En mi juventud estuve muy vinculado al BNC y fui muy amigo de Jose Pares, Josefina Mendez y Alberto Alonso....Siempre admire mucho a Alicia; acepto la lentitud del pdd; pero la orquesta necesita mucho ensayo... Gracias!
May I compliment the conductor? He's matching the music to the movement perfectly, and there are places like around 5:51 where they are taking it unusually slowly. My guess on this would be around 1980, which would make her around 60. So pretty incredible that she's able to dance on pointe at all. I just found some vids of her in her prime, and there truly was no one like her (although Fonteyn and Plisetskaya had completely other skill sets, so hard to say one was better than the other two).
I believe that she was 70!!!! I first saw her dance live at the Met when she was 56. Her Carmen was brilliant. I was so seduced that I held to the arms of the seat because I wanted to rush to the stage and dance with her. I never missed a performance by her when she was in NYC. I was privileged to see her dance Giselle several times and her artistry wowed me. I saw Fonteyn and Plitseskaya and the best was whomever was performing. I was sure I favored Maya, then I would see Margot and would be head over heels for her and the same for Alicia. All three commanded the stage and, for that matter also the amazing Carla Fracci and I imagine Marcia Haydee, had I seen her live.
I have to admit I didn't see a lot of value in taking the petit allegro at the speed of sound when it meant she couldn't extend her feet all the way or articulate the beats well. I'm really torn on her continuing to dance {and on pointe} this late in her life. Amazing she could do it at all {and I think her eyesight was again failing, so extra brave to essay this}. OTOH her strength and extension are pretty much gone, so it's sad to see this if you've seen any footage of her dancing in her prime, when she was less ballerina than force of nature! I'm wondering if the applause is for who she was or if, because Alonso, the audience thinks it's seeing spectacular technique?
