part of her brain that governs control, which is why she said whatever popped into her head.

GG litteraly made insults into an art form - incredibly inventive and hilarious but this is just one side of the show. They tackled problems in the show that were unheard of at than time in TV with great realism and sensitivity and they brand mark humor like homosexuality, memopause, losing a child.... big and small problems of older people and women especially - how they got some of this episodes past the censorship of the time is a mystery. It is funny as hell but at the same time it very often hits you hard. That is what makes it absolutely timeless.

My mum was in her 80s when she had a stroke. She was being looked after in hospital by a handsome male nurse. When I went to visit her, she told me in a really loud voice how nice the nurse was. She'd forgotten his name, so kept referring to him as "the queer nurse". I was horrified. The stroke seemed to take away her filter. She didn't mean to be offensive. Old people eh? 🤔😀

I pee regularly at 7am, like clockwork! My only problem is I don’t wake up until 8am! She truly had the best lines of the whole cast! Plus, the days of real humor are gone. You want to find funny offensive sitcoms, check out "All In the Family" or "The Jeffersons". You'd love clips from those shows, especially the lead character in the first one, Archie Bunker. They were hits in the 70's . Or even "Sanford and Son". I think I saw you react to Sanford on the Office Blokes once.
Speaking of the Blokes, I have a story for you. My daughter and I went out to eat a few days ago, here in Kentucky. We knew our server wasn't American but she was so soft spoken that it was difficult (for me) to figure out from where she may be and I'm usually very good at accents. I thought she might've had a speech impediment because she was so very soft spoken and seemed a little shy too. My daughter nailed it immediately, saying "She's British Mommm!" When we were settling the check, I politely asked her if she was British. Her eyes lit up, she grinned and said yes. I went through the whole spiel that Brits say they hear all the time about Americans loving to hear them talk for hours. I told her I follow several Brits on here. She asked who and of course, put on the spot, I drew a complete blank. I told her the OB's and she said she had never heard of you guys. (Sorry! Don't shoot the messenger! 😂). She asked who else and the Beasleys were the only other name that popped in my head. Her eyes lit up again and she knew all about their channel. To be fair though, she was quite young, around their ages. She was one of the most genuinely soft, humble, sweet, pleasant people I've encountered in awhile. Totally unlike the Blokes! Just kidding about the Blokes but she was definitely all of those things. She got a good tip. I didn't ask but I'm assuming she may be a student at the local university, given her apparent age. So I just thought I'd share that and maybe she'll check out your channels now. 😊

You should watch a few full episodes. Maybe not on RUclips, but just to enjoy.
People forget that these shows were episodic. It's not like Breaking Bad where watching it becomes a 50-hour commitment.
Once you know the premise of the show, you can just pluck any random episode and enjoy it.
Something TV sorely needs back, in my opinion. I think that's part of the reason shows like thid are so big on streaming.
Our entertainment is too bloated. Our movies are part of these cinematoc universes with a dozen or more films, TV shows are these serialized, padded slogs, video games are front-loaded with hours of tutorials and hand-holding.
And it makes them all way more expensive to make, and bloats the production time. And they become more risk-averse because a lot more money is on the line.
But sitcoms were _cheap!_ the biggest expense was usually cast member salaries. But that was more for shows that are already huge hits so the cast members have the clout to ask for more, and because the show is profitable enough to afford it.
