For sure! It’s up there with any of the great shows where the hero/anti-hero flies too close to the sun for one reason or another and by the time realization kicks in, it’s too late for them.
Incredible show all around. The first 10 minutes of S1 E1 is the greatest TV series intro ever. Phil & Liz executed their orders brilliantly, but in a world full of chess pieces and chess players… they were always the only 2 Grandmasters who “handled” EVERYONE!
I like to know or I think it would be a good Idea to do a Russian Version of this Show called The Russians. It would be about Deep Cover CIA agents posing as Soviet Citizens (maybe Russian Citizens in the Post Soviet Era) living in Russia. I think it would be a great show.
With great love stories there’s always a moment where the proposal of running away together is an option. It’s 9 outta 10 times when they don’t, the end is coming. God I wanted them to have it all.
I loved the first season because Phillip is shown being really doubtful about being a spy for the soviets. He has grown comfortable with his american lifestyle. That gave us a nice tension with Elizabeth (who is a fanatic, let's keep it real). The producers eventually made Phillip's doubt fade away and the character lost a bit of interest to me. Still, an awesome show
His doubt never faded away at all. He always wanted to be done with spying since the very first episode. The last episode of season 5 confirms this. Elizabeth realized he had only stayed all those years because he loved her. He only stayed because he loved Elizabeth. I mean really loved her. His decision to go to Chicago and help her that one time reflects all his decisions he's ever made. He does it out of love for Elizabeth.
Philip's doubt doesn't fade away, though he is no longer looking to outright *defect* after this because he winds up killing the defector they had in their hands (who would have served as a bargaining chip for them to successfully defect with a financial reward and protection) in a vengeful rage when he learns said defector once raped Elizabeth. He continues to want out of the spy work, doubt the justification of his cause/government, etc., though he feels trapped into it and goes back because of his love and loyalty toward Elizabeth (who is thoroughly committed to the Soviet cause). He actually does semi-retire at the end of Season 5, and late in Season 6 he tries to talk Elizabeth into just coming home rather than carrying out a mission she is unlikely to survive, then comes to help her after she refuses that proposition.
A lot of Socialist movements America were countered or co-opted by the establishment. The Mccarthy era basically exposed how willing Liberals are willing to go along with fascist tendencies on the right to preserve capitalism.

"To know that it was all a lie? They would never speak to us again Philip"
Well, it kinda turned out that way in the end regardless...
It feels like the same exact show even 6 years later. They had it figured out from the very beginning.
The pilot was somewhat parallel to last episode. Ugh I love this show.
Elizabeth took forever to see the real score. Philip pretty much knew all along. And they lost the kids in the end.
I thought they should have defected. They lost both of their kids in the end, exactly what Phillip was trying to avoid. I loved this show

Spoilers
And the Soviet union fell a couple of year later anyway, so all that was in vain

True story: they cast Rhys as Philip because he took that slap from Elizabeth without flinching.
It's a pleasure to watch their acting in dialogue🏴🇺🇲🕶🕶
Keri Russell has to be the hottest Soviet spy ever.
Rhys isnt too shabby either :)
Funny that Elizabeth is the one saying they should never tell the kids....
Once Elizabeth slapped Phiip, you knew where this was going. And you also could see how cold Elizabeth really was.

They should have.
Now that they returned. Its all for nothing. No meaning

Why is Phillip so hot here?
Because Matthew Rhys is hot.
Bringing up treason and defection as you literally have a defector trapped in the trunk of your car.
Not a great timing for that conversation, lmao
1:18 “I care about everything”
"This place never churns out socialist" man its a different time
I thought that too.. and this was only what-6 or 7 years ago?
@@merkitten953 uhhh the cold war was quite some time ago mate
@@candysays100 i'm talking about when the show was written, not the era it was set in. Mate.
Now they're praising it and saying it's democratic socialism, like it's a cool thing
Should have said never churns out successful socialists.....only flashes in the pan.

He puts his family (Elizabeth) first. Consistently
Philip always wanted out, u don't know what are you talking about.

They actually get Paige "turned" to the cause.

Boy did they miss the nail on that one
We must serve Russia.
