  • Here I threw together a video explaining how I made my belt squat and I share some ideas for improvement. Please feel free to comment with any suggestions.
    Belt Squat Dimensions
-Main beam 5'3" (made of a 4x4 and two 2x6)
-Notch is 3" from the back; 2" deep, 1 5/8" wide
-Eyebolt is positioned as low as possible, centered
-ROM notch is 2" along the last 7" of main beam
-Weight stack is positioned 20" from end of main beam but I would recommend 16-18"
-12" pipe (1.25" diameter) used for weight stack
Kick stand (will vary by your height, I am 5'10")
    2x13" ground supports (2x4)
    2x14" legs (2x4)
Two 3.5" 4x4 scraps for middle supports
    9 3/4" Bottom back support (2x4)
    9.25" top (2x6)
    3ft dowel (3/4" diameter)

Good work. When I had no money I made weight training equipment out of wood. Wood can support a lot of weight.

So I’m guessing that you don’t have a viking press and landmine attachment

Awesome! You're using pretty heavy weight here, does the belt chains bruise the inner thighs ?

Nope, I'm using the spud Inc belt and it is comfortable.

The problem with most belt squat systems, commercial or otherwise, is the relative balance of the free end of the swinging mast compred to its anchoraged point. The maximum distance between the highest and the lowest point of the squat in relation to the anchored mast should be as equal as possible {(high - low / 2) = anchorared point... as close as zreo a spossible}. If when in full extention of the squat you are 10 inch above the anchored point of the mast then you should also be at 10 inch below the anchored point of the mast when at the lowest point of the squat. This prevents unalligned with gravity forces to affect your knees inadvertantly. In your video, you start several inches below the anchorage point of the mast. Things increasingly get worst as you get at the bottom of the squat. Your knees will never forgive you.

I want as much of the weight as possible. Stress on the knees is not to be feared my friend. Ease into any stress and your body adapts and strengthens.
