Is Living Plan-Free in Thailand a Mistake?

  • Welcome back to my channel, today, we're tackling a topic that's been on my mind ever since I embarked on this incredible journey - Is living in Thailand long-term under 50 and before retirement a genius move or just a risky gamble? 🤔 Let's break it down and get real about this life-changing decision!
You guys know me - I'm not your typical 9-to-5 desk jockey, and I'm definitely not banking on a massive pension to swoop in when I hit the golden years!. Nope, I'm the kind of person who believes in living life on my own terms. So, I took that leap of faith, packed my bags, and set my sights on the land of Thailand!
That's the reality I've chosen for myself - a life filled with unforgettable experiences, new friendships, and endless opportunities for personal growth. Okay, let's address the elephant in the room - the skeptics who might think that living it up in Thailand before retirement age is just a reckless move and i can see that also. I don’t have any plan or direction in the future, but i’m at a stage in life where i’m happy with that, the unknown.
    Let talk……

    42. Been living in CM working as a teacher for the past 6yrs. Only planned on staying 9 months or so. Married now. Have 1.9 yr old son. I've lost out financially by living here, but no amount of money could replace the experiences I've had living here for 6 years. Cheers.

You are winning at life Wayne. I was making a 6 figure salary in the UK 'in the matrix' focused on my career and 'progressing'- new house, new lease car, ibiza holidays etc.... working long hours and living for the weekend. Thanks to your videos I was inspired to simplify my life and live frugally in Thailand enjoying nature and relaxing. Guess what? I am much happier here and have no desire to go back to the rat race.

Being 70 and broke in Thailand is probably not much fun, but the same could happen back home in the UK and that life would be even worse. I think you're doing just fine, enjoying life for what it is. If you can retire early, great. If you can't, there's nothing wrong with doing a bit of work to keep a roof over your head. There are always new opportunities to be seized

Mixed feelings. On one hand I find your decision to live the way you do inspiring. On the other hand, you do have to keep your future well being in mind. If your financial situation is one where you will have enough income to sustain yourself even minimally in the future then I say keep doing what you love. Money isn’t everything and freedom is priceless. Take it easy, mate.

Glad I come across this I can relate. Thanks Wayne! I am 30yo from Melbourne Australia and I just want out. Just did 1 month in Bali and can never look at life here the same. Just love the Asian way of life so simple and laid back. Have been seriously unhappy here for years.
Getting a lot of pressure from family and friends to do the standard life here work 9-5, get married, have kids and just have 4 weeks holiday a year. But I just can’t see myself doing it.
Fortunately I’ve worked hard since high school and invested in real estate young so got a good chunk of money to support me.
Guess the only thing holding me back is feeling like I’m wasting time by going over there and not growing my wealth anymore. But what for at the end of the day to buy an overpriced house somewhere I don’t want to be.
Looking at going over there for 3-6 months now and see where it takes me!

I’m envious of your lifestyle because I’m a similar age to you, I’m 49.
I did everything I was supposed to; studied, worked hard, found a woman to share my life with, had kids and as some would say, living a life of quiet desperation.…then there was a breakup, and that’s when my life ended and it became the life of my ex to toy with. Mental games ensued and felt like I was being held ransom with emotional blackmail for 18 years and watched my life pass one miserable day at a time while my ex took great glee in making anything and everything as difficult for me as possible.
Only recently (in the last year or two) have the child maintenance payments ended and I’ve had a bit more money in my pocket, but now I find that no matter how much I’m earning, it’s only just enough to get by. I worry that if I continue like I am, days will turn into weeks, which will turn into months and years, and before I know it I’ll either be too old to travel and six feet under.
In hindsight I wish I threw caution to the wind when I was younger, wasn’t so responsible, and lived my life.

Another great vlog, Wayne. I think you’re a pioneer! Things have changed. People even in their 20s and 30s are not only questioning things but they’re acting on them, moving to another country and taking risks because the “old” ways don’t make sense anymore. And technology allows them to make some money remotely. Only time will tell if it will work out. I’m Thai, 57, been living in the US for over 40 years and I’ll be slowly moving back as well. I”m glad you’re there sending us these vlogs so we can see what’s happening in CM in real time. Keep going for as long as it makes you happy 😊. Cheers 😊!!

