    It's shocking how close we came to 11 being in Series 8. Matt Smith gave an interview where he said he would be filming the specials, and then going back in the new year to film the next series (series 8) and only one month later he announced his departure. Something changed his mind in that one month and whatever it was, it probably lead to a lot of rewriting for the special finale

    • @gerryandersonisbest

      I think he was probably lying in that interview. He and Jenna have both said that they knew from the outset that they would only have one series together.

      @@ProtoKun7 Me too! I think Matt felt the same way. I know he regrets not staying for a second season with Jenna. I've always gotten the impression that he was already regretting the decision to leave by the time season 7 stopped filming. I think he enjoyed filming with Jenna more so than he had expected to but, didn't feel like he could go back on his decision to leave once he had confirmed it with Moffat.
      (Genuinely feel like the reason Jenna had the guts to change her mind so last minute about leaving in the episode "Last Christmas" is because she had witnessed Matt make the opposite decision and regret it).

    I’m always surprised at how many people weren’t impressed by the Time of the Doctor! It’s one of my favourites! It was a bit busy, but no so much that I got lost, and 11’s regeneration is probably my favourite regeneration. 11 as a pensioner destroying multiple alien threats with regeneration energy, and that profound speech where the bow tie drops and Pond returns and whispers “raggedy man…” I enjoyed it immensely.
    My big critique is that I’d have loved another season of Smith, or even a couple of specials to ramp up to the regeneration. But otherwise it’s a great episode and think it was a great way for 11 to bow out.

    • @pi4t651

      The regeneration itself was good, but the rest of the story was taken up with answering the questions raised by eleven's arc (who is the silence, what do they want, why must silence fall, why does the doctor die at trenzalore, etc) and that part fell flat to me.
      For that sort of "mysterious secret" plot to work well, you need to do one of two things. Either you frame it as a challenge for the viewer to figure out, with the goal being for them to go "oh of course, I should have seen that" when it's revealed. The Harold Saxon/you are not alone arc is a pretty good example of this. Or you make the eventual answer really important for the series, with shocking implications for the series. The timeless child, for all its flaws, is a very good example of that.
      In this episode, the answers that were revealed didn't feel remotely guessable from the hints Moffatt had previously given. And they aren't important at all for the show, given that they were never mentioned again. Yes, the Doctor got a new set of regenerations, but that wasn't because of the silence arc. They weren't actively trying to stop the doctor getting new regenerations, (well, no more so than any other bad guys who try to kill him). So the things that were revealed didn't feel important to me either.

      yeah, I started watching Doctor Who with Capaldi being the doctor, and while I watched back to the old episode, I goes like "who is this young noisy man that's lack of wisdom?", but still enjoying it as, well, these episodes are great
      THEN I watch the Time of the Doctor, at the moment of his regeneration, although he supposingly changing into the Doctor I like the most...
      ...I don't want him to go
      all the build up before and on that special is such amazing that, Matt slowly become yet another of my favorite Doctor and actor, his performance is nothing but great and the plot elevated it. • @nich6200
    @nich6200 6 месяцев назад +40

    Once again, the creators did nothing wrong with their promotion for wild blue yonder. It’s people that over speculated and made speculation videos in the vain of WandaVision mephisto arc. RTD may say he shouldn’t have done that, but this is one of the cases where he didn’t mess up, it’s on the fans for just over hyping themselves and not accepting the episode as it came.
    I went into it not having watched any speculation. The only thing I had heard about it was that no one knew what the episode was about and I loved that. And my enjoyment of the episode was fantastic. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. When I heard that people were disappointed by it and then heard what everyone was expecting based on nothing but what they told themselves would be in it. Sometimes you just gotta go into an episode and enjoy it. Not speculate what it could be. The people that look back at the handling of WBY and think it should’ve been handled differently need to accept that the only reason they were disappointed with the episode was because of themselves.
    For the people that went into the episode not speculating and not knowing anything and still didn’t like it? That’s perfectly valid. I’m not talking about those fans. Only the fans that were disappointed it wasn’t what they were told it would be by other fans or themselves.
    I hope RTD actually does this more often with the show

