Remember, we never saw that old woman taking. We just heard Ruby’s (the Ruby who died in the hospital bed) voice talking in the direction of Ruby.
My first thought when i saw the comments about Albion : "Give him a break, he mispronounce it. It's not a big deal." 5 Minutes later: "yeah, i get why there are so many comments."
When older Ruby visits the inert TARDIS again, she says that it hasn't snowed since the first time she was there. In the next death-bed scene, she comments on how she used to be able to make it snow.
I thought that was going to be the detail they would point out during that bit, but it went unmentioned. Ah the Cat's Cradle story. I read that so long ago all I remember really is Tir Na Nog. Another detail often missed is how her birthday cards at 30 are more plentiful than at 40. Could be a statement on isolationism, but it is true to life as I'm now 48 and the people you stay close to dwindles more and more just naturally.
Pretty sure the season twist is gonna be that she ends up being one of the kids of the Toy maker and the Susan Twist chick is the one who "hid" her and has been keeping tabs on her
So from what I can gather, she was in a pardox timeloop cause she found out about the Welsh prime master, and by the end of the episode cause she didn't learn about him she broke the cycle as history could flow naturally instead of been put on a set path.
Surprised no one mentioned but ,this episode actually reminded me so much of that one sarah jane episode in which clyde was cursed and everyone that said his name began to hate him.
I wonder if Susan Twist is actually the recast of Susan Foreman? The reason she doesn't always recognize Ruby is because she got ahold of a Tardis of her own, and her appearances outside her home street are her past self encounters.

I don't think so since she's supposed to be the CEO of Triad Technologies so I'm guessing she's probably a time traveller... Who knows, probably has her own TARDIS.
One little Easter egg that I know of is when Ruby said to the woman who is following her "come on, we've got work to do" got me thinking of the 7th Doctor saying that to Ace in Survival and then it was Ace who said it the 7th Doctor in Tales of the TARDIS. Also another Easter egg would be when Kate, Ruby's Mum and some other people ran off after seeing this woman, it did give me the curse of Clyde Langer when Clyde friends and family turned against him
Kate has red nail paint, like the ominous hand that grabs the golden tooth of the toywaker that is supposed to emprison the master (in the toymaker episode), you know with all the laughs and everything (She always wears red nail paint except for 1 weird shot where she drops the ipad in the toymaker episode)
I wouldnt call it a reference or an easter egg but i havent seen ANYONE talk about the paralells between the 'stalker' from 73 yards and the Watcher from Logopolis (4th Doctor finale)
But the Doctor was able to walk up to the watcher on that bridge and have a little chit chat, came back very bemused and ernest, without telling the others why - or what he had been told. AND the watcher was flying the TARDIS to keep the kids out of harms way, somewhere outside our galaxy...
The woman in the red hat in the pub was played by Dame Sian Phillips. She's previously appeared in several Doctor Who audio dramas. I'll list the year, title, and character names below: 2018: Ravenous (Pilgrim) 2019: Torchwood: Monthly Range (Megwyn Jones) 2020: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield (The Inquisitor) 2021: The Fourth Doctor Adventures (The Director) 2018-2021: Jenny - The Doctor's Daughter (COLT-5000) 2023: The War Master (Mendrix) I think that's all of them, but if I've missed any, please let me know!
It’s not Doctor Who, but she also played Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam in David Lynch’s Dune. It would have been nice to see that mentioned as well.
And Livia in “I, Claudius”. That’s where I saw her first. I recognised her but didn’t know she was still alive, so was doubtful. Shes been mainly doing theatre for years. She’s still as regal & slightly menacing as ever. And that voice!
@@qmuser She’s a veteran actress with a career spanning 80 years (she landed her first role at 11, and she recently celebrated her 91st birthday), and she received a damehood for her contributions to the arts. I mentioned this on last weeks ups and downs that the episode titles had all been spoken out loud by the characters. I theorised that it could possibly be a clue that they are maybe in an alternate dimension, or one that is in the form of a TV show. Hence the episode titles, and fourth wall breaks, and the inclusion of supernatural elements to the ‘show’. And I’m sticking with this theory.
what does anyone think about the repetition of the number 65, the room cost £65, roger ap Gwilliam was going to spend £65 billion, and the woman was with ruby for 65 years
Well spotted. I didn’t notice it. Then again, I tend to just accept things at the time, not notice details. Maybe that’s why I found the ending very sensible & logical.
