Doug I have owned one of these, if you really want to see what the acceleration is like from a standstill, hold the revs at 6500 and feed the clutch out. Just be ready to grab second gear! The 4wd is amazing at launching the car off the line, and it's not so hard on the clutch if you feed it out rather than dropping it. Enjoy!
i lived in quebec for a few years when it was legal to have R32's (they had a 15 year rule vs 25 in the USA). You had to know someone who was familiar with them and source parts from japan. It can get expensive real quick. The power steering hose for the HICAS (rear wheel steering) requires pulling the engine to replace. Amazing cars though!
February +1 on that! I can vividly remember the guys at the Toyota dealer being puzzled how to service my USDM Corolla AE86 in the Netherlands even though they actually sold the Levin variant here with mostly the same parts. In my case the bodywork differed and the engine got swapped for a European 4AGE. They thought they would have difficulty in getting the "right" parts. So in the end I started giving them a European VIN to work with. ;) So how would they react on driving this into the shop. :P
Judging by the facial expressions that car must be awesome! Speaking of Australia the R32 was banned from racing here as it beat the v8 GM and Ford products so easily, then they changed the touring car races to be just for Ford and GM. If you cant beat them then ban them hehe
yeah but for us p platers its not GTR's its NA skylines and some turbo silvias that are way above what they're worth cos they're decent fun turbocharged p plate cars, can't even drive a GTST r33 without full license hahaha
ahmedp800 Yeah, I'm not too sure about that Ferrari bit either. Granted I've never driven a Ferrari of any model, but the only Skyline GTR I haven't driven is a R34, and there's a reason why I keep buying FWD Honda Type Rs when I have had every opportunity in the world to buy a Skyline GTR. What reason you ask? I've never been impressed with a Skyline GTR. I find them to be pretty boring. Can they be retarded fast? Sure they can, but I'm a lot happier in a car that isn't a money pit.
koopatroopa187 that is the worst logic i've ever heard. GTR is to boring, so ill buy a honda "r" lololol. It's not a money pit if you have money. How about get a better job.
Paul CCraciun rear brakes are that size in most sports cars, it's the front brakes that'll have huge rotors. Not being a dick but its "disc brakes". Break discs is when you start throwing cds on the ground.
Tom Meiner actually roads we first designed thousands of years ago for horses to be on the left side, while in the u.s we drive in the right side of the road. So being on the left side and being RHD is normal and being LHD is weird. But I do agree that LHD is way easier and also most people are right handed anyways
Doug DeMuro What you should do, is get upgraded 300z brakes put on the GTR to keep cost down, & improve stopping power. Do a full catless exhaust, upgrade the clutch & do a BPU so you're still using stock parts, but pushing a bit harder.
R32 brakes should be exactly like the 300ZX twin turbo brakes. Only R33/R34 GT-Rs offered Brembos as the factory setup. Also the R32 GT-R doesn't have any factory oil coolers and thus suffers from high oil temps with prolonged track use.
Mike Wu I wish they were the same. Even the non-brembo sumitomo brakes are an upgrade for the 300ZXtt. R32 GTR parts can be a pain to get in america :(
interesting you compared this to the focus ST. As an ST owner, i'd love to compare these back to back. stock for stock. if you're ever in the Syracuse area let me know doug . Also, my name is on the list for the new RS. that would also be a fun comparison. in due time of course.
hey doug two things: first, I think you should add some stuff 2 your skyline like a momo steering wheel and a higher shift knob for more leverage when doing quick shifts (if you ever want to shift fast) second, if you get another car (which I think you will since you said on jalopnik that you like to test with different cars), you should get another Porsche, like the 996 you used to have
I just subscribed yesterday after watching the Hummer in the city video. I'm jealous of your wealth lol maybe when I'm 40 I'll have a couple 25+ year old imports...