    • @gerryandersonisbest
      @gerryandersonisbest 6 месяцев назад +5

      The fans are to blame, for sure. That said, RTD is more than smart enough to have seen the speculation coming so arguably should've tailored the episode's marketing to counteract that as much as possible. He knows what fans are like, so he really didn't help himself here.
      And to be fair to fans, when you keep a 60th Anniversary Special SO top secret, what else are they going to do but speculate on what surprises may be in store? It's only natural. All 3 specials suffer from feeling too much like just normal episodes, which is a bit deflating anyway - so of course they're going to be most disappointed with the one that was kept the most secret.

    @danvinesexgod 6 месяцев назад +45

    I think with Matt's finale, it's biggest problem was trying to do hundreds of years of his life in one hour. Skipping over most of the events. Imagine it though as a 12 part series. Similar to Capaldi guarding the vault in S10. The Doctor guarding the crack on Trenzalore but occasionally sneaking off for a relevant side adventure. While other episodes focus on attacks on Trenzalore. Each episode Clara returns to find the Doctor older with still room for further implied adventures but it gives us more room to believe how big the story is. I think it's a shame Smith went in a special as ending on a full series could have been amazing.

RTD came right out and stated that there are no returning Doctors in the anniversary specials, to try to curb the conjecture. Also, after watching Star Beast, and having three separate bait and switch moments, when i thought the plot was going one way, and it went another, i capitulated that i was not going to be able to guess Russel’s plans. The conversation could have ended the time of the Doctor episode with the Doctor suddenly realising that he was going to have to take things a bit more carefully from then on, which would have ended up with Clara putting herself in more dangerous situations so that the Doctor could survive to save another day

      Wow so unexpected ! it is easy to hate, but did you even try to watch for what this era is rather than just shit on everything ? it is flawed, may not be your favourite era or the best era, but it has it's strenght and it's weaknesses, like all of them. Yes, characters did not have the best writing, but IMO the number of companion and the existence of RYAN let it down. The era had so very good parts, the villains were good (mostly) and Dhawan's Master was amazing. And there was Dan (he's good at this)

    more history:
    At first, the Doctor wasn't touted as a Time Lord or even an alien. Nor was Susan. Sort of.
    The first "regeneration" wasn't called that. It was called a rejuvenation, suggesting Troughton was a younger Hartnell.
    The second "regeneration" was just a forced change by the Time Lords who made the Doctor change his appearance. Neither of the first two regens were called RENGENERATION.
    The third regen was called that mostly due to Buddism ideas. The planet Gallifrey was not named until TERROR OF THE AUTONS in season EIGHT, eight years after the show started. The Words Time Lord didn't appear until SIX years after the show started. Time Lords were named in WAR GAMES. BTW< the planet the Doctor is from was first called Jewel some two weeks before THE TIME WARRIOR called it Gallifrey so the Doc is from Jewel.
    AND Time Lords could live FOREVER barring accidents. That wasn't changed until DEADLY ASSASSIN, some 15 years after the show started. And for Time Lords THAT WAS the end (12 lives, done) and then that changed in TIME OF THE DOCTOR or something.
    The First Doctor and most of the time of the Second Doctor, neither had TWO hearts or two pulses but ONE. That he had two hearts wasn't revealed or happened in SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE, seven years after the show started. The Doc had an exam in WHEEL IN SPACE in season 6 and Gemma never revealed anything unusual about the Doctor. Hmmm. Maybe his new heart grew as it did in the 8th Doctor novels?
    At least twice in the show's run during Tom Baker, Tom's Doc declared he was no longer a Time Lord (or a medical Doctor even though Troughton's Doctor HAD or almost had a medical degree). In BRAIN OF MORBIUS, PRYAMIDS OF MARS, and INVISIBLE ENEMY, Tom's Doc says things that make us think that when he severed his ties to the Time Lords, he lost some Time Lord abilities and didn't even consider himself a Time Lord, "not anymore, now I"m just a traveler." Fans ignore these things. In ENEMY, he even declares a physical part of his brain is gone or severed because he left and that made him no longer a Time Lord.

