Your video explained it simple enough to not freak me out that I was going to break something. I just got don’t vacuuming the pool in record time & backwashed until the water came out clear. One thing I learned about clearing the air out of the vacuum hose is to place the end not attached to the head over a jet/nozzle. It forces all the air out pretty quickly.

Thank you so very much for this video. My husband is the one taking care of the pool. But he is away for a month. We had 16 inches of rain in Fl in the middle of June. And pool went downhill since then. I liaised with the pool shop that I have my water readings from and they have provided the correct chemicals. But the rain continues and the problem is still there. I do have a vacuum for the pool but the instructions from my husband were not clear. So I stumbled in my search on your vlog and !Voila! I understood it right away. What a great video, I have been looking at a few different ones as I have never vac'ed my pool before. I need to remove dead algae off the bottom. I wish you would've focused in more, zoomed in more when it came to plugging your vacuum hose into the skimmer.
Fill hose like he showed. While end of hose with basket plate on it is under water and your right next to skimmer, cover hole in plate with palm of hand and quickly pull hose and basket cover out of water and into skimmer from top. I place something heavy like a gallon of muriatic acid on hose at skimmer opening to hold it under water level then go turn pump on. Start vacuuming. Works for me.

Good info. I just use a skimmer sock and it catches most debris. That way I don't drain the pool by vacuuming to waste or having to backwash after vacuuming.

What a difference a couple of hours make... Wish I saw this about 3 hours ago when I vacuumed my newly plastered pool. Backwashed for almost 5 mins, rinsed for 2 mins and still got debris in pool when filter restarted. Thanks, I know what to do now.

Thanks a lot for your sharing.What I wanna know is what's gonna happen if we put the valve in filter position instead of waste when vacuuming.
In filter position it Vacuums the same only difference is your filter collecting the debris instead of getting rid of it altogether out the waste line. The only reason we vacuum to waste is when the debris on the bottom of the pool is to small for the filter to take out or were just trying to get rid of some gross muck that we dont want in our filter.

I’ve had my above ground pool for 10 years and never used this setting. Until today. I had dust and dirt accumulation on pool floor. At first I thought it was algae. I bought chemicals, replaced the sand, checked the spider gasket, etc. Nothing worked. I finally tried the waste selector and bam, the suction is twice and strong as when you vacuum through the filter. It’s amazing. Make sure your pool water level is high because the water leaves the pool fast. I had my garden hose running into the pool while I was vacuuming. My pool appears to be clean now. I’m going to check it in a few hours.

I use these like pantyhose in my skimmer and it catches all the little bitty items. They actually sell them in Amazon. I did use my pantyhose for awhile. It catches so much. There called micro filter bags

Looking for this video in the last year . I am doing everything in the house. Cooking, cleaning the pool is an extra homework that I m not taking ligthly. Did you build the Cabano yourself to keep the pompe safe? Wish I can do that. Every day I look between my legs see if I am growing some. Because my hubby does not do any kind of exterior jobs what so ever. But he is a good dad. Do some other things. So yeah thank you for any kind of help or teaching.

This video is helpful, however, my sand filter does not have a waste mode. Only has backwash, rinse, filter and winter. I have a white milky residue sitting on the bottom of my pool and it turns cloudy if it gets stirred up. Do I set it to backwash as I am vacuuming since I don't have a waste mode?
Hi Brittany if you don't have a waste mode on your filter you will have to vacuum in filter mode. Definitely do not vacuum in backwash mode this is only used for cleaning your filter. If you find yourself vacuuming and alot of that residue is coming through the filter and returning to the pool from the return jets you can also try a filter aid product that you dump down the skimmer to help the sand in your filter catch the really fine residue your vacuuming up. I use Biogaurd sparkle up. When using this product make sure you watch the pressure on your filter while vacuuming because it will raise 10 pounds fairly quickly with this product. You might have to backwash and repeat the process with the filter aid depending on the size and how much gunk your vacuuming up in your pool.

Your welcome and yes just run the hose through the skimmer opening on the pool wall and attach it to the suction hole in the bottom of your skimmer housing.

This video is excellent and very helpful, but would a rechargeable pool vacuum on a telescoping pole work well with this type of fine dirt? Just asking because I'm disabled and trying to hook up the hose and use the pool vacuum to waste is a bit more than I can manage. I use a heavy robotic cleaner for big cleaning every few days, but this fine dirt keeps coming back.
Hello Patricia, unfortunately the rechargeable pool vacuum don't do a sufficient job on the really fine stuff but you could always give it a try to see if it helps.

