I based a campaign of my post-apocalyptic roleplaying game on this episode of Thundarr. Except Mindok's robot body was 5 stories high. It took place in Sudbury, Ontario. There were no fire whales, but the player characters were put to work in Mindok's slave camp building his giant robot, until they escaped and joined the resistance.
"I will protect you, if you use your scientific knowledge to help me. Build me a robot body into which I can transplant my brain." "Umm, I'm a botanist." "And I study global warming." "But... you are scientists! All scientists can build robot bodies that can house brains!"
Scientists: Mindok, your robot body is ready! Mindok: Excellent, now to transplant my brain. Scientists: Yes. Yes that's right. Go ahead. Mindok: The transplant is complete! Hey, why can't I move my arms or legs? Fix them! Scientists: Goodbye Mindok
I love the cold, mechanical sound of Mindok's voice. On a related note, if fire whales were a real thing, I don't think we would have to worry about saving whales from extinction.
For those asking what the heck a Mok is: Ookla's species are called "Moks". He was added to the show because the producers insisted that they have something "like Chewbacca the Wookie", thinking it would sell toys. He ended up being the best character, even though the creator of the show hated the idea initially. Supposedly Ookla's people are descendants of highly mutated lions that evolved intelligence and bipedalism, which explains his strength, bravery, and savagery. From wikipedia: The series was the creation of Steve Gerber. Gerber and friend Martin Pasko were having dinner in the Westwood area one night during the time Gerber was developing the series. Gerber commented to Pasko that he had not yet decided upon a name for the wookiee-like character the network insisted be added to the series, over Gerber's objections. As the two walked past the gate to the UCLA campus, Pasko quipped, "Why not call him Oo-clah?"[5] Pasko later became one of several screenwriters also known for their work in comics, such as Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, to contribute to the show.[citation needed] After writing several scripts, singly and in collaboration with Gerber, Pasko became a story editor on the second season. Other writers included Buzz Dixon and Mark Jones.[6]
I heard about UCLA too! I would be interested to know where the assumption that Ookla comes from mutated lions - I have not heard it before nor can I find a reputable source.
See? This is what happens when you try to save a species from extinction! You march, you protest and then thousands of years later they mutate into fire whales and fuck up everything. People can be so short sighted.
@@camoanddonuts7894 I imagine they didn't even know who Darkseid was. They just commissioned Kirby to design some villains and he submitted Darkseid's with a rotating head. They said, 'yes we like this one!' Kirby took his cheque. Just a baseless rumination!
@Camo and Donuts: IKR!? It is a shame it only lasted two seasons it was a great show. It could have even ended up with an animated movie like Transformers and G.I. Joe did. But alas i guess it was not meant to be. 😒
lessons learned: magic makes whales crash into each other using flaming rainbows, Thundarr saves Ariel from a hungry narwhale, and Ariel always wanted a wet mok. Hmmmm.
This was my favorite episode! Thought it could have made a good novelezation w/ Mindokk's backstory & such. (Always wondered if this story was the insipartion for Mr. Aldiss's 'Dracula Unbound' where the the last scientists on Earth are enslaved in an evil villan's castle???)
I like Ariel I have nothing but love for her,but sometimes she was such a dip! Couldnt she have used her magic on the whale before it got to her instead of just sitting there with that goofy look on her face 2:15?
what more cool folks the nibiru and planet x connection to this series almost a past hint of apocalypse to come that opening is now a 2015 phenomenon on nibiru
I didn't see the big fish breathe fire and/or display a miraculous power to make fire burn under water! So, if you'll pardon the pun, why the BLAZES are they called "fire whales?'?
they do have a flamethrower power. But it only works in air. Also, it's fired from the small black horn on top of their heads.... and pretty weak yeah.
Tekken7, any chance you've got to upload Thundarr The Barbairian season 1 & season 2 episodes, please let me know.
Yea on another account and I will let you know
I really do miss this 80s cartoon alot!!

One of my absolute favorites when I was a kid along with the thundercats and He man
Lords of light! Demon Dogs! ( " one man bursts his bonds...")
Damn! I was hoping the fire whales would explode when they collided.
Yeah, bummer.
'I won't protect you.....even from me'! LOL.

these were actually NASA personnel from Cape Canaveral. Also IIRC Mindok actually gave them the design to build anyways.

