- An Adirondack canoe trip to Boreas Ponds. The most remote and beautiful body of water in the Adirondack Park in New York State. Take in the best views the Adirondack park has to offer which include the Adirondack High Peaks and specifically the Adirondack Great Range.
I'm paddling a Placid Boatworks Rapidfire and my buddy Mike is paddling a Placid Boatworks Oseetah. Geoff and Emily are paddling Hornbeck canoes. And last but definitely not least... my lovely wife Barb is paddling a Swift Cruiser.
*VERY IMPORTANT NOTE ON DRONE USE*
Before launching a drone be aware of the FAA rules on usage and restrictions. The Adirondacks also have their own set of rules regarding drone use. You are not allowed to launch and operate a drone from within the High Peaks Wilderness... which Boreas Ponds is within. My opening drone shot was taken outside the no-fly boundary just north of the LaBier Flow in the Vanderwhacker Wild Forest and the drone kept within my line of sight. You can reference the land classifications map below for legal flying zones. Outside of the technical rules... and as a basic human courtesy... I also take special care to make sure I am not interrupting anyone's camping or nature experience. If people are around in these peaceful places... the drone stays grounded. What a great crew and a NICE trip! Great way to start of 2023. Have a great year paddling. 🛶
Thank you John. Happy New Year... and may 2023 be a great year in the water for you.
One of the most pristine places to paddle in the ADK's for sure. The whole of the Blue Ridge Road is magnificent. Nice video Butch.
Thank you Linda. I love the Blue Ridge road also. Boreas Ponds is indeed magnificent. Not shown in this video but something I've done on other trips... is to explore up into the Boreas River on the north end of 3rd pond. Have you gone up in there? So remote and peaceful.
Will be checking out more of your videos Butch. I do try to watch them when they pop up on the Paddling in the Adirondacks group.@@CanoeCampClimb
I hope you enjoy them Linda. Making the videos is a fun, creative release for me.@@lindamacfarland8468
I have not explored the river stretch at the end of 3rd Pond. I will definitely keep that in mind. I do enjoy exploring little crannies of water. @@CanoeCampClimb
Been enjoying your videos, great photography and info!
Thank you. I checked out your channel and love your vintage truck camper. Wai tuntil my wife sees that. She is gonna want one :-) And beautiful skin on frame canoes too. I'll look at your channel more later when time permits. I often debate on how much info I should give. I don't want to give too much because I don't want to take away the thrill of the adventure and unexpected.
thx for the inspiration. Have a great New Year All Year !
Happy New Year to you as well Steve. Thanks for watching.
Never been to Boreas....But now I know I've GOT to check it out. Great stuff as always.
Thanks Scott. I really appreciate it. You'll love Boreas.
This video has really good production value/audio/etc 👍
Thank you.. and Happy New Year. This video was a lot of fun to put together.
@@CanoeCampClimb Happy New Year to you guys too
I love the adk more than anything
It grabs the heart and never lets go. Thanks for watching David.
Ya I first went up in 2001 to bear hunt at still water. While out on the reservoir in a canoe on the first night, he had me stop paddling, and I heard loons for the first time I was bit by the Adirondack bug from that moment on.
@@davidrenaldo2252 I love bringing people to the Adirondacks and having them experience their first loon calls. They cannot believe a bird can make those kinds of sounds.
wow , beautiful spot, looking forward to being there this year.... Geoff and Emily !! Joyce is the Best ! good stuff Butch.
thanks... maybe we will see you out on the water in 2023.
@@CanoeCampClimb I’m open to adventures. HMU !!
@@robertbeirman107 I remember a few years ago you did the paddle/hike of Saint Regis Mountain with us. I will never forget your big canoe and beer cooler setup. Lol. Barb and I did that same paddle/hike trip this past July. Here's the video:

@@CanoeCampClimb hahahahaha. OMG. My memory is shitte but you where on that ??!! Great day. I almost died when that fkers sailboat almost hit me. Lol. ❤️🤣
@@robertbeirman107 haha. Yeah that was a close call. Geoff tells me you now have a pack canoe. Congrats.
What a beautiful place! I'm hoping to get there sometime this year. Looked like a great time with friends. Thanks for sharing!
Tanks Alan. Your yellow Nova Craft would look nice against those high peaks.
My brother and I wheeled our kayaks 4 miles in/out in the middle of this past summer…. Is was really worth it…. (Once!!) Looking forward to going back up. Really nice video…
Thank you RJ. The nice thing about having that long carry in is that you have the place all to yourselves. Happy New Year.
Beautiful scenery shared with friends! What can be better than that?
It was a glorious day indeed. Happy New Year.
Looks like a great trip. I like that you all had different canoes. A good variety is displayed in this video.
Thanks. A wide variety of pack canoes were well represented on this trip. Ironically... everyone in this group will be paddling Placid Boatworks canoes in 2023.
Darn there goes the variety pack. Why is everyone getting new canoes? Your wife's canoe looks brand new...
@@AbundantAdventures she has been wanting a custom Oseetah with sparkles in it 🙂
@@CanoeCampClimb haha can't argue with that. I'm sure she can find a good home for the other canoe.
Very nice video quality and edit. I know the effort it takes to put this stuff together. We want to get to paddle the Adirondack areas soon. We’ve been exploring too much of Michigan and the UP of Michigan lately. Cheers from Ohio!