ravesilly since he has driven lhd he's whole life and probably learned to drive in lhd so switiching to rhd will take some time to get used to and it will never feel as comfortable as a lhd car would. And hes living in a country where they normally have lhd cars which mean they drive on the right side of the road which just means that overtaking and manouvers are a lot harder in everyday situations also! :)
ravesilly Besides it being frustrating driving a RHD car on roads meant for LHD vehicles, Doug's Skyline also has inversed turn signals. Asian RHD cars have the turn signals on the right. You push up to signal left, and down to signal right. It's nearly impossible to learn it b/c it's second nature to use your left hand for the indicators. Drove me mad drying to drive a RHD Aurion in New Zealand.
Marshall Knutson I'm an American who has lived in Japan for almost a decade. It really takes no effort to switch between the two. Sure, I'll be hitting the wipers every time I go for the turn signals for like the first 15 minutes I'm back in the States, but that's really about as long as it takes to get used to it.
Having one of these is like driving something that only people with "special glasses" can see. The special lenses are worn mostly by males 16-30 t whom this car jumps out at them like a neon orange Lamborghini does to the average person on the street. When these people see it, they go bonkers - honking their horn or giving a big smile and thumbs up, taking pictures, pointing, or waving. Kinda makes your day. But to most women (any age), and men over 35-40 - even "car guys" driving German sports cars or American muscle, the car is completely camouflaged, part of the background. They all suffer from JDM blindness like I once did (was blind but now I see!). Its a special feeling only being "seen" by the people you would want to be seen by; People who know and appreciate the car. Unlike the blaze-orange Lamborghini, you don't get, "Wow, cool... What IS it?". Except when someone sees the right-hand drive, most already know what it is and simply admire it. Filling up with gas is, well, a gas. Almost every time, someone asks if they can take a picture or look inside. Usually its quiet admiration - a compliment and one word, usually "awesome". So I paid $38,900 for mine (yes, they've gone up a LOT -- thanks Doug), but its also in pretty amazing condition and has fairly low miles (67k) with a few very nice upgrades you can't see (nismo turbos, Fujitsubo exhaust, Ohlins shocks, etc.) - in other words, awesome ;-) I figure over a couple years, I'll have gotten $10,000 worth of mood-enhancement therapy and more driving fin that should be allowed. And if things keep up, I expect to get what I paid for it - maybe more (have you looked at the prices of these things lately?) Get one while you can. The awesome factor of having an original Godzilla will never go away, but the supply of good quality specimens will only shrink as more people pull then out of circulation - and others drive the 'good condition" ones into tire walls trying to hit their apexes too fast.
Terrail Cunningham oh God I can't even imagine how fucking hard it would be to drive a car like that. Even if I could get used to an inverses pedal setup, just going back and forth from my RHD car to my LHD car would be a nightmare.
Terrail Cunningham I lived in Japan for 25 years and now I'm back state side... the configuration is the same. Driving on the right hand side is easy...
I disagree RHD takes away from the fun. Or, should I say, from the most amount of enjoyment you could get. A friend of mine also imported one from Rivsu and he lets me drive it every once in a while. The first time, it took me between 15 and 20 minutes to get 100%, fully acquainted with the new setup, mainly for shifting and lane positioning. Now, after a few months, it's second nature.
Arthur Sperotto I don't get why people defend LHD over RHD so much... That's like saying it's better if your're right handed than if you're left handed... Why? It's stupid to even what RHD in the states, because the entire country is built for for LHD cars... Anyone who says RHD or LHD is "better" is a tool. It's about whatever is more convenient for the person.
Now sink some money into it, Stock they are very tame to drive. Get it up to around the 300KW mark and you will love life. Will still be reliable but have a fair whack of go.
