I am a French Republican and like a very large majority of French people I have respect for Napoleon. those who say he was a tyrant do not understand the history of France
Ironically, I'm French too and every history teacher except the english one hated Napoleon. Whilst it's true that Napoleon did many great things, he also did many terrible things (slavery and sexism comes to mind, sadly). So, I wouldn't love Napoleon, but I wouldn't hate him either. He was a leader that inspired and conquered, terrorised and subjugated.
Well Napoleon IS a tyrant, however a tyrant doesnt necessarly mean everything he did was bad, he doesnt really deserve sympathy for his worst decision but respect? The man managed to crush the balance of power in europe in a single decade, managed to reach and enter moscow and btw unlike the polish who were closer and the reich who had much more advanced technology and supply (and couldntt even occupy the city in the end), yet France was on the other side of europe with "allies" that werent fully loyal, a second front in spain, and with crappy logistic, like russia made sure not to leave any supply and bringing supply from france to russia on horseback is not ideal

For those who do not understand why this song speaks of a republic while being the anthem of the Empire, it is quite simply because in reality the republic exists while being a monarchy. Napoleon I was "the Protector Emperor of the Republic" or "the Emperor of the Republic."
This how they sold it at the time for a while (before the term "republic" be banished before the end of the first empire), but modern historiography rightfully consider the republic over when Napoleon proclamed himself emperor.
The lyrics as well as the song also precede the Empire, being initially used as a companion piece to La Marseillase, before becoming the National Anthem since the first one was seen as subversive

This song was composed in 1794, during the First Republic. It clearly was inspired by the levée en masse, when the people were mobilized to fight the feudal monarchies invading France ("La République nous appelle!" "The Republic is calling on us!"). Napoleon may have coopted it, like he did the tricolor, but it clearly does not celebrate the First Empire. It is a revolutionary song of the Republic!

I am a French Republican and like a very large majority of French people I have respect for Napoleon. those who say he was a tyrant do not understand the history of France
Bien dit
Ironically, I'm French too and every history teacher except the english one hated Napoleon.
Whilst it's true that Napoleon did many great things, he also did many terrible things (slavery and sexism comes to mind, sadly).
So, I wouldn't love Napoleon, but I wouldn't hate him either.
He was a leader that inspired and conquered, terrorised and subjugated.
ruclips.net/video/S9xaoIMMcd8/видео.html
Well Napoleon IS a tyrant, however a tyrant doesnt necessarly mean everything he did was bad, he doesnt really deserve sympathy for his worst decision but respect? The man managed to crush the balance of power in europe in a single decade, managed to reach and enter moscow and btw unlike the polish who were closer and the reich who had much more advanced technology and supply (and couldntt even occupy the city in the end), yet
France was on the other side of europe with "allies" that werent fully loyal, a second front in spain, and with crappy logistic, like russia made sure not to leave any supply and bringing supply from france to russia on horseback is not ideal
It's funny that he did many things against women and slave's rights but he gived to his sisters some crowns😂

The lyrics as well as the song also precede the Empire, being initially used as a companion piece to La Marseillase, before becoming the National Anthem since the first one was seen as subversive

it is said that France is among the countries who had the best war leaders of all times : Clovis, Charlemagne, Phillipe Auguste, Bertrand du Guesclin, Joan of Arc, Lafayette, Napoleon, Charles de Gaulle... and I probably forgot others
Louis XIV fought against Europe many times and won, which lead to place his cousin in Spain throne. Phillipe 1er invaded England in 1066. Richelieu managed to restore France's dignity after the bad ending of François 1er
