It’s all in the video 🙏🏼

Great channel! Glad i discovered it. I too am in the midst of selling everything and preparing for retirement in Jomtien at year's end. I live in one of the most materialist places in the US, Palm Beach County, Florida. I could retire here and play the game.....but I don't want to. I've had a long and good career, set for retirement economically, and cannot wait to arrive with nothing but my suitcase and a backpack. I don't worry about what I'll do in Thailand either. My interest is in who I will be in retirement. I'm putting down the yoke of 40 years of responsibility and for once will be in full control of my own life. Can't wait.

Pete you made a great video congratulations on your move. You've been here six months I've been here way over 6 years:-) I agree it's the best decision I ever made. I can relate to a lot of issues that you mentioned especially selling everything. I owned nine houses and of course one house full of furniture and artwork and personal belongings. When I sold everything and donated a lot of things and just gave some special things to my children. I felt a whole ripped out of my heart. But a year later after selling everything I realized it was a addiction not a hole in my heart and I was feeling a sudden cut the cord of my addiction. Americans especially American women cannot understand that the piles of things that they have in their home are really an addiction. They cannot see it. This is why once you sold everything and moved on you felt better. You are healing yourself from an addiction of the American so-called dream which is really a nightmare. Congratulations you broke free :-)

Perhaps the best video so far. my impression is that they keep getting better and better. Love that you open up about yourself so much, even in things we've never really talked about. i feel like i'm getting to know you in new ways, just as i think you feel you are getting to know yourself. Love the line "allergic to air." What IS sunset season? So glad you are happier with yourself than ever been (at least for the past 30 years). Definitely the right decision to sell all and do this. So very proud of you. Your parents did a great job. (LOL)

Being a retrospective on my time here this video was naturally going to possibly be the best. I did put a little more thought into its overall structure than most of my walking vlogs.
Yes, I’m absolutely learning more about myself as this journey continues. Might be the topic of another video haha. It feels good to be able to open up here and share things about myself that I’d probably never do otherwise with most people, even those closest to me. It seems to be good for the channel too!
I loved the allergic to air line too. It’s great when something witty comes out of me on a walk… may it begin to happen more often.
From my understanding subset season correlated with the rainy season. It’s not that I’ve heard it referred to as sunset season but a couple people have simply said rainy season has the best sunset…
Well, I’ll probably be telling you all this in a few hours when we talk lol

Great video, Pete! Thank you for recommending it. I think the decision to retire early and move to Thailand getting out of the rat race is the best thing someone can do. Unfortunately I went through a divorce recently that guarantees I'll be working 10 more years, probably, until I'm 62 to recover a bit and save some more $$$.
I'm working 12 hour shifts 3-4 days a week until then which isn't too bad - it just makes it difficult to get enough time off to travel the way I'd like to. Thank you for the videos and community you're putting together here - your videos showcase the way a lot of us would prefer to live, I think, than some other channels that focus primarily on the party scene.
I look forward to watching more of your content and appreciate all of the work that goes into shooting and editing the videos.

I’m sorry to hear about how your divorce has left you. Love and relationships are such a complicated part of life for many of us.
Plenty of people come out here to party but plenty of others are here just for a better life. 12 hour shifts can be rough but I think the 3-4 workday week is a great exchange for those long days. Best wishes.

Thank you for the replies and please continue to show us great ways to enjoy retirement in Thailand. :)

Looking to stay a month, and check out at least 4 areas of Thailand. Bangkok, Jomtien, Chang Mai, and Nong Kai before hopping over to Vientiane to check out Laos. It's awesome that there are folks that play D&D there and I could totally see getting back in to that myself. :)

I enjoyed Vientiane (and have shot a few videos there now) but it’s not a fit for me. I have heard from many others who love living there and maybe I just didn’t see enough of it. We all feel home in different places though and it’s about finding YOUR home. Luang Prabang on the other hand… I’ll be back there for sure.
I got back into D&D about 5 years ago after stopping in the mid 90’s. Since then it’s become a big hobby for me and has helped me form many great friendships. I hear it’s easier to find games in Chang Mai and Bangkok but I’m always happy to run games here.

Just got back from living in Thailand for 6 months myself. One of the biggest problems for me was the crushing loneliness... How did you meet your friend group there?