You left out the part where your oil pump fails and you end up needing another RB26. Seriously, I hope you address that as they're notorious for failing. Also, it looks like you got a really nice example of a R32. Most of them are falling apart like every other 20+ year old Nissan.
koopatroopa187 Everyone always says shit like you are. "O (blank) is gonna blow and your gonna need to get a new one have fun with that" How about you stop being a downer about the car and see it how it is, instead of just looking at it waiting for something to break on it... I have an 02 Wrx and people always say "oo have fun with ur rebuild after you fry a piston ring" and bullshit like that. Its soo fucking annoying...
snowfreak551 I've lived in Japan for almost a decade now, I've seen way too many RB26s with dead oil pumps. That's a well known issue, and I was hoping to bring it to light with the creator of this video. If he didn't know before I made the comment, he'll know it's something to look into if he reads my comment. Also, you have my condolences about your Subaru ownership.
koopatroopa187 Lol best car ive ever owned, what do u drive the, the non fail-able car? Some how it lasts 500,000 miles without any problems what so ever? You must because your criticizing others about their cars pretty hard...
snowfreak551 I currently daily drive a DC5 Integra Type R with a 290whp K24, and I also have an EK9 Civic Type R that's being used for gymkhana. I don't expect my engines to last for 500,000 miles; however, I can rev both of them to 9,000 RPM without them falling apart. Something neither the Nissan, nor the Subaru can do =P
Not entirely true. There's 2-ish (really 3, but it's real expensive) ways to import such a vehicle. 1) Once the vehicle is 25 years old, it's exempt from smog emissions and safety testing. Thus it's fine to import and the DOT isn't going to hassle you. You can insure and drive it as you wish. 2) Purchase, import, pay all the taxes and fees, then pay to have it's emissions and safety brought to US code. This is INCREDIBLY expensive, but it can be done if you have the money. 3) Find a version of the car that is considered "technologically significant or important", and import it under the "show or display rules". Those vehicles are INCREDIBLY rare and very expensive, and there are only a few models that fall under that catagory. On top of that they are very expensive to begin with even if you find one. What's more, you can only drive it 2500 miles a year, until it hits the 25 year mark at which point it becomes exempt and see 1.
Batuhan Tilki i think he sold it because he wants to own an interesting car for a certain amount of time and make all kinds of content about it and then after a while sell it and do the same with another car. i think he has already decided when hes going to sell this gtr as well
Not the best sounding engines or exhaust on these things but certainly the car has the looks and the handling. Also is Jalopnik providing him these cars to review?
Prince David he bought this car, so no Jalopnik is not providing the car. But Im sure Mike Spinelli would provide him with a "superchips" if he asked for one in a new york accent..
I don't like the R34 alloys, they are slightly too large & make the car ride too high. Should definitely try & source some BBS wheels, 17 inch would look perfect.
Zerofightervi For US roads, it's probably better to have the high stance. It's what I notice most about driving 90s cars vs 80s... they had way more suspension travel back then, even if it was more primitive.
I just think it's a shame to have such a near standard R32 & not have more period wheels on it. I'm glad to hear Doug won't be ruining the look of it during his stint as a Skyline owner.
Has nothing to do with power, speed, or anything like that. The US has extremely strict safety and emission standards that the car wasn't designed to comply with. After 25 years a car can be legally imported. But saying it was prevented for sale in the US because it was too powerful or too fast sounds cooler than stating it wouldn't meet US FMVSS.
why does your camera sound like a gieger counter at first?
I think a lot of Go Pro Hero 3+'s have that problem.
+SoCalSupercars I don't think it's the camera, it's probably his case or his mount.
The car was imported from Chernobyl
cause he needed an upgrade
Doug I have owned one of these, if you really want to see what the acceleration is like from a standstill, hold the revs at 6500 and feed the clutch out. Just be ready to grab second gear! The 4wd is amazing at launching the car off the line, and it's not so hard on the clutch if you feed it out rather than dropping it. Enjoy!
So, the next video will be about what Nissan dealers say about servicing this car when they see it?
February +1 i wanna see a video of you showing up at a dealer and their reaction
February Doug Do this man this is a great idea.