'He's a barbarian' this barbarianphobia was quite common back then

yeah... it's the other stuff in and near the ocean I'd be worried about.
It's probably how they adapted after the events of Star Trek IV made the species self aware. 😀
🙂🙂🙂🐋🐋🐋💥💥💥
"Then I won't protect you. Not even from me". Better do what that maniac says
One of the more interesting episodes story-wise, and Mindok is one of the cooler antagonists, particularly with his big reveal.
fantastic background paintings

Highly mutated lions. Huh🙂🙂🙂 I knew about the UCLA.but yr post is very informative.
I heard about UCLA too! I would be interested to know where the assumption that Ookla comes from mutated lions - I have not heard it before nor can I find a reputable source.
Oh my goodness this is my favorite!!! FIRE WHALES!!!!
"He's a BARBARIAN!!!!" lol
See? This is what happens when you try to save a species from extinction! You march, you protest and then thousands of years later they mutate into fire whales and fuck up everything. People can be so short sighted.
Mindok was the one fucking things up by controlling the whales. Another human... at least, he used to be.
Still makes killer whales seem like dolphins.
🙂🙂🙂
Well, they aren't killer whales. They're fire whales. Different species, at least partly supernatural.
I LOVE the way the wizard TALKS!! 😂 ❤ AWESOME 🎉 BARBARIAN!!!!
My favorite Thundarr foe is Gemini. He reminds me of Darkseid. Jack Kirby was one of the artists on the show, so it makes sense.
I think Ruby Spears decided to base Gemini on Darkseid, just a guess though
Gemini is badass
I too ❤ Gemini-
@@camoanddonuts7894 I imagine they didn't even know who Darkseid was. They just commissioned Kirby to design some villains and he submitted Darkseid's with a rotating head. They said, 'yes we like this one!' Kirby took his cheque.

Looking for this for ages. Havn't seen this since 1993 onn Cartoon Network UK.
This set the tone for the 80s cartoons to come, and was one of Hanna Barbara's best ideas and hits, but only 2 seasons.
Correction: Ruby Spears produced Thundarr but they had worked for Hanna Barbara for years before this
@Camo and Donuts: IKR!? It is a shame it only lasted two seasons it was a great show. It could have even ended up with an animated movie like Transformers and G.I. Joe did. But alas i guess it was not meant to be. 😒
The fire whales were fresh out of fire today.
I love this cartoon 🥰
When I lived in Japan, I was called a Barbarian. Be assured that I did my best to live up to the image that the Japanese have of Americans.
Ookla headbutted a whale. Awesome.
Great.
The damned Fire Whales.
Back.
Nice Fishey.
No eating before dinner.
I guess Ariel forgot that she had magic powers.
+MARLON WHITE She needed her hands and arms to tread water.
MARLON WHITE see, where she fucked up fire whales are mammals, not fish.
Why does she have magical powers if she forgets she has them?
She rolled a 2, and the Fire Whales rolled a 6, and won the initiative.
@@SeaJay_Oceans seriously though... pretty much. Ariel's powers take time and she can't insta-cast.
Me: Fire Whales? What? How?
Thundar: "This is Mindok's work!"
Me: "That answers nothing."
fire whales!!!!!
Really need to have Thundarr released to DVD & Blue Ray now
www.amazon.com/Thundarr-Barbarian-Disc-Bob-Ridgely/dp/B00466X70Y
Ask and you wish is granted...
I'm sure you have it by now, but you can get it on Amazon. Along with everything else on the planet that isn't part of a shortage.
lessons learned: magic makes whales crash into each other using flaming rainbows, Thundarr saves Ariel from a hungry narwhale, and Ariel always wanted a wet mok.
Hmmmm.
Ariel always was a FOX
Hi are there any episodes where Ariel get wrapped by snakes?
2:44 Why the hell didnt she use her magic on the the Fire Whale in the first place?
Writing
Mindok the Mind Taker!
3:04 So a Mok skull is harder than a Fire Whale's I guess.
Don't trust him, he is Skeletor!
Or his cousin at least.
Yay! Whales start taking names! They are very small whales though. Hopefully the scientists weren't theoretical physicists.
Please upload the episode with the Grissly Snake!

Now there was an aquaman and justice leauge moment waiting to happen
@Battery hat...this is when cartoons made sense...
Rene
Which cartoon is dat
Thundarr
Fire whales !! Kkkkk great!
I like Ariel I have nothing but love for her,but sometimes she was such a dip!
Couldnt she have used her magic on the whale before it got to her instead of just sitting there with that goofy look on her face 2:15?
She knew what she was doing would end up with her having a wet Mok wrapped around her. Which is what she always wanted.
@esteetabernac Not just any whale, but a fire whale.
fire whales don't chew their prey...
It's because they don't have hands and can't brush all those big teeth...
what more cool folks the nibiru and planet x connection to this series almost a past hint of apocalypse to come that opening is now a 2015 phenomenon on nibiru
Goddamn Fire Whales! That's not how you use e-cigs...
A wet mock around me?
I had this recorded from Cartoon Network... MINDAK!
The frack is a Moc anyway.. was that ever explained?
I didn't see the big fish breathe fire and/or display a miraculous power to make fire burn under water! So, if you'll pardon the pun, why the BLAZES are they called "fire whales?'?
they do have a flamethrower power. But it only works in air. Also, it's fired from the small black horn on top of their heads.... and pretty weak yeah.
Yeah man, Gemini, was truly twisted. This wizard guy Mindok must be a Dalek in disguise!
put some more up
He does look like a Dalek, doesn't he?