I'm one of the old guys who's retiring next year to Chiang Mai. A little of what we have in common is I'm leaving at 62 and if I stayed here in California, like everyone says I should, I'd barely be able to scrape by, but would probably have to work longer. But I'm done. Just so you know, the naysayers are just jealous. I would have done what you did but marriage and a kid got in the way. All done now, though! 😊

Where problems can set in is if you have responsibilities for other people like a partner and children. Even so there are people in this position that still do it. If you are single your options change because you get to decide everything, like you can sleep on the beach and eat rice and bananas but you couldn't do that with 3 kids! I had material comforts but after travelling for years I found I was coming to Thailand with only carry on luggage, then I realised all my things at home weren't part of my day to day existence. Everyone has their own story and needs and for me like you freedom to make choices is the most important thing to me. I just don't want to die owning lots of things and being a slave to them to the end.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  Год назад

Yes, that true, I've been able to do this because I don't have any responsibilities. It's hard if you have a family and kids. I'm the same with all the belongings, the moment I got rid of all the crap I didn't need, I was happier. Thanks 👍

Time enjoyed is not time wasted at all!
Most people spend most of their time trying to make money so they can hopefully afford to buy themselves a bit of Happiness, once in a while. Hopefully. Most people live a life that they very much dislike 23.5 hours a day.
You might not be getting paid much in money but you make much, much more in the most important currency: Happiness.
I always lived my life asking myself what I will think about how I lived my life when I'll be 98 years old, a minute before dying. The answer is NEVER that I should have made more money. I'm over 50 and I NEVER regretted my choices. I traded money for Happiness. I could have been very rich, I went for very, very, very Happy. Best investment I ever made!
I'll be pretty pissed if I die with a lot of money sitting in the bank. It would mean that'd I have wasted all this time working instead of enjoying life.
You live a Privileged life, Wayne. A Life that very few can afford. Enjoy it to the fullest!

I'm 52 already. I currently live in San Francisco, CA. I lived in Thailand for a few years previously way back in 2004-2006 where I was teaching. I really enjoyed it and miss it. Since then, I been a teacher for the most part here in San Francisco.
I am similar to you where I hopped around at points in my life where I went from job to job and have had periods of unemployment.
I am currently unemployed and been debating taking the plunge back to SE Asia. Maybe Vietnam instead.
I have a decent savings but have some obligations here. Also, as you described, it's like I have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other! The Devil's whispering in my ear: "Just go!" While the Angel is whispering the opposite!...LoL.
I been trying to switch careers to Govt. or something with a good retirement path so I'll be set in my golden years. But I do think about SE Asia a lot! I have to decide soon.

Hi Wayne, Charlie from Boston, USA. I love your videos. I am only halfway through this video, but I feel compelled to reach out brother You don’t need a plan mate you just need some balls. Which you got. You are who you are.. no ones approval is needed. I visited a friend down in Florida hes retired living on a golf course with a big car watching Fox News every day, counting his money. Hes One of the saddest unhappiest men I know. He was instrumental in helping me decide to travel. I’ve been going to Mexico for two years. I just returned to my house in Boston. I am planning a trip to Thailand. I am 60 and just getting by brother ‘s but I get a check every month. My daughters are grown and living In other states I lost my wife three years next month. If you do not control your destiny, someone else will… whether it’s a woman or your “friends” or a news channel, a country or a culture. It is men like you that encourage me Wayne… to continue to go where my courage & my balls bring me. 10 out of 10 of your friends are pretty sure they know what’s best for you Wayne. And their heads are so far up their ass. …They can’t see the light of day. many of my friends are loaded with money. It doesn’t make them happy and it doesn’t make them successful. Most are miserable. Arguing about politics fighting with their old ladies brother. Keep moving forward Wayne & never look back.. you have a great spirit brother. If our paths cross while I’m in Thailand, I would love to buy you a cup of coffee or a meal brother. Keep on trucking. 😊 Peace

I came to Thailand without any real plan in 2005 aged 49 and still here at 67. I knew the money would eventually run out without a job or some form of income. Fortunately, at 55 my pension came to rescue and at 66 the UK state pension. Now financially secure with no debts and more income than expenditure.
The greatest benefit of living in Thailand, as I have experienced it is not having to go to work. Each day is your own, make of it what you want. 👍😎

Wayne, all I can say is you seem happier and more content then 99% of the people that I encounter every day. How you're achieving that doesn't really matter, it's the results that count. How many people are spending their lives slaving away to achieve a "dream" that society says they should have, which btw is becoming almost impossible to achieve these days anyway. I've been watching your videos since the very beginning. You are truly inspiring to me because I see myself in you. A simple guy wanting a simple life, and just to be free and happy. Your channel is one of the most authentic out there. I am currently working on building my nest egg to move to Thailand, mostly because I don't want to ever have to return to the US. Having the courage to do what makes you happy takes guts and might not always be easy but I can't think of anything more rewarding.