Thank you for he translation of the gestures being made by Old Ruby. While I believed it was a form of sign language, i wasn't certain, and the lack of knowing was beginning to drive me a little bit further up the proverbial wall. :D
Actually really liked it loved the creepy vibe & thought it was really well written & great acting by Millie. I need to watch it again though because lots was shot in my hometown & it takes me out of the episodes❤
Either Ms. Flood is the one who waits or Ms. Twist is. Like, if this entity is so powerful, who’s to say they aren’t just hanging back and watching The Doctor take on all these other beings?? Watching to see what they are truly capable of. Just a theory though…
I went down a rabbit hole, and have some new theories. One: Much like the White and Black Guardians, what if there is a counter pantheon to the Pantheon of Discord?? One that works to keep balance and not let chaos rule. What if Ms. Flood and Ms. Twist are part of this opposing pantheon?? Two: I watched a video where someone spoke of The Toymakers Sister, which is someone I guess the Second Doctor encountered in a non-televised adventure. This person theorized that she could be the one who waits. Supposedly she has control over time itself and can create her own little pocket universes. They also brought up that Ms. Twist could be this woman considering she shows up everywhere right now, throughout time and space. Idk, I like the trickster theory, but I feel like that’s just too on the nose, you know?? That’s just me though…
Also comes to mind for UltraCon slogans is Torquemada from "Nemesis the Warlock" with "Be Pure, Be Vigilant, Behave". Saw other person point out that when people approached the figure 73 yards away, they don't run off until after they look back at Ruby; what was it they perceived when they looked back?
You guys missed Dame Siân Phillips who was married to Robin Sachs (Torchwood) & daughter-in-law of Leonard Sachs (1st Doctor: The Massacre & 5th Doctor: Arc of Infinity) + several voice credits on Big Finnish serials.
Correct me if I'm wrong but technically the loop wasn't complete until he didn't step on the cotton. so once he didn't the second time Ruby, wld have returned full circle in the timeline with no memory
She didn't need to say anything, she was a banshee; and that is terrifying. But she was saying: 'I'm sorry I took so long', she repeated that phrase many times in the show. I don't know who Susan Twist is supposed to be, but I'm still rooting for Mrs. Flood to be a Fairy Godmother, it would explain her running away from the banshee so fast; she recognized it.
I'm still hung up on what the old lady is saying to the people who approach her! One idea I came up with is maybe when they approach her she looks to them like regular young Ruby and when they look back they now see old Ruby where the young was so this scares the crap out of them and they run. As for her mother maybe she starts to think the original one is an imposter and doesn't want her around at all.
Okay so I've watched all the easter egg videos for this episode and here's my theory about what happened: The cotton string had some sort of mystical power that makes anyone who breaks it die at a young age - since the doctor is very old, it made him die at an earlier point in his timeline and hence disappear. It also curses whoever reads the letters placed inside it. The curse involves being forever followed a mythical being who is not seen unless looked for and mutters a curse that makes the person afraid of the cursed individual and compels them to abandon whatever they love - the person at the bar from going to the bar, Ruby's mother from seeing Ruby and Gwilliam from being Prime Minister without being able to understand why they want to abandon them leaving them only able to say "ask her". In the original timeline, I think Gwilliam existed and the doctor stopped him from starting a nuclear war so without the doctor being there, Ruby was left to do it. Mad max could've also inhabited the body of Gwilliam but I don't think it was necessarily the case. At the end when Ruby was dying, she welcomed the spirit that had been tormenting her pretty much her whole life as though it was an old friend. Because of this and perhaps the fact that she defeated "mad max", the spirit granted her the power in her final moments to go back in the body of the spirit and convey a message to her young self to stop the course of events from happening.

Amol Rajan: You're going to launch those nuclear warheads? Roger Ap Gwilliam: Yes. Amol Rajan: I can't accept nuclear warheads. We need Jungle, I'm afraid.