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  Год назад +3

Man, I’m sorry to hear about how bad the loneliness for you was out here. Before I moved out here, I searched Facebook for any local Dungeons and Dragons groups. I found one and joined right away telling them I’d love to play after I arrived.
Luckily they had a small group playing when I moved here and after lunch with one of them they allowed me to sit it. I was invited to play with them regularly after that first session and we soon were inviting each other to do other things together.
The person who vetted me became my best friend out here but now he’s recently moved to Bangkok… maybe I should do a video about all of this.
It can be harder in Pattaya to find like minded people I think, especially for someone like myself but starting with hobby groups is a good way to go. We all need friends and I was lucky to find a few kind and honest guys out here with some shared interests. Now I’m in thai school and trying to make new friends.

Great vid, Pete. This really hit home for me as I've been considering a full-time move to Bkk. The loneliness is a big factor. I'm now living outside of Seattle and surrounded by some lovely family, but my resources are also limited and I really love the Thai people, food, affordability, etc. I lived in San Diego for 15 years and in other parts of the country. I'm a semi-retired RN, btw. You definitely fit the mold of a Trader Joe's employee haha .. only meant in the kindest of ways. But yeah, I'm def considering the big move. Currently, I am in Valencia, Spain, for the same reason .. to check the livability out. But Thailand is likely the ultimate destination. Can I ask .. why Pattaya? The sex trade scene would only seem depressing in itself and there are so many other great areas, even within Bkk, where you can avoid areas like Sukhumvit and all the seediness that comes with other "typical" farang. You def seem like one of the good ones. I try to also be. Anyway, would love to keep tabs. Thanks again.

I really think you’ll appreciate my next two videos coming out… they’re all about finding good people and making solid friendships abroad. It’s been a topic that has been resonating with a lot of my viewers the last few weeks. During this time I’ve been making more effort to extend my friend circle as well with fantastic results so far.
I’ve been called a TJ’s poster boy for decades… it was definitely a good fit for me. No offense at all taken. I also have several RN friends including one in my old travel group. What are your thoughts on Valencia? Spain and Portugal are high on the list for possible European homes but I might even start off in Poland after spending several years in the SE Asia tropical climate lol
Why Pattaya… man, I really need to get that video done lol. I actually like it more than I thought I would but that’s likely due to my friend circle. I wanted a medium sized coastal city with a large expat community to help ease my transition into living abroad. Coming here, I instantly knew I didn’t want to live in the city proper and I quickly fell in love with this small secluded neighborhood of Kasetsin Cosy Beach Pratumnak. I’m 15 minutes from town, in a quiet area that has a wonderful breeze about 30 of the time that’s perfect for my mental health and for my morning filming routine. For the most part I’m pretty far removed from the sex scene but it can be a bummer. I had fully planned on moving to a different area each year I live in Thailand but I’m open to hanging around here a bit longer… possibly.
BKK: might be too big and crazy for me
Chasing Mai: sounds perfect except no ocean and the burning season would kill me both physically and mentally. That’s a real bummer.
Phuket/Koh Samui: possible options. In my mind they’re too touristy but I’m sure there great little areas like I’ve found here I’d love.
Pai: intriguing especially the cooler climate (I think) but possibly too hippie dippy even for me.
Small provinces: might be my long term lifestyle eventually.
Take care and like I said… I think you’ll really like my next 2 videos. Less than 60 hours until the next one! 🙏🏼

@@peteonretreat2023 I really like Valencia. Madrid was also very nice, but inland and a bit more hectic being the capital. Valencia def has more of a beach town feel, and it's more affordable. I've heard good things about Lisbon, but also that is too touristy. Learning Portuguese is also supposed to be a lot tougher than learning Spanish. Poland sounds interesting. I've heard very affordable too.
Pattaya, yeah, I would imagine you can find nice areas in just about any town. As for Bkk, the same applies. Many other parts of Thailand I need to experience too. But I tend to stick on the west side of the river in Bkk. The Baan Wanglang Market is one of the best markets in Bkk and with few farang and plenty of friendly locals as you get to know them with regular visits. I've stayed at the Baan Wanglang Riverside Hotel a few times .. and Uncle Loy's is also very nice .. and cheap. Are you familiar with The Roaming Cook (YT)? Gary Butler is his name. A good lad who I've met with in the market a few times. He's British, has a British wife and they have a kid. But his focus is very much on getting to know real Thai culture, almost entirely through food. You might enjoy checking out a few of his vids. But that's my idea, or want, also .. to experience real Thai culture and not just take advantage of and exploit poor people (women in particular) simply looking for a better life for themselves and their families. Anyway, despite the language barrier, I've got some friends over there. I miss it. The scene, the people, the vibe.
Indeed, my man. Looking forward to your next vids. Only seen three, but they've each been spot on. Please, carry on. :)
