    Man I wouldn't be handling these alligator snapping turtles without chainmail gloves! I have been told what the regular snapping turtles can do. I guess you know what you're really doing please be careful!

    • @WearyNomad
      @WearyNomad Год назад

      Chainmail helps prevent cuts, not crushing, which is what snapping turtles do. They snap their jaws shut with a lot of force.

    When I was a kid visiting relatives in Eastern Ky, I found one in a creek after a storm. I took a thick branch, poked at it, it grabbed the branch out of my hand, hissed like a snake and it’s head was huge. My grandmother told me it was a gator turtle, to stay away from them, because they can break arms and legs.

    Cool recycling of invasives. Was just about to ask about the source of fish when I got to the end where you explained. Love spearfishing and bowfishing, but where I live only invasives/less palatable fish are legal to hunt that way so I might have to find a local turtle guy. I won't kill something that doesn't get eaten/used.

    When you guys talk about having permits to hold AST's do you mean to own them or do you have to have a permit to touch a wild one(I know it's illegal to take one home obviously but I just mean to touch).

    • @GregsTurtleHaven
      @GregsTurtleHaven  3 года назад +3

      So depending upon your state, you may need permits for possession of (pet) alligator snappers, and in some states (Florida for example) you need a permit to handle wild alligator snappers

      Depending on how big your turtle is, you can feed Mazuri Freshwater Turtle diet, or if it is a bit bigger, Mazuri Crocidillian Diet small
      Once mine hit a certain size she didnt mess with the small pellets (freshwater turtle diet). Now she loves the Crocidillian Diet small (1/2" pellets). They float on top of the water and she chomps it right up.

      @@GregsTurtleHaven I am glad they are not going to waste, but as a former fish gigger, and bowman, it is terrible what many are doing to native Gar and Buffalo/Sucker fish. In many places where they used to be abundant they are now rare here in Missouri what has replaced them is Carp.

  • @thornyturtleranch4u
    @thornyturtleranch4u 3 года назад

    Oh, those buffalo fish are not an invasive species, theyre naturally occuring. Now the yellow carp or also called russian or german carp are introduced as well as asian carp. But the fish in this video are buffalo, plentiful, not at all in trouble of low numbers. And im surprised the dont cut the spines and subdermal spine bones. I heard that John did cut them out. I use a Kabar big brother knife very sharp and i cut the spines and associated bones completely out. I heard from someone John lost some turtles to the carp bones damaging the intestines.
