They all sound very nice. It's pretty crazy that the starphonic is only 464€. In comparison ludwig is 777€ and yamaha is 609€. The starphonic is one of only two snare drum lines that tama still makes in japan and it has tama high quality hardware like the linear throw-off which they also use on their top of the line star reserve series snares. Also starphonic aluminium is seamless shell like the ludwig but yamaha isn't if i remember right

Nice video, I have had the Ludwig and the starphonic. Quality snares. The Pearl sensitone would have been a nice addition.

You can actually distinguish them when you trained your ears to it and experimenting with your snares, the supraphonic has a high pitched attack that's specific to the supras (Probably the chrome coating). Tama on the other hand as their signature sound (I own a few) which partly comes from the shallow snare beds which he did notice in the video. The Yamaha was recognizable by the die cast hoops which restricts the shell a lot more and make more of a ting sound than a snap while doing rimshots.

I thought the Tama was 1 ludwig 2 and Yamaha 3. Also have to say the 2nd was my favorite. With out looking. Pretty cool way to just decide off of the sound and feel. Not just name brand.

Wish I did the test blind too! I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to guess correctly either. They all sound great, but I liked the Ludwig the best.

@@do8671 Niether, it is just the way it is, die cast hoops makes a snare sound with a little more less overtones, and standard hoops makes it sound little more open, and it is easier for playing, you dont need to hit it harder to get a sound out of it

to be fair the Yamaha also has aluminium cast hoops, which didn't feel as rigid as regular zinc cast hoops. I also was surprised while tuning the snares for this video how 'soft' they feel and sound, somewhere in between regular cast hoops and triple flange hoops //Lukas

You guys should do ludwig snare comparasion. At least Black beuty, Supra and Acrolite. ANd then maybe tama starphonic's :)

My first instinct turned out to be correct, though I couldn't account for minor differences in the tuning snare wires/mounting, I have heard each separately previously. Although my current bias/want for has been the Tama model (which I thought was more mid-focused than the Ludwig 'open' sound), based on these samples my preference would probably be for the Yamaha, due to consistency across volume levels (given: there was a bit more to go on with the playing sample)! Thanks very much for this.

Next time throw in the Pearl Sensitone Aluminum snare. They are very high quality and much lower in price.

Btw which snare drum has the best hardware in your opinion? I think that ludwig falls short on that category but which of the yamaha and tama has better hardware. Tama has 1.6mm hoops but they have no holes in them so they are pretty stiff and yamaha has 3mm aluminum die cast hoops. Which do you prefer?

I think THe Tama has the more Robust Hardware .. Followed By the Yamaha .... I own these two myself .... Ludwig has had their issues with throw offs and Hardware My Black Beauty has the p88 throw off which was an improvement

As I have the Tama Starphonic and wanted to make some cleaning I took off all the hardware from the shell. The hardware is really heavy and strong. But than I was shocked about how thin and light is the shell. I really now have the fear to put on the heavy hardware as I am afraid that the shell warps.
