Excellent interview, thank you! When the LP Heaven and Hell came out we really were happy with the direction the band was going in: fresh and powerful. Already Rainbow fans we also looked forward to Dio's interpretation of Ozzy-era songs. We saw this show at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on July 23rd 1980. The venue was right off the Pacific Ocean and was used primarily for Speedway motorcycle racing. It was a dirt track with a grandstand the whole place was GA, a $10.50 ticket and around 5500 people attended. We stood on the Tony side not too far away, as we got there early. I remember getting a hat and the 3/4 sleeve black and white jersey.
I'll skip Shakin' Street and get right into the headliners. BOC was on first that night and they were awesome and majestic also come to mind. They played BOC on the LA radio stations so we enjoyed the set. But as loud as they were, Sabbath was next level loud. We just loved watching Bill Ward play he was a monster! I felt Dio was well-received, however when Tony went into the opening riffs of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath we thought Dio would sing it. It didn't happen- just an instrumental. All in all, a stellar show and that began the first of many, many RJD shows for me.

Saw that tour in Boston, MA. I was 15. Black Sabbath was my life (kind of still is lol). I didn't know much of BoC except for what was played on the radio. I wanted to know more of their songs so I bought "Some Enchanted Evening".. still have it. Man that's an incredible album. made me a big fan. Dio was good but it just wasn't the same without Ozzy, especially when he sang an Ozzy Sabbath song (which they had to being that they only had one album "Heaven and Hell" at the time). It was kind of a mixed bag on how people reacted to Dio.. I loved H&H but I didn't like him singing the original Sabbath songs. He wasn't the right fit imo. Personally these days I think he's the most overrated singer of all time. Sounds the same in every song from every band that he was in. He also seemed to have a problem with everyone. Wouldn't surprise me if most of the delays were because of him. Anyway,, with Ozzy forming a band with Randy Rhoads (saw them twice), Sabbath with Gillan (now that was a fun concert), all of the great music that was coming, Man it was the best time to be a young Metal fan. The best.