I've just taken over a pool and just wondered if you would know how long it would take very approximately from your experience to do backwash to waste a pool 32ft x 16ft x 3ft 7in deep (average over length)? Totally depends on the size of your pump and water flow meaning gallons per minute.

Much better and easier option: A Robot cleaner e.g. Dolphin E10. Saves much time, energy and is stand alone, no hoses needed.

Yea but it’s advised not to use a robot until you’ve got the chemicals balanced. Often you have to flock and vacuum before you are able to use it without damaging such an expensive item. And, if you’ve flocked a green pool, you’re going to have to constantly clean the screens and bag on the robot, besides it not being good for the device until the balance is in better condition.
When you vacuum to waste does it bypass the skimmer basket or no? I’ve done it before for the small particles but it’s pretty dirty from this winter in PA. Will the larger things like leaves go to the basket when using the waste option? Thanks! Great video😊
They do make vacuum attachments that go over your skimmer basket called skim-van's with allows you to vacuum to waste but the larger debris get caught in the skimmer basket preventing your lines from getting clogged. If you decide to directly insert your vacuum down the skimmer to the suction line just be careful not to suck up to much at one time and clean your pump basket regularly.

Yes unless you have valves that can turn off the drain on the suction side to put total suction on the skimmer for more power to the vacuum head

Hi Rita thanks for watching our video! Glad we could help. When your finished vacuuming to waste you will turn off the pump then pull your vacuum hose from the skimmer and you should definitely empty the basket also that's in your pump it's probably filthy also once you get your pump lid back on Then switch the multiport valve back to the filter position and your ready to start your pump again.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm a newbie in pool ownership, so I'm learning a lot over the past year. I didn't cover my pool this winter, and the water stayed blue (always able to see the bottom) with only spotty cloudiness that I know is algae. I've put a Pool Rx in the filter basket about a week ago, but still have that in patches in the bottom, along with some debris from a storm. Do you suggest flocc for pollen THEN vacuum to waste, or is pollen going to be eventually dissolved by the pump system?
Hi Brenda, the filter should clean the pollen out for you after a couple of days if not you can try a pool Clarifier product. If your getting the same fluffy debris collecting on the bottom of your pool every 24 hrs after stirring up the water by use or vacuuming, this debris should be vacuumed to waste and is most likely making it through your filter.
Just opened my pool and I have a lot of leaves on the bottom. Should I vacuum it in waste? This is my first time doing it myself
I would definitely try to get most of the leaves out with a net first. Heavy leaves and debris could clog a line if your pumps suction isn't sufficient to pull it through the lines.
Search for "Leaf Vacuum" or "leaf master" it's amazing! You connect a hose to it and it will get all the leaf out in minutes. It doesn't use your pool pump and won't clog anything

Yes, this is exactly what I did with my pool. What I am confused about was after I got all the gunk vacuumed on waste, I shut off the pump and set it back to filter. As soon as it did, bright green water started flowing into the pool via return jets ... So I shut it off as soon as I could. I put it on backwash and saw the green wash out during the backwash.
But I had the filter on waste as I vacuumed everything. Clearly it didn't bypass the filter ? I'm lost lol
Perhaps there was still dirty water in the suction line when you shifted to filter?

I have vacuumed with the water below the skimmer but once you suck enough air to lose prime on your pump it's time to stop and fill the pool again
Can you show exactly where and how you place the end of the hose in the skimmer when you're about to decrease the water level in the pool on waste so I don't lose suction. Thank you.
Honestly you can never get an air tight suction through hooking a vacuum hose to the skimmer so we always need the water level to be higher then the bottom of the opening of the skimmer. Fill the pool higher than normal before vacuuming and fill the pool while vacuuming. This will give you a bit more time
@@Poolelementary I have to reduce my pool water by 1 foot as I have high cyanuric acid. I then have to replace the 1 foot of water with fresh water. Do I remove the basket in the skimmer and just shove the hose in it
Yes you can remove the basket and put a hose directly to the suction in the skimmer but most of the time as soon as the water level gets below the skimmer you lose prime on your pump. Normally when draining a pool this low we plug off the skimmer or shut the valve to the skimmer and drain it off the main drain only. If you don't have a drain line on your pool I would suggest using a sump pump to drain it once you reach the bottom of your skimmer.
Good day! I have a problem with "Waste" mode. No water is going out the back wash. The pump simply loses some water and the vacuum doesn't suck anything. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. My water level is high as well.
Does everything work properly when the multi part valve is in the normal filter position?
When I return it to filter position, I needed to refill the pump with water or else there will be no water coming out the jet or sucking on vacuum
If it does make sure there isn't a valve closed on the Backwash line. No valve closed then you might need to check your multiport gasket

