  • Comparison of my Ludwig Black Beauty with Tama zinc die cast hoops vs Ludwig stock steel triple flanged. The difference is way bigger than I thought! Tried to get the tuning exact, but didnt work out perfectly - but I still think its a valuable comparison.
The die cast hoop gives a lot of focus, it shortens the natural head sustain a lot and there is this meaty, thick, dark immediate shell response from a rim shot, which adds a lot of pressure and power to the snare hit. Definitely great for heavier music! I also think the aftermath of a rimshot sounds more hollow compared to triple flanged, a little bit like hitting a gong. Maybe thats the shortened head sustain vs more pronounced shell activation, which leads to this effect.
Triple flanged produces a lot of overtones, endless sustain and sounds a lot more open with much less of the shell activating on a rim shot. All been written a million times, but I really never found good back to back sound examples. Here it is :)
Tuning: 316 top & 395 reso (perfect 3s) on an Evans Power Center Reverse Dot with an Evans Haze 300 reso.
