  • My Ludwig Black Beauty is probably my favourite snare, but I also really love the small 13x7 G-Maple! I set them at similar tuning for a comparison, usually I run it a little higher! It has a lot of attack and cuts through any rehearsal, very pleasant, wooden sustain, very easy to tune - its the only non-metal drum I ever play!
Chance are, you know how a Black Beauty sounds, so you'll be able to understand better where to put the Tama LGM137 in this recording! ;)

The Tama SLP 13x7 maple has been my main snare for over ten years. I keep trying different snares but keep coming back to it.

The Tama is cool, but the Black Beauty is simply the goat. You can clearly hear how it effortlessly carves its spot in a full drum mix, even without processing. Superb attack.

hey fabio, fully agree! although the tama also cuts through a mix, the black beauty also lingers between hits in a beautiful way. the BB has this 3-way sound: initial rim attack with a direct, thick and dark shell & wire response which forms that initial fatness ... and then after a short amount of time, its blends over into that crystal clear, dark shell sustain that lives between hits and reminds the listener who is the boss! 😁 I use the Tama usually for "sleep token"-like high pitched stuff, which doesnt suit the black beauty. This comparison is a little unfair, because its the BB prime medium frequency, whereas its in the lowest useful spectrum of the Tama.

@@simongrossjohann Yes, exactly, they're indeed working in two completely different frequency spectrums, so they definitely shouldn't be "compared" too much. And wow, that's a spot-on description of the Black Beauty's sound. Guess I'll steal it, too accurate ahahahah.

I have both snares, the Tama is an excellent snare, one of my favorites. The Black Beauty however, is the greatest snare of all time, my absolute favorite snare.

Love maple, but the attack the black beauty has is something special.

I have the Tama SLP Big Black Steel Snare and holy hell does it smack. I love the BB but I bought the SLP blind and it is a killer snare. Always get compliments on it from folks. I usually run a P77 on top set to a fairly medium-high tuning and then a nearly fully cranked bottom (probably still the stock head honestly).
It thuds, it smacks, it pings, and it cracks, but it doesn't do anything slightly too much more than the other. Thanks for the video!

Both sound great. What batters are you using?

evans power center reverse dot on both, it adds some fatness, mildly takes some attack brightness and reduces ring a little, but it still sounds open as it is a single ply. somebody once said "ambassador with balls" and it puts it very well (he meant remo cs, but thats the same thing from another brand)!