It also sounds like you have an air leak on the suction side of your pump if your having to prime it every time you shut the system down. Hard to diagnose over messages but good luck hope you figure it out.
My secret to allowing the small stuff to be caught by the sand filter is to use cellulose fiber. backwash less frequently. Cellulose fiber filters down to 2 microns, is non-abrasive, non toxic, and biodegradable.
What is the cellulose fiber brand name?
Could we use this technique to empty pool for winterizing ?
Yes you can but in order to drain it down past the skimmer you need to pull the water from the bottom drain of the pool so you have to shut the valve off to the skimmer or place a winterizing plug in the skimmer to shut it down. It's annoying when vaccum to waste having the shut off the pump periodically and cleaning the pump filter basket if there is a lot of debris. Any solutions to this other than a top plate over your skimmer Inlet ?
Also if vaccum to waste by passes the filter why would your pressure meter increase as if it were needed to get backwashed ?
There isn't much more we can do besides the skimmer plate. If you notice your pressure gauge going up on your filter when vacuuming to Waste you might have a bad multiport gasket.
I don't have vacuum though l keep sweeping the algae toward the deep end where the filter is at then switch to waste.maybe that will help.
If you sweep often the filter will take out alot of it out but eventually i would touch up with a vacuum. I don't think putting it on waste will benefit to much unless what your sweeping can be directed to the drain without fluffing most of it up into the water.
How can we vacuum Algae remnants if the multiport valve doesn't have a Waste setting?

I did this with my new Intex sand filter pump and the next day the dust was right back in my pool

Yes should be good to vacuum.

I always just leave it hooked up and just roll it up so it's out of the way.

Hello Jor Bar it is very unusual to be able to vacuum to waste with out the multiport valve and sand filter having this feature. I'm sorry but it just might not be something you can do.
Thank you for responding so quickly, I have waste line that I use to lower the water level when a hurricane is coming, there's no way I can close the other lines and open the waste line?
My pool was dark green. I shocked it, added chlorine and a small amount of clarifier and ot turned a teal color. It didn't clear so I took a sample to my local pool store where I was told I basically wasted a bunch of money. They sold me some soda ash and conditioner to mix with water and poured into skimmer. But I absolutely have to make sure all the leaves are out of the pool. I wrote all this to say I can t see the bottom of the pool so can I just start adding the chemicals that I bought Can I add a little more clarifier and maybe the pool will clear a little more? I've sunk so much money into the pool I'm afraid of putting stuff in the pool. Im guessing the pool wont clear until its balanced? I have a million questions and the more I research the more I get confused😔
Important things first. Balancing the pool is most important unless your planning on doing a partial drain I would balance the pool first. Then since the pool is cloudy I would make sure the free chlorine levels are atleast 3 parts per million until the pool is clear. Now comes the cloudiness and leaves. Obviously you can only clear the leaves that you can see effectively so definitely get what leaves you can out with a net or vac. This will save you some money on chlorine and ph increaser being leaves eat up chlorine and are generally acidic. The cloudiness you have two options either filter it out over time using your filter and clarifiers .they do make a filter aid product that you mix with water and put down the skimmer to help filters get the really small particles out of the water quicker. The other option is flocculant. This product makes the cloudy particles settle to the bottom of the pool and then you vacuum them out to waste.hope this helps it's just hard to help when I don't know your pool or pool equipment.
I was/still kinda am in your position. I was spending a lot of money with little results. To add to the frustration I didn’t know what I was doing and having a hard time gaining any useful knowledge. I can say this- I’ve had best results shocking the pool once a week with 2 bags of the shock that cost $6-7 a bag. Another great option especially in the beginning is use baking soda-it should be in with the other pool supplies. Between these weekly treatments I’ll add liquid chlorine every 2-3,days, water clarity every 2-3 days, and always have a chlorine tablet floating in a dispenser. I’m sure that I’m not following the conventional process but to this point this has yielded the best results on a consistent basis

My prob is, the second I put the pole into the pool, it immediately floats up how does yours stay put until you can prime the hose?
The filter has a few modes. Do I turn to “Waste” or “Backwash” mode, to vacuum the fine silt at the bottom of the pool ? Really appreciate your guidance. Thanks