    53. Took two months holiday there traveled all around, kinda sussing out potential places to live. I have enough to live there if I wanted to long term. But... it was fun travelling around, nice food, sightseeing, few bars and massage here and there. I thought to myself, what the hell will I do here every day? I don't think I can do the breakfast, do not want to be another YT'er chilling the whole day, need to have some kind of routine, sure could join groups and get involved in things. One thing I really missed was CLEAN air!! Was so sick of cars everywhere and pollution, up country would be better but for me, I can't give up my life back home, i.e. no way will "Sell the farm" and come to Thailand, the risk of financial failure is too high, better I think is to come there when I feel like it and take it from there, see if things can work may do ed visa or even PT teaching work for adults, which is a lot easier than high school which I did before. You also need to understand that life is cheap there and I don't just mean prices.

I don't need a plan, as long as I do not spend more than my income is. But I wouldn't be able to do that in a "normal" life either.

Although my mind is desperate to leave, my heart says stay and take care of the parents as they're aging. My initial plan was to get a TEFL certificate and teach English in Bangkok to get started, but word on the street is, inflation is skyrocketing and 1k USD won't provide much there these days. I love a simple life and I don't even drink, but being on a tight budget is no fun. Some people online agree however that scraping by there is overall better than struggling here. I'd like to think that's true, but if sh* hits the fan there's no social programs to fall back on out there. Just money earned. I wish you the best! Hope you find your desired path 🤙

I came back to Asia to live and work when I graduated school. Then I was convinced by my family that I should move back to the US and develop 'roots'. Well, it really didn't work for me. About seven years ago, I realized that I could just sort of float along the river of life and be alright, or I could take a risk and move back overseas. This time I moved to Europe, but kept up the grind. I really wanted it all, but now I am just tired of it, and am trying to build up the funds to move permanently (probably to Chiang Mai). My problem is that I am probably at the age that if I try to live there for three years or so, and try to come back to another well-paying job, I probably won't be able to get one at that age. Of course, one can always find something. I really wanted to have something that bring in a little income stream on the side, and I had thought of doing a VLOG like you. I've been hearing recently that that might not be possible on a retirement visa. Anyway, I really enjoy the work you do and hope you keep it up!

Not under 50 (I’m 70). You are DEFINITELY winning at life by being here. For all I now have and have seen in my 70 years I can honestly say living here with absolutely no plans is MY idea of paradise!!! Been here going on 8 years and wake up each and every day KNOWING this is as close to paradise on earth as you can get. I am fortunate to have the ability to live well anywhere but I would live HERE in a dam hostel if I had to. My friend you HAVE won at life - just enjoy each day for what it is whatever comes your way. The future will take care of itself regardless of how the “think” you can guide it. Just relax, breath and enjoy the hell out of this paradise!!!

Simple life, happy life. Just another “get by guy” (and older than you) ready for another adventure in my life in Thailand. Economy is uncertain, life is uncertain. I put my trust in God & let Him take care of the rest. You’ll be ok Wayne.👍

Key is having constant money generation method in place while enjoying life in the Asia, otherwise you will drain your savings within few years' times in Asia and then you have to go back your home country to start the life from the scratch with very little money in hand! this situation would be even more stressful to entire future life. So, I think enjoying or retiring in the Asia long term for most guys will need lot of advance planning and executing over the years with patient!

Wayne mate, which is more important, working in the "Ratrace" and stressing daily or living the dream and being relaxed whether it's in Chiang Mai or anywhere else? I'm sure that you know the answer to that one. There are countless people in the world that would do what you have done if only they had the guts to do it. Dont keep analysing just enjoy yourself knowing that you are happy and the envy of many, many people. Thanks for all the wondrful vlogs over the years and looking forward to many more from you. We are visiting again in 8 weeks time ( Not that I am counting)😀. Alan and Lillian in OZ

Hey Wayne one suggestion I would say is to learn more and more about a skill/trade that you still can do, it would give you satisfaction and expand your line of work.