    Also, I didn’t have a problem with Wild Blue Yonder being so secretive and I genuinely don’t get why it’s a problem for so many. For, years, a lot of us (myself included) have hated so much information being revealed over and over instead of just letting us watch and I enjoyed the return to letting us learn as we go.
    Also, it reminds us that not every episode has to be an event. It reminded us that it’s ok to just let people enjoy ordinary content when it comes out too. Anyone over the age of 35 will remember a time when you got to know nothing about any show until the episode came out. Those are the days I want to return to. Every episode being heavily redacted until the release rather than just the events. If ordinary episodes are redacted as well then that over time will remind us not to overthink and get over-excited.

    Interesting list, and an enjoyable watch. I would only add a couple of observations off the top of my head:Philip Hinchcliffe is on record I think from the 80s that he considers 'The Deadly Assassin' as a "failed experiment", although not necessarily a mistake for that. I think he said his intention with that serial was to encourage Holmes to really "go for it" and push the boundaries of the format to the extremes, and that therefore the result was not necessarily successful, but nonetheless instructive and helpful. As for the Plasmaton problem, yes this seems emblematic. The way you describe them reminds me of what Terrance Dicks noticed with the Krotons, Dicks famously stating that while the Krotons looked good, they could hardly move and so all they could really do was 'loom menacingly'. The thing about both Kamelion and the Magma Beast is that they were as props capable of much more than we ever got to see on screen, in the case of Androzani due to time pressures (the beast was more fully animatronic than was seen on screen) and in the case of Kamelion partly due to time, and the tragic incident of the only person who knew how to properly program the thing dying, taking those secrets with him. The Magma beast id sometime cited as an example of even the very best of Doctor Who have this isolated example of a really rubbish monster, the giant rat in 'Talons' and the giant snake in 'Kinda' being the usually cited examples.

    Odd take I think Matt smiths exit was more tuned towards him having a good exit on behalf of his career rather then the dr getting a good send off a good example is what we did with tenent he is the dr in so many minds that honestly it was harder for him to leave then any other incarnation imho he left and jumped into roles that were almost completely opposed to the dr and was smart to do so he was able to avoid the stamp of the dr being his major role and in turn was able to show what he can do as a villain honestly he’s a great villain almost better I’d say but I think even he knows he allowed the dr to take a hit so his career wouldn’t either way not a judgment on its validity just a feeling that kind of writing is what led to the lore being so totally fugged up the timeless child and the rest kinda puts more of a stain on the story then any of the added political stuff everyone lost there minds over the agenda but looking back we only complain about the major story beats that changed up so crazily

      It's way more nuisanced than "it's a good thing." There's a reason why that isn't always the default. Keeping everything a secret negatively impacts ratings; creates false expectations that aren't met, leading to poor responses; squanders the ability to build hype, resulting in a lacklustre reception and fewer fans, etc. Simply saying "never revealing spoilers (which basically means "not advertising") is always better" is INCREDIBLY naive.