Hi Ken, you can turn your pump off for a bit to see if you get more debris to settle but most should already be on the bottom. The filter will take out whats suspended in the water and if it doesn't try a clarifier or flocculant. I have a full video on how to use a flocculant in my green to clean video!
Please my pool is not vacuuming when I fix the hose to the skimmer it stops pumping the water to the sand filter what do I do please
Sand filter is dirty you have to backwash it.
How can you do this in a large scale pool. Can't keep enough water in pool to keep pumps going.
Normally on bigger commercial size pools I will only use the pump that is running the skimmer that i am using and I also will over fill the pool almost to the top of the skimmer if I have a Large volume of vacuuming to do. If this does not work for you then you might want to look into a portable vacuum system with separate pump and cartridge filter which work pretty good on getting the small stuff out of the pool also.
Can i drain my pool with vacuum to waste through the skimmer. Im not sure my drain valve works
Yes if you can get your vacuum hose to not suck to much air once the water level is below the skimmer.
@@Poolelementary thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to buy a sump pump for draining pool. Perhaps I can do the water to waste for the jazcuzzi first, then drain deep water until water level gets close to skimmer level, turn off, then use sump pump?
Why would you leave the filter basket in, if you’re vacuuming to waste? Defeats the purpose if the debris is just going to still get caught in the basket, no?
You don't want leaves and other things such as small rocks to be clogging or beating up the impeller of the pump.
@@Poolelementary You could even end up with a clogged skimmer line. What I usually do is get rid of most of the debris like leaves with a net that I use for scraping the bottom.

hello sir. I just opened my pool a few days ago- the water looked really nice- a nice blueish color and looked clean. But let me tell you how I have maintained my pool the last 15 years or so. I use a product called GREENOUT(Once a week)- a super chlorinator shock powder and floating stabilized chlorine tablets all the time. I know what you are thinking- and yes my CYA levels are or were over 175. YET my pool was crystal clear- it really was and no one ever complained about irritation etc. So all was good???Until i went on one of these pool forums and they recommended that I drain the pool a bit an NOT to use TEST STRIPS- because they are not accurate? So i drained 12 inches from the pol- after brushing and cleaning and backwashing. BUT I now use LIQUID CHLORINE so as NOT to keep adding CYA to my water. My level dropped to about 100- that is good enough for me- I am frustrated and nervous the last few days. Because AFTER I drained the ;pool, and refilled it with filtered hose water- my pool NOW has a green hue to it-- I have not had this color forever. With all my supposed wrong way of keeping the pool maintained- I followed others instructions and NOW I have a green tint. I am going to add more liquid chlorine and see if it turns any more blue? I also purchased this test kit- TF100- and I am going to start testing this weekend. But what do I do now- why was my water so clean and delicious all those years and NOW??? I am a novice really- if things are right and work- I am great - when they fall apart- I fall apart-- I am so upset and really do not want to screw things up anymore than they already are. What was so bad about what i was doing all those years? Please let me hear your advice. Much appreciated.
Hi, what you should realize is the ratio between CYA and free chlorine. So with a high CYA value you need much higher free chlorine to be able to kill algae. The free chlorine level should be at least 5% of your CYA value, preferably 7.5%. CYA is needed in order to protect your chlorine level not to break down because of UV radiation. But with as low as 20 to 30 you already accomplish this and then you only need a free chlorine level of about 2. That is a lot easier to accomplish and you save a lotof money on chemicals.
Is backwash the same as waste? My filter doesn’t have waste but it does have backwash
No backwash is different than waste. Some filters might use drain instead of waste.

Does the hose not have to be filled with water? Or was it already filled when you started feeding it into the pool?
As I fed the hose into the water it filled the hose with water so yes you do need to fill the hose with water first
@Poolelementary thanks for confirming. I have a vac port in the pool wall, but I have NEVER used it. I always fill hose and vac through skimmer, with the round head attachment.

Can you backwash a pool without the pump basket to avoid having to stop to clean it when the pressure goes down?
You should always keep your pump basket in to prevent any large debris from getting in your filter especially when backwashing. The debris will clog your laterals or screens in the bottom of the filter and you don't want to take all the sand out of the filter to clean these out it's a chore.
What about when you use the waste setting?
Remember your pump has an impeller that draws the water and leaves and debris being pulled into the pump with out the basket can clog the impeller than its a full breakdown of the pump to clean that out. Better to just empty the basket a few times.
