Written for his sweet, beautiful little son, Connor, who died so tragically and senselessly in a fall. Eric had just begun to spend more time with this sweet baby when the unimaginable happened. As a matter of fact, he arrived at the apartment only minutes after the fall as he and Connor were going to spend that day together. This was just inconceivable that they didn’t take the child out of the apartment until the maintenance man was through with the window, how and why he took the entire window out still boggles the mind! Connor’s mom said the little one was used to running out on their balcony when they were in England, and he wasn’t that familiar with the apartment. It was a friend’s place, I think. It just happened in a split second before anyone was really aware or could stop it. So sad!

I think maybe the background information about the meaning behind this song should have been given with the suggestion to react to it, because this is definitely a song where that is needed to understand exactly what you are listening to. Not the reactors fault that they didn't know the story behind it, but rather the one making the request should have been able to see that them not knowing could lead to awkward commentary that might not be ideal when you are reacting to a song about the tragic death of a four year old child, and the parent trying to deal with the grief of loosing the most beloved and precious person in their life. So yeah... if you are making requests of similar songs please offer up the needed background information so you have prepared them for exactly what kind of song/story they are going into, because it isn't really fair to them not to prepare them properly.

    • @teatimedrinker1
      @teatimedrinker1 2 года назад +7

I completely agree with you. I mean I know that Shawn and Mel’s reactions are true/real and they really love learning about the songs from past decades- but I do feel when people refer quest specific songs that really need the background known about them, then I think it should be given. Because in this case, they’re seeing the film which this movie was part of the soundtrack for and so that’s gonna stick in their mind. They really don’t have any other ideas. And they did understand that this was a song about the other ones pains that they were going through in relation to that story, but I think sometimes it is nice to give a little bit of the background.
So right, I think smart ass comments are not appropriate in the cases of reactors because they don’t know most of what we know about the songs. As one they didn’t grow up with them, and two they hadn’t heard them before right? I mean be smart.
      ♥️🤗

Tears in Heaven is a song by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings, about the death of Clapton's four-year-old son, Conor, in March, 1991. It appeared on the soundtrack of the film, Rush, later that year. That's where the movie clips are from in the video. In January 1992, Clapton performed the song in front of an audience at Bray Studios, Berkshire, England for MTV Unplugged, with the recording appearing on his Unplugged album. The song was a huge hit & won three Grammy Awards---Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Tears in Heaven 362nd on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

What makes this song even sadder is that Eric Clapton, when he found out he was to be a father, did not want to have a child with the woman he'd gotten pregnant. He was tormented by the pregnancy and the child's existence. At first, he didn't give the child any of his time and he felt angry at the woman. With time he made the decision not to blame the child for his and the woman's mistake and he reached out to try and make amends. He had ONLY just started to build a relationship with the boy. This was one of his first father-son visitations where the boy was getting comfortable with his father. He went to pick him that day and, unfortunately, fate stepped in and Eric never got a chance to make up for not being there for his only child. He was literally DESTROYED by his decision not to be there for his son. The decision to walk away from the baby cost him dearly. You can't ever go back once the person is gone. A very sad lesson. Be kind to your loved ones everybody. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

I'm overcome by tears. The love of my life died unexpectedly in my arms three years ago. My doctor stated in my chart that I have Chronic PTSD..
Please don't walk down the aisle to this song. Don't open your marriage to pain. It's a fearful thing to love what death can touch.

Yes, this song is beautiful! It was for his 3 yr old son who passed. It was also on the soundtrack of the movie that was playing in the video. The movie was called Rush starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jason Patric. It was a really good film!💖💖

A tragic but beautiful song dedicated to his son who died in a tragic accident falling out of a high-rise window and for years he felt the guilt and this song that he wrote and played was what eventually healed him as much as can be expected from such an event.

Very sad song but even safer when it’s about a 3-year ole baby boy that dies. His boy fall out a open window that was lift open by a window cleaner. Eric even lift the U.S after this and went to a island to get away to him self and when he came back he had that song. It was a real bad time for him but as you hear him say in the song that he must go on and he can’t stay in haven witch that is where his son is. Love to both of you from Seattle WA.

When this song came out, my son’s biological dad was doing and dealing drugs. He had a heart attack. We at the time weren’t together but still were close. I remember sitting at his bedside listening to this. I didn’t think I would stop crying. My son was 2.

BTW, Will Jennings, who co-wrote this song with Eric Clapton, also co-wrote "Up where we belong ( from the movie "An officer and a gentleman" ) and "My heart will go on" ( Titanic ) and dozens more great songs.

This song to his son Connor is so heartfelt. So amazing considering the pain of loss, of a 5 year old so tragically. That instead of falling back into addiction he wrote one of his most beautiful songs.

Mel when you said a wedding song, I thought ok let's wait until the song turns and you realize it's not. He wrote this song and the death of his son. Very emotional tune, he sings it totally from his heart. Great reaction!

Mel- Tears in Heaven" is a ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother's friend, on March 20, 1991. 😢

The 1991 movie "Rush" is about two undercover cops deep into the life. It is a very good movie..Eric Clapton wrote this song about his young toddler son's death. I remember both well.

I was playing a Clapton CD, when myself younger son asked me about the song, I explained the story and we listened all the way though. He was about 7 at the time.
Last year he passed away from cancer at 35. This is so much more significant now

If you ever stumble on Led Zeppelin's song written by Robert, "All Of My Love" I need to say that this song is not a love song in the traditional sense, rather a tribute to Robert Plant's son Karac, who died of a stomach virus in 1977 when he was five years old - Led Zeppelin was on tour in America when it happened. You wouldn't know the reason behind it just as you didn't know why Eric wrote this, we did for both songs when we first heard them back then.

This movie that was playing was called Rush and it was about a person coming off of drugs. This is why you see the man with a gun and his wife talks him down. Of course like the other comments it was a song honoring Erics son Connor who was 4 not 3 when he fell out of the window. All the proceeds he made selling the album were going to a special fund to change the law about having no barricades from tall buildings and it worked because after the 4th floor of all new buildings there has to be no way for anyone to fall through the opening of windows.

Hey one of my favorite couples you in another couple God bless you both I love you guys I think you guys are awesome. I just think this is a very sad song for two reasons, first he wrote this song about his son who is 4 years old who fell out of a New York city apartment and died, the name of the sun was Connor, the second reason is they took this song and used it in a movie. Thank you for reacting to it but I hope you guys can check out the story behind the song God bless much love from Canada. And Eric Clapton is English actually and the mother of his child is Italian and the child Connor was 4 years old when he fell accidentally from that building in New York was not the mother's faults
