This performance was conducted by my father Benjamin Steinberg, who was director of the Ballet de Cuba from 1959 - 1963.

Beautiful Giselle! She was born to dance Giselle and thank goodness she was able to pass on her rendition to the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Lovely.

I'm only now finding these clips of her in her prime. There truly was no one like her. Here, I love her very firm "Nope" after she takes Albrecht to the safety of the cross on her grave and the way her obeisances to Myrth just flow into the next dance steps. I would say Romantic ballet was her strength but there's that tape of Black Swan where she twice gets off 5 perfect revolutions from a single pirouette preparation. That would raise the bar even today. Thanks for posting!

To clarify some of the comments: this is actually a movie made by cuban film maker Enrique Pineda Barnet in 1965 (no idea where you can buy it nowadays, sorry for that). Madame Alonso was 45 at the time, way far from her prime. Although she is well known for her take in this ballet, I found her performance very detached and dull, almost with no personality in it, she only came alive in the entrechats which, to be totally fair, are probably the fastest I ever seeing even for today's standards.
Also, to be fair too, I think it is a very old fashion choreography; you have to remember she was in her prime on the latest 40s and earlier 50s; and she was blind too. She learn this choreography from the great Alicia Markova and adapted to her personal taste for her Company in Cuba, where she ruled as an iron dictator. For today's audience, this version lack luster and virtuosity; but you have to remember that ballet training, popular taste and even ballet shoes have improved a lot since then, and you should not compare those Giselles with today's.
By the way, Balanchine, under who she danced some of her best ballets (his ballet "Theme and Variations" was made for her and Igor Youskevitch), said that what we see in today's videos about her don't give her any justice. She was great, no question, but her Giselle is something of the past and we need to judge her on her time, not how we see ballet today.
Unfortunately, the Cuban Ballet Company still is dragging this old choreography, which makes their dancers looks old fashion and dull; it needs an update, for sure, because this choreography has acted as a restrained belt for their potentials as dancers.
I will add something that every Cuban knows: Madame Alonso acted within her Ballet Company like a Sargent in his personal trench: she didn't allow any creativity or luster who could shadow her; that's why so many dancers of the Cuban National Ballet left the Company, and even the country. Also it created a big problem for choreographers and ballerinas, and to her personal partenaires too. For instance, meanwhile she was still dancing "Carmen", she didn't allow to dance that role to any other ballerina until she was many years in her retirement. BTW, her "Carmen" is my favorite, she is mesmerizing in it.
Said all that, she was a great Giselle.

I totally disagree about the choreography it’s not dull or old fashion and the story it’s more coherent than many others I’ve seen. And for the technical difficulty ask any other ballerina to dance the Cuban version and see if they can.

    La vi bailarlo muchas veces.
    Irrepetible.
Imperecedero.
No existirian.

I have to say her mannerisms and over done affectation spoil the whole interpretation for me-less is more. Loipa should have been the prima in my opinion. Politics again wins out.

It's a romantic ballet. You need this manner. Nowadays we have more simplicity but still the great ballets must keep their classical flavor :)