You're missing the obvious Logopolis tie-in with what I like to refer to as the Reverse Watcher. This is a Watcher for the companion, which is different than The Doctor's Watcher in Logopolis.
My theory is that Ruby herself has a perception filter and doesn't know it. She's not actually human. Interacting with the 73 yards woman somehow deactivates the perception filter. That's why everyone stops, looks back at Ruby and only _then_ do they freak out.
I find it so interesting that The Doctor says “spoilers” regarding the prime minister, because that was only ever said when it was in reference to someone’s personal timeline. Seeing how he often brings people to the future and doesn’t say it, it makes me wonder whether he somehow knew Ruby would be involved with the Prime Minister personally, thus saying it. If that is the case, however, how did he know that when he wasn’t there for any of it
In Number 9, I also sort of picked up on another Easter egg. Kate says one potential theory was the TARDIS perception filter interacting with the fairy circle because it’s landed close to it. In “Torchwood”, Captain Jack explains that spot in front of the fountain in Cardiff Bay (above Torchwood’s base) which makes people ignore you. He basically says exactly what Kate says here, because that’s where the TARDIS parks several times.
So glad for the Alan Garner reference - such an under-rated author who wrote some seriously subtle yet trippy books (The Owl Service, Red Shift) as well as the kids fantasy (Wierdstone of Brisingham etc)
I'm glad someone addressed 13:51 and kept it in the edit. I don't think he did anything particularly wrong, he's just not that good. She could've said something before though, so they could both enjoy it. Otherwise, what's the point.
I adored this episode. Best one in a very long time. Probably the best episode since Heaven Sent. The best Doctor-lite episode at least since Turn Left, if not Blink. While the unanswered questions are frustrating, some may get answers eventually, while others like "what did Phantom Ruby say that scared people so much!?!" ultimately don't matter as much as the effect it had on the vibe of the story. I just loved this one, and it's easily one of my favorite RTD-written episodes. And every kudo imaginable to Millie Gibson for pulling off this spectacular performance straight out of the gate! Also, FUCK TRUMP. I pray that my fellow Americans wake the hell up and keep that human disaster out of office.
Someone pointed out to me that the Doctor's outfit is reminiscent of Amy Pond's outfit from the Angels Take Manhattan. A coat with a white shirt and thin black stripes.
When Ruby walked into the pub it reminded me of the scene in American Werewolf in London when the American hikers walk into the pub and everyone stops speaking and stares at them.
But the article then went on to say she got her degree 4 years later which would be 2046. Yeah I paused it and read it because I thought the same thing as you did at first.
@@zaandros We've all done it: jumping into the comments when we think we've found a mistake, when the mistake is our own. Well, *I've* certainly done it, more times than I care to remember. Far, far more times than I care to remember.
13:14 A little something that I’d like to point out as both a smart detail and as analysis for the episode: Ruby receives less and less birthday cards as she ages. It’s pretty clear in retrospect that Ruby’s stalker represents her fears and insecurities of being abandoned, being unloved, and being the force that drives other people (and machines, in the TARDIS’ case) away from her. As we see in the date scenes in particular, these fears become a reality within this alternate version of Ruby’s future: the woman - Ruby’s insecurities - takes over her life, ruins her relationships, and makes her most trusted loved ones despise her. With this interpretation, I think that I can safely assume this slow decline in birthday cards to symbolize that as Ruby grows older, she starts to self isolate herself as her fears of abandonment quite literally haunt her, a self fulfilling prophecy that this version of her falls victim to. Anyway, I just thought it was a smart detail that clearly shows the path this version of Ruby symbolically takes in her life, and wanted to share
6:25 Y Pren Marw translates to "The Dead Tree" in this case, hence the dead tree on the clifftop and the painting on the pub sign. Pren can mean wood, but not as in "woodland/forest" - rather, it refers to wooden _material_ (timber, planks etc) which is already 'dead'. However, pren can also mean tree, as in the Welsh folksong "Ar y bryn roedd pren" ("On the hill was a tree").