February I was just about to ask this question.
i lived in quebec for a few years when it was legal to have R32's (they had a 15 year rule vs 25 in the USA). You had to know someone who was familiar with them and source parts from japan. It can get expensive real quick. The power steering hose for the HICAS (rear wheel steering) requires pulling the engine to replace. Amazing cars though!

That sounds like USA car mfg motto
Here in Australia, we have every second 17-19 yr old driving classic nissans like the skyline, and the silvia's.
Same in New Zealand
AtTheHorizonLine good for them, as long as they dont rice them out
yeah but for us p platers its not GTR's its NA skylines and some turbo silvias that are way above what they're worth cos they're decent fun turbocharged p plate cars, can't even drive a GTST r33 without full license hahaha
and almost all of them are scuffed. Dodgy mods done by backyard "mechanics" it's definitely hard to find a nice clean unmolested example.
in sydney there is a trend of civics
Wohoo
More exciting than a Ferrari 360?!
I always wanted a GT-R, now I really really want a GT-R :D
ahmedp800 Yeah, I'm not too sure about that Ferrari bit either. steve crenshaw Right back at you.
koopatroopa187 did you just say a money pit? Hahaha worse than a honda? Please explain that logic to me.
Marcus Riboni One is fun off the show room floor and the other is a 25 year old Nissan that requires a bunch of money to be thrown at it?
Love the reviews, rhd is about keeping your dominant hand on the wheel as most people are right handed
RegularCars needs to drive this.
MixtecoBlue your wish has been granted, he drove an r32
There is a huge lack of exhaust sound
SpotterJacob He should get a titanium exhaust!
SpotterJacob thats what any r.b sounds like without a proper equal length tubular manifold just search up 6 boost manfiold and any rb engine haha.
ChibiCh33 I know, but the RB sounds like sex with a titanium exhaust.
SpotterJacob Check my videos out for some nice exhaust sounds :)
6.0L Turbo LS engine
***** No, material doesn't have an effect on sound.
This is the first video I saw from Doug, and now he has a Carrera GT. I'm so happy for him.
Yup, Doug’s come a long way
tape up the badges and make a video of you asking people what kind of car they think it is. that would be pretty cool
Essentially, Douglas, it feels just like it should.
Gotta love that floating wagon wheel effect at 2:30 :D
4:21 still can't believe these used to be so cheap
Finally one GTR without the steering wheel on the passenger's side.
Wrong.
1:09 ... i have bigger break discs on my bike.
Paul CCraciun rear brakes are that size in most sports cars, it's the front brakes that'll have huge rotors. Not being a dick but its "disc brakes". Break discs is when you start throwing cds on the ground.
Harris P no their brake discs mate
ALL YOU ASSHATS NEED TO GET THE HELL OUTTA HERE BEFORE I KICK DOUG DEMUROS ASS UP AND DOWN THE STREET
glad to see the steering wheel is on the correct side. 🇬🇧
RHD is stupid as fuck. You should've changed to LHD ages ago. You are a pain in the ass of every people from other countries of Europe...
Tom Meiner actually roads we first designed thousands of years ago for horses to be on the left side, while in the u.s we drive in the right side of the road. So being on the left side and being RHD is normal and being LHD is weird. But I do agree that LHD is way easier and also most people are right handed anyways
Another great video, Doug! :D
I know your comment is 5 years old and you probably won't see my reply BUT..... Nice profile pic.
Doug DeMuro What you should do, is get upgraded 300z brakes put on the GTR to keep cost down, & improve stopping power. Do a full catless exhaust, upgrade the clutch & do a BPU so you're still using stock parts, but pushing a bit harder.
AFAIK he will sell it in a year to get another car, just like he did with his previous cars. So he'll probably keep it as it is to maintain the value.
What's the fun factor compared to the 360?