      I am decidedly spoiler-averse. I have never seen a spoiler for any film or TV show that ever ‘improved’ my viewing experience, or made me watch something that I didn’t want to watch.
      I am an adult and I can decide for myself whether I enjoyed any particular TV episode or film. I do not need someone to tell me “everything I need to know” about something before I watch it (“previously-on”s being the exception). I find that I have more interest in the story of the episode than when ‘spoiled’ and I appear to notice things that my (spoiler watching) friends always seem to miss.
      Let’s face it, we’re talking about Doctor Who - I’ve been watching it for so long that I know what it’s about, and I don’t need to be told who or what ‘this week’s villain’ is, or what next week’s storyline is, in advance. I will judge the story by watching it, not by what someone else has to tell me about it.
      I believe that I have seen most episodes, both the ‘Old Who’ and ‘New Who’. I have not necessarily liked every episode, but have enjoyed watching them, and regardless of what any self-opinionated internet gob-on-a-stick might think, every episode has its own worth, like it or dislike it.
      Everyone should be allowed to enjoy Doctor Who (or any other TV show or film) in their own way, spoiler-free if they so wish.

    The end of flesh and stone wasn't that bad, i felt it expanded on Amys character in ways other companions didn't have. She met him as a young girl, a man from the sky coming to protect from the crack in her wall, and does so then disappears then many years later comes back again and saves the world. So i can see the fantasy built up in her mind over the years, hence the games her and Rory used to play. It makes her character more human than say Clara who always felt somewhat alien. The scene was Somewhat sexual but no overtly, plus the doctor shot her down. Also you'll find that whole series onwards is more Sexually charged than any other. Thank you River Song.

      I agree. The kissing scene with Amy always made perfect sense to me and I think it was definitely on track with Amy's arc/character. We were already given a number of clues that Amy had kinda built up the Doctor as her romantic fantasy before that. So, it wasn't exactly coming out of left field! I mean, she had already run away on the night of her wedding with her very own Peter Pan! The Peter/Wendy parallel is very strong with the Doctor/Amy and Wendy was always in love with Peter... not that Amy was literally "in love" with the Doctor but, you know what I mean. He is her childhood dream/hero so, her attraction definitely made sense. Plus, Amy's romantic attention worked as the perfect motivator for the Doctor to want to bring Rory along in order to shift her focus away from him.
      (And, personally, the messiness of their dynamic in that episode is what kinda helped suck me into this darn show in the first place so... I do have a strong affection for that scene 🤣).

    Let's not be too harsh on the end of (classic) series 20, for two reasons. (1) No, Kamelion didn't really work, for a number of reasons, but one of them I've heard is that his main programmer died in an auto accident before production of "The King's Demons". The other programmers were just not capable of putting him through the full range of his abilities. (2) "The King's Demons" was not supposed to be the end of the season. That was "The Return", featuring the Daleks. (It would be produced the following year as "Resurrection of the Daleks".) But industrial action hit the BBC that year, and once it ended the second half of the "Enlightenment" shoot and "The King's Demons" took over the studio days originally reserved for "The Return". ("Enlightenment" almost became another "Shada" by not being completed, but as the finale of the Black Guardian trilogy, JN-T decided it was a priority to finish it.)

No one's saying that Amy loving the Doctor was out of character, just that having a scene where the Doctor gets forcefully kissed by a 22 year old is extremely immature by the show's standards. It's also a hell of a leap to go from dozens of soldiers dying to Amy deciding she's a sex-crazed groupie who needs the Raggedy Man right then and there. The whole scene looks weird in the context of the angle their relationship eventually took anyways.

The setup and leadup to the kiss was there and was also an important part of the early era as it gave the Doctor their own autonomy and not just to be a mysterious 007 esque character left from Tenants doctor.
      Rewatch it. :)

    Wild Blue Yonder fell so flat.

      All the specials felt a bit flat TBH but Blue Yonder was perhaps the only one that actually captured the spirit of Dr Who.

    I am hoping Time of the Doctor will get a Target novelisation. Hell I'd love a target regeneration books box set, seriously Target, free money there with many stories to adapt.
    Seriously though a Time of the Doctor novelisation can be as long as it wants, do as much as it wants because no budget needed when your imagination can do the job.

    Jodie Whitaker defense drones for Daleks was an interesting idea. Which needed more development I'm actually kind of sad that it was not further developed for a story. Which I think should have had more development.