I can't believe you didn't talk about the similarity between this episode and The curse of Clyde Langer! (My fav episode of SJA) 🙈💗 Fantastic video otherwise tho! ^^ Edit: Also the pronunciation error, but that happens to everyone ✨
Oh damn, was that Mr. Door at 11:53? Alan Wake is canon now, and that does NOT bode well for reality! Though, I'm sure the FBC and UNIT could benefit from each other's help.
This episode is definitely on the same level as 'Blink'. When I look on my favorite NuWho season list, the Ncuti Gatwa era has the potential to get on the same level as the David Tennant era. The storytelling and writing especially of this episode are top-notch. Doctor Who at his best, nothing more, nothing less ❤
I loved this intro. 🤣 The question I have is how does this episode even work? How does the woman have a lerseltion filter and how did she go back in time? Also who was the woman at the end of the episode that showed up in old Rubys room? If it was Ruby, how?? Did she some how manage to send herself back in time to try and help Ruby? And then go to her Hospital room and send her present day self back in time? How did she keep popping up wherever Ruby went and why always 73 yards? Why did everyone run away from the woman and why couldn't we get a proper picture of her face?? Lastly, where did The Doctor even go?? He just disappeared and never came back until the end of the episode. Did he go to another dimention? He wasn't deleted because if that were the case the Tardis would have disapeared also. I would say this may come up in a later episode but this timeline was pretty much deleted when Ruby realised that The Doctor was going to step on the structure on the floor.
Does the albion symbol really have a striking resemblance to the saxon party? Theyre both white red and blue (how original...) but Saxon's party is a sideways 7/upside down V/uncrossed A over the pepsi logo, albion is clearly an A on a blue background with a white and red circle around it. As far as logos go, these two match in shape and color, but nothing else. Considering how simple logos have become in recent years, I struggle to see a connection there.
People seem to keep missing the fact that the TARDIS is getting stranger and stranger by the episode. Ruby has a key in this episode but the TARDIS won't let her in. In the previous episode "Boom" we've got the TARDIS making its new weird noise and the Doctor losing its key. Not letting Ruby in means it detects that she's some sort of threat, which has always been the case for not allowing someone inside (unless it just doesn't like someone..see: Clara). Everyone's getting cleverly distracted by the other goings-on, but the TARDIS is getting worse with every episode.
Someone else in another vid pointed out that as Ruby gets older, the number of birthday cards she receives decreases. Maybe she has some older friends who die or she neglects keeping up with friends due to her growing desire to unseat Roger ap Gwilliam. Her dates point out that she seems distracted and not that interested in them.
The old woman in the pub said some pretty significant things, even though they ended up trying to scare her. She said, "The cliff tops are a boundary between the land and the sea a liminal space neither here, nor there where rules are suspended." Then later on she says, "This land is a powerful place. It is said that he walks through the gaps, the Spiteful One." I also noticed that the PMs name is "Roger Ap Gwilliam"... If you just move the letter G, it becomes "Roger GAP William". Hinting the Spiteful One (could this be the old one or the one who waits that the toymaker never dared play) travelled between the gaps. Also adding the fact that it has been mentioned so many times by know how creatures like the toymaker and the maestro slipping into our world through gaps (created by the salt the doctor spread).
I can't get the image out of my head of Ellie threatening Sean with a knife for not mentioning River Song 😂💙💙 Also, if she doesn't know, Big Finish dropped a box set today with the Ninth Doctor and River, and it left me feeling all the emotions. I think Susan Twist is playing an old version of Sky from the last season of Sarah Jane Adventures and is also Ruby’s mother and is working with the Trickster which is a big bad of the Sarah Jane Adventures and David’s doctor met in the wedding of Sarah Jane Smith.
"The War Between Land and Sea" is almost definitely a red herring. Remember, NuWho has a distinct habit of using codenames to disguise what they're up to when shooting. So maybe don't get too hung up on that title and the possibility of a Sea-Devil related spin off
Although the reaction is not as strong because they're very powerful, Maestro recoiled when they saw Ruby on the inside The discussion about perception filters makes me think that Ruby has some kind of perception filter and isn't actually human

"Prime Minister" I assume you mean....but Prime MASTER---- you could be right.....
Surprised no one mentioned but ,this episode actually reminded me so much of that one sarah jane episode in which clyde was cursed and everyone that said his name began to hate him.