Gran Turismo
The only reason to drive a Ferrari is because it´s a Ferrari. ^^
If you want to drive a fast car with perfect quality you buy a Porsche. ;)
This thing made all the other cars look silly at the Bathurst 1000. 4wd 4ws and 600+hp in race trim it was ahead of its time.
WHEN YOU GET TO THE TOP
YOU HAVEN'T BEEN TO THE TOP
I hear guardrail scratching
R32 brakes should be exactly like the 300ZX twin turbo brakes. Only R33/R34 GT-Rs offered Brembos as the factory setup. Also the R32 GT-R doesn't have any factory oil coolers and thus suffers from high oil temps with prolonged track use.

Waited all day for this!
Time to get a lav mic buddy, so we can hear your voice and the engine without all that direct road rattle.
Never been a fan of Japanese cars, but wouldn’t say no to a Nissan GTR. One of the best looking cars out there.
I really don't like your face o your voice but there is something about your videos that makes me keep watching them so..... nice channel!!
The audio/video quality is ehhhh
Sarin Murlidar I was surprised, I have 100 subs and mine is better lol
+Street Speed 717 "100 subsc

Street Speed 717 haha watching old videos. 100 subs a year ago and look where you are now, badass.
WHOS THIS FAKE JAY LENO ASSHAT
interesting you compared this to the focus ST. As an ST owner, i'd love to compare these back to back. stock for stock. if you're ever in the Syracuse area let me know doug . Also, my name is on the list for the new RS. that would also be a fun comparison. in due time of course.

Super jealous, awesome car bud!
Doug was like "I don't have time for this review, I just want to drive this thing!"
Its a cult classic, a true icon. It would be very easy to over look any shortcomings as you know your driving something historically special.

Say what?
nice vid. liked b4 watching b/c i knew it was going to be good
Did u buy this from Japanese classics they have the exact same one for sale with the same shift know and all just curious
Jason O'Connell Yes, he did.
MotorWeek had a video of Japanese classics and the R32 and Doug's GTR was spotted in that video.
I just subscribed yesterday after watching the Hummer in the city video. I'm jealous of your wealth lol maybe when I'm 40 I'll have a couple 25+ year old imports...
im trying to import an1990 nissan gtr but the japanese classic dealership site doesnt have any atm, what other sites would you recommend
ebay
One of his other videos stated where he got the car from. Some import dealer that does this a lot.
25 years old still rocks! my country wont even let people import second cars at all....
That's an interesting shifter boot. It looks like it's carbon fibre fabric.
While I know that it is JDM Yo!, and that is awesome, but what about importing one that is left hand drive... like from our northern neighbors?
Geoff Hinkle Any LHD skylines you may have seen online have been converted.
just found your channel, awesome dude sub to you
you are a very good presenter!!!
Not really
Hey that's the mann center. Man I'd love taking pics of this car
Looks like fun to rip around Phila. How's it do on the Schuylkill
Please tell me you've replaced/are replacing the chrome Autozone washer nozzles?
They totally clash with your clip on boom mic.

The pedals configuration is the same
Hahahahahahaha you just made my day
Lol fuck no
Terrail Cunningham oh God I can't even imagine how fucking hard it would be to drive a car like that. Even if I could get used to an inverses pedal setup, just going back and forth from my RHD car to my LHD car would be a nightmare.

0:24 Dough the kind of guy that test drive an R-32 before selling U235 to Doc Brown.
look at that smile even with a stock 32r wait till he pushes numbers into that car.

There is a r34 vspec 2 nür that costs $71.000 and it has 45.000 km but it's super clean should I get one
It hasn't been like incredibly long since this time but it feels like ancient times already LOL.
At least Doug s got Ebay for the spares and a lot of cash from his job to maintain that beautiful ride
Now sink some money into it, Stock they are very tame to drive. Get it up to around the 300KW mark and you will love life. Will still be reliable but have a fair whack of go.

Nice.. You even got R34 rims on it.. keep them...