Thanks Ben. I took a quick peek at your channel and look forward to checking out more tonight. The song you use on your feature video is in the project I am working on right now. We have similar taste :-)
@@CanoeCampClimb yeah I heard a few similar songs to what I’ve used. Yes, similar taste for sure. We know what is good on Epidemic when we hear it. I hear them on others videos too. It’s all good. Those single seat canoes are cool. They look fast. 👍🏻
@@benthekayaker they are very much like a topless kayak. Yes... I often hear songs I've used on other channels. Epidemic has a huge library and I love the service they provide.
Wonderful share of what looks to be a gem of a location. From the parking area, how long of a carry is it to the launch site you used and then how far from the launch site to where you set up camp? Many Thanks! Happy Paddling in 2023!
Thank you. We had to park at a much farther parking lot a few miles away due to some road work. However, the closest parking lot opened later in the Fall and is .75 miles to the put in. We camped about a mile away. There is certainly places to primitive camp closer as long as you stay 150 feet away from water and trails.
Thank you so much! We are taking possession of our two RapidFires sometime late this spring. We kayaked and kayak camped for eight years with two 17'+ fiberglass ocean kayaks. They were wonderful boats, however their weight was always an obstacle. Portages were nearly impossible, and loading and unloading the boats was an effort. They sold very quickly, and we are very much looking forward to these light weight hybrid canoes and exploring the many Adirondack locations we have watched in your videos. Spring cannot arrive fast enough. We are looking forward to watching more of your videos as two dedicated subscribers.
@@Tnapvrvideo Awesome. Congrats on the new Rapidfires.... you are going to love them. I really appreciate the support and the nice comments too. I am working on a video that I am very excited about that sums up our 2022 paddling season. We also have a lot of exciting canoe trips planned for 2023. Cheers.
Barb's paddle is cool. At times it looks like patterned loon feathers, and other fish scales.
It does look pretty cool. It is the Werner Camano Hooked. I like how the sun sines through the translucent blades. Werner makes some other great looking fish patterns too
Hope to get out there someday. Maybe they'll blaze a trail to Allen from that direction.
A few of my friends bushwacked Allen from here. That sure is a long hike from the Tahawus trailhead. I sunrised Allen back on the 4th of July in 2017. Quite an experience watching the sun come up over the High Peaks.
I know a quick search of a map will answer these questions, but how far is vehicle access from a campsite and how far from the capsite is the water access? I have a jeep and would like to get as close to a campsite/put in as possible.
Hey Benjamin. There are no designated sites on the Boreas Ponds. But you can primitive/backcountry camp as long as you are 150 ft from water, roads or trails. So there is ample opportunity. The closest you can drive to the put in is at the 4 Corners parking area. The canoe carry from there is about 3/4 of a mile on a nice gravel road.. fairly flat. I'm not sure I was able to fully answer your question.... but go for it... you'll love it there. Here is a link to the DEC website with info on Boreas Ponds. Also feel free to reach out to the DEC... they have always been responsive when I reach out to them.

@@CanoeCampClimb thanks for the reply and for the videos.
We just revisited this video for a second viewing we are sold on the Oseetah for me. Your friend in his Oseetah is the size of one of my brothers: both have 20 pounds on me. I'll fit this canoe perfectly. The room behind him is plenty big. I could easily see a dog behind me if that came to be, and both duffle bags in my wife's Oseetah. Thanks for redirecting us back to this video. This has out our minds at ease seeing a guy of his size easily fitting into the Oseetah. Might you know which seat height your friend opted for in his Oseetah?
Glad I could help. Mike went with the low seat. I also started with the low in my Rapidfire... it seemed like the safe bet... but this year I changed to the mid height. It puts you in a slightly more athletic position and you can better use your core tot generate more power. You can't go wrong either way.
Excellent. My wife will definitely go with the high seat. I am going to try her high seat when we test paddle and see if that will work for me as well. I would prefer to be as high as possible provided I am not compromising the stability of the Oseetah by sitting in a high seat. We paddled a pair of P&H Cetus ocean kayaks for the past eight years. Because of their low profile and narrow 22" beam we developed a low angle paddling style through those years. Sitting as high as possible in the Oseetah will allow us to clear the gunnels more easily. Is the Oseetah fairly stable?
@@Tnapvrvideo yes very stable. Of course the higher the seat off the floor the more stability you loose. But it is super minor. Barb actually has balance issues when walking from time to time... but never has any issues paddling the Oseetah.
Excellent. Thankyou! We will plan for a high seat in both boats and use that test paddle day to be sure this will work. Based on what you have said regarding the Oseetah being very stable I expect that a high seat will be just perfect for both of us. Thankyou so much for all of you assistance! Someday, we will see you both on the water to say hello in person. Have a wonderful 2023 of outdoor fun!
@@Tnapvrvideo Sounds great. I am pretty sure Joe can put the seats in pretty much last minute on day of pickup... they just need a little time for the adhesive to set... but best to double check with Joe.
I know there are no designated campsites around the the ponds but did you see any spots that are suitable for an overnight?
Hey Chris. This year the DEC should have I think 9 designated sites close top the pond (near the LaBier Flow and 4 corners). As for finding your own primitive spot.... I didn't see anything obvious... the shoreline is pretty rugged all the way around. But as long as your 150 ft off the water, any trails or road... you can camp anywhere. But it is pretty thick in there. There is also the leanto option not too far from the put in.
How was the portage?
It is a 3/4 mile carry between the "4-corners" parking lot and the put in on Boreas Ponds. It's a gently rolling gravel road that a cart can handle. I usually just carry. But if I have heavy gear (cooler)... wheels are a good idea.
Nice to emet you!Omg-so amazing masterpiece. do you wanna promotion?- Canoe. ;))
Thank you. I really enjoyed putting this video together. Happy New Year.