Kate’s red nail paint 👀
I wonder if Susan Twist is actually the recast of Susan Foreman? The reason she doesn't always recognize Ruby is because she got ahold of a Tardis of her own, and her appearances outside her home street are her past self encounters.
How about ehen being interviewed Roger Ap Gwillian said more than once "No more". Now where have I heard that before???
One of the names of the Gallifreyan painting in the Undergallery. What the War Doctor engraved on a wall during the battle of Arcadia. What "The Moment" (a sentient weapon) says several times in the form of Rose Tyler.
@@SeedFactoryProjectI think they’re being rhetorical my guy.
But I’m ngl hearing him say it, I was like, oooh, was that an intentional choice of words?
Maybe Susan Twist is 'the one who waits'?
I don't think so since she's supposed to be the CEO of Triad Technologies so I'm guessing she's probably a time traveller... Who knows, probably has her own TARDIS.
🤯
Or they bring back Amy? The girl who waited?
@@TheHufflepuffSaintdo you think she might be galifreyan and inventor of the Tardis
I think the whole thing is just going to be a red herring.
One little Easter egg that I know of is when Ruby said to the woman who is following her "come on, we've got work to do" got me thinking of the 7th Doctor saying that to Ace in Survival and then it was Ace who said it the 7th Doctor in Tales of the TARDIS. Also another Easter egg would be when Kate, Ruby's Mum and some other people ran off after seeing this woman, it did give me the curse of Clyde Langer when Clyde friends and family turned against him
Kate has red nail paint, like the ominous hand that grabs the golden tooth of the toywaker that is supposed to emprison the master (in the toymaker episode), you know with all the laughs and everything
(She always wears red nail paint except for 1 weird shot where she drops the ipad in the toymaker episode)
I wouldnt call it a reference or an easter egg but i havent seen ANYONE talk about the paralells between the 'stalker' from 73 yards and the Watcher from Logopolis (4th Doctor finale)
oooo that's a good one!
Great spot! A projection of a future Doctor before regeneration. After all, the Doctor and 73 are never on screen together.
I pulled up the page on the Watcher on my phone because my partner didn't get it when I pointed at the screen and yelped "the Watcher!"
But the Doctor was able to walk up to the watcher on that bridge and have a little chit chat, came back very bemused and ernest, without telling the others why - or what he had been told. AND the watcher was flying the TARDIS to keep the kids out of harms way, somewhere outside our galaxy...
I literally referred to the woman as the Watcher before the episode aired and haven't even seen Logopolis (or much Classic at all)!
The opening scene with the pub in Wales reminded me of the Slaughtered Lamb scene from An American Werewolf in London.
My thoughts exactly.
It was pretty deliberate so probably not an Easter Egg that anyone would've missed.
The woman in the red hat in the pub was played by Dame Sian Phillips. She's previously appeared in several Doctor Who audio dramas. I'll list the year, title, and character names below:
2018: Ravenous (Pilgrim)
2019: Torchwood: Monthly Range (Megwyn Jones)
2020: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield (The Inquisitor)
2021: The Fourth Doctor Adventures (The Director)
2018-2021: Jenny - The Doctor's Daughter (COLT-5000)
2023: The War Master (Mendrix)
I think that's all of them, but if I've missed any, please let me know!
I only listed her Doctor Who related roles because as wonderful and iconic as they are, I don’t think her other roles are as relevant to this topic. She’s had hundreds of roles across stage, screen, and radio, and it took me long enough to list her Doctor Who related work!
@@judithstrachan9399Yes, she is wonderful! She is indeed still alive. She turned 91 just a few weeks ago! What a legend! And I totally agree about her voice!
Siân Phillips was, of course, married to the great actor Peter O'Toole, whose last feature film was "Venus", co-starring Jodie Whittaker as his young muse.
Did anyone else notice that Mrs Flood's door was very TARDIS blue?
Yeah, Mrs. Flood's door has been TARDIS blue since the first episode we saw her in. It's definitely intentional.
I'd take it a step further maybe... Does look an awful lot like the front of Rivers diary? Even looks a tad beaten up
What did "old Ruby" say that frightened the people who approached?
im so glad someone made the reference to nardal! i couldnt get it out of my head and no one else i watched noticed or mentioned it.