I think you would look good with a beard. Next video I'd love to see it ;).
A beard, a sleep apnea mask, a pair of aviator sunglasses and a hat with a hoodie on (hood up)
have you tried hitting boost yet? doesn't sound like it is..
I thought you couldn't import these things?
After the car is 25 years old
Not entirely true.
Ok... but how is it to drive compared to the 360 ?
great video
What happened to your Ferrari?
He sold it
why didn't he like it? Shady x
Batuhan Tilki i think he sold it because he wants to own an interesting car for a certain amount of time and make all kinds of content about it and then after a while sell it and do the same with another car. i think he has already decided when hes going to sell this gtr as well
oh ok that helps a lot lol thanks Vortexiii
Doug would you recommend trading a 2015 BMW 328i for a 91 skyline?
Wait, you don't have the giant yellow thing anymore?
He has both the GT-R and the Hummer
the Z32 300zx during the time was the Nissan to have.
So is this be legalize to be driven in the California state road and highway? Please let me know because I want one within a day or 2. Thanks
why is it that every video i watched about this car, the driver is giggling? It makes me want to try to drive it.
Just curious. What do you do for a living?
He is a writer for Jalopnik.
Not the best sounding engines or exhaust on these things but certainly the car has the looks and the handling. Also is Jalopnik providing him these cars to review?
Prince David He went to Virginia to buy this car.
Prince David he bought this car, so no Jalopnik is not providing the car. But Im sure Mike Spinelli would provide him with a "superchips" if he asked for one in a new york accent..
Prince David Well you obviously haven't heard a decently tuned RB26dett engine with a good exhaust... aka the sounds of heaven.
Underpantsniper Oh ok thanks I just get confused because it sounds like he bought it for writing articles on the website.
sunnydaytoride +100
This and the 2JZ are still my favorite sounding motors
Yo, can we see a chassis plate. I think you might have a GTS.
I love the r32’s. Don’t know why. Just do
Would like to see the Doug Score for this car
I don't like the R34 alloys, they are slightly too large & make the car ride too high.
Should definitely try & source some BBS wheels, 17 inch would look perfect.
Zerofightervi For US roads, it's probably better to have the high stance. It's what I notice most about driving 90s cars vs 80s... they had way more suspension travel back then, even if it was more primitive.
I just think it's a shame to have such a near standard R32 & not have more period wheels on it.
I'm glad to hear Doug won't be ruining the look of it during his stint as a Skyline owner.
This R34 wheels looks horrible on this car
I think it's clean 🤔
I love skylines
Make a video comparing the GTR vs Ferrari
Did you ever remove the AWD fuse?
btw im a huge 911 turbo fan
Why is this car such a issue. I have herd it was prevented for sale in the US markets for a long time, can not see why
Has nothing to do with power, speed, or anything like that. The US has extremely strict safety and emission standards that the car wasn't designed to comply with. After 25 years a car can be legally imported. But saying it was prevented for sale in the US because it was too powerful or too fast sounds cooler than stating it wouldn't meet US FMVSS.
no shit its been well maintained.
Your used to RHD matey, I'd be the same with LHD
the only thing i saw here was, a man in love for his car, and when i look at the mirror i see a man in love for his car...
No body roll. No body lean.
... as the whole car is leaning over as he goes round and round.
How's gas mileage?
Do you have a crossfire car review ?
honest question..
the throttle and brake and clutch pedals in the same place as a left hand drive car????
Yes.
southpaw117 cool because that would be a bit tough to get used to 👌✌
You should get some coilovers
Judging from his facial expression it seems like he is accelerating more than his car. :D
I love my r32 gtst 2.0 power ❤️
I didn't know John C. Reilly owned a Skyline...
Have you ever driven the all wheel steering one?
This one has the HiCAS, but it's disabled.
R32 was very advanced for it time even advance to some cars came out 12years later
R32 GTR has 4 wheel steering after 80kph
