Lean2Rescue spent a glorious fall weekend on Weller Pond off of Middle Saranac Lake. We installed a new lean to built by our BOCES partners in Saranac Lake. Great time on the water, great time around the fire, and a great time giving back with friends.
Special thanks to Jeff Tiede for providing the drone footage.

Great Job! Spent a couple of nights in the old lean to there in 2021. Did the owl make a visit? Sitting, watching the fire we saw (but didn't hear) something dark fly across, just past the fire, silhouetted against the light of the pond. Shined a light and saw an owl sitting 15 feet away. I think he was looking for the mice that were inhabiting the old lean to.

Hahaha, we evacuated some mice when we tore apart the old lean to.😂

Nice! Two questions. What is the purpose of the low hanging roof in the back? And do they ever build these lean to's with just a door size opening in the front so a tarp could be hung to keep out cold and snow for winter campers? What are the advantages of having the front end wide open?
I'm with a river group in Ohio who is interested in offering camping areas in places along the shores of our river.

This is built in the style of an Adirondack lean to. Originally, these structures were built by guides on the spot by cutting small trees, installing a bark roof, and lining the dirt floor with evergreen boughs. These lean tos eventually evolved to the log structure you see, inspired by the original lean to.
These lean tos within New York (and especially the Adirondacks) are built to a standard plan with an occasional modification. However, the front is always open. Winter campers bring winter rated gear to endure Adirondack winters.
Having the lean to open also tends to keep them cleaner and les inviting for critters to take up permanent residence. Having the front open always folks to sit on the deacon (front log) after a great day in the woods and enjoy the warmth and flow of the campfire. Where permitted each lean to will have a fire pit front and center.