Personally, I'm surprised no one else thought of Paddington Bear in that outfit.

Cos the titles are on the nose, which is fine but I like titles that are cryptic.
Does make me think of how Dot and Bubble/The Legend of Ruby Sunday are gonna fit in the dialogue without sounding jarring.
@@TheHufflepuffSaint i saw a clip of dot and bubble on RUclips and the blonde woman in the episode says it and in rogue the guy who people think is captain Jack is called rogue
@@TheHufflepuffSaint I can see The Doctor saying it in like one of his companion praise speeches "look at what you did! The legend of Ruby Sunday!" or something
@@judithstrachan9399 I liked the ending too, I've just watched it quite a few times haha
Or the Trickster is.
I think Marti's 'He's a monster' line could be applied to Siân's marriage to Peter O'Toole.
Correct me if I'm wrong but technically the loop wasn't complete until he didn't step on the cotton. so once he didn't the second time Ruby, wld have returned full circle in the timeline with no memory
She was also married to the superb actor Peter O'Toole, whose last feature-film was "Venus"... co-starring Jodie Whittaker as his young muse.
Okay so I've watched all the easter egg videos for this episode and here's my theory about what happened:
The cotton string had some sort of mystical power that makes anyone who breaks it die at a young age - since the doctor is very old, it made him die at an earlier point in his timeline and hence disappear.
I'm a little bit disappointed that you guys didn't even mention the Torchwood episode Small Worlds since that episode actually had fairies in it.
Oooooo. Imagine if the Doctor had to go up against those Fairies. They never seemed to take no for an answer.
Surely Ruby knows about the Sontarans from when they invaded the earth in flux, I dont think time was reversed at the end of the episode
Seán, we need ya for more videos. You are so good at this. 😂🇮🇪

There is no mystery! Everyone just really loves having Susan Twist on the set, so they keep insisting that she be cast in every episode!
I hope Miss Ellie is recovering as she seemed quite sick so I am very happy you are doing this video.
I could listen to Sean talk all day...
The Coke drink costing £5 is a reference to the £5 lemonade in Battlefield, isn't it?
When Ruby walked into the pub it reminded me of the scene in American Werewolf in London when the American hikers walk into the pub and everyone stops speaking and stares at them.

Nope it says she got her doctorate 4 years later after getting her degree in 2042, so 2046 is correct
But the article then went on to say she got her degree 4 years later which would be 2046. Yeah I paused it and read it because I thought the same thing as you did at first.

The TARDIS a machine? Shame on you!

13:51 wasn't that comment about things "being semi-distant in the bedroom"?
I meam you do you but not sure that's really a story for a TV sequel!
I loved this intro. 🤣
The question I have is how does this episode even work?
Glad to see you on here Sean it good when you are on this too
Awesome. So many details, how do you keep everything on your head?
Does the albion symbol really have a striking resemblance to the saxon party? Theyre both white red and blue (how original...) but Saxon's party is a sideways 7/upside down V/uncrossed A over the pepsi logo, albion is clearly an A on a blue background with a white and red circle around it. As far as logos go, these two match in shape and color, but nothing else. Considering how simple logos have become in recent years, I struggle to see a connection there.
It was wonderful to see Sian Phillips in this episode. Such a great actor!

It was like a black mirror doctor who themed episode, which I actually enjoyed quite a bit.

The discussion about perception filters makes me think that Ruby has some kind of perception filter and isn't actually human
@@maxenswlfr1877 interesting point! I completely agree about the perception filter and I definitely think it's something along the concept of Ruby or someone perhaps relating to Ruby is not who they or she thinks they are!!!
Im the pub the old lady sat at the bar mentions Herald saying the woman outside is Herald, which also means Harbinger. That means Ruby the woman was the Harbinger in this episode.
I firmly now believe Susan Twist is Susan Foreman. In the latest issue of DWM we have a short interview with Twist and she says that she constantly asks Russell that and I quote “the only reason you cast me is because of my name, really!” This implies that her name has some significance.
I'm thinking that has more to do with Twist than Susan...
