  • VOCES8 sings William Byrd's sumptuous setting of 'O Saluters Hostia' at the VOCES8 Centre in London.
    TEXT
    O salutaris Hostia,
    Quae caeli pandis ostium:
    Bella premunt hostilia,
    Da robur, fer auxilium.
    TRANSLATION

    Who expandest the door of heaven,
    Hostile armies press,
    Give strength; bear aid.

    Everything Voces8 does is done to a very high standard - but this recording is beyond exceptional. It's the usual clarity and perfect pitch we expect from Voces8, but what strikes me here is how intensely the singers listen to each other and know exactly which part(s) need to be emphasized at precisely the right time. Just gorgeous.

    In the midst of vicious persecution by the Tudor state, Catholics in hiding still had holy communion, and set to such glorious music as this. Thanks to Voces8 for yer another simply excellent rendition.

      But the “Tudor state” under Mary also heavily persecuted the Protestants. It was a great time of change. many of the composers managed to write for whichever side was in power. This same composer, Byrd, wrote “O Lord make thy servant Elizabeth our Queen”. She was Protestant.

      I could be wrong, but I think it may be a bit naïve to think they used complex choral pieces like this in secret house masses. The idea would surely have been to keep things quiet and undetectable.

    • @mcjgsk1305
      @mcjgsk1305 5 месяцев назад

      „Mary heavily persecuted Protestants”? You are joking, right? 300 that’s maximum historians are claiming for her whole reign.
      But only in Norfolk in one year of 1569 more than 1200 Catholics were executed during the reign of Elisabeth. There’s no comparison at all, only anti-Catholic propaganda fairytales.

      I see your point, but there's not really anywhere else they could have been done, at least in England, since celebrating a Catholic Mass publicly there was illegal for most of Byrd's adult life. Mind you, the houses where these secret masses were done weren't houses in town where the neighbors could hear; they were the country houses of nobility or other landowners.

    • @warden330
      @warden330 5 месяцев назад +1

      He was actually court musician to Queen Elizabeth, and his music was published by him. There was nothing secret or illegal here. It was the celebration of the Mass according to Roman rites that was illegal.

      Was so modern anmutet, verdankt sich dem ganz alten Primat des linearen melodischen Denkens in mehreren, selbstständig geführten Stimmen vor der vertikalen, also harmonischen Ausrichtung der Komposition. Auf diese Weise erscheinen im vorliegenden Stück ziemlich unbekümmert Querstände zuhauf, ganz so wie in der ars nova, also bei den ersten Gehversuchen der Polyphonie, sehr hochmittelalterlich. Selbst Bach als spätbarocker Komponist ist nicht frei davon (z.B. WtKl II, Präl. E-dur, Schlusskadenz, T 53 Sopran-cis2 gegen Tenor-c1 am Ende der Zählzeit 1), geht damit aber viel behutsamer um, indem er Querstände nicht auf den betonte(re)n Zählzeiten erklingen lässt.
      Viel gewagter zeigt Bach sich übrigens etwa im Präludium b-moll des WtKl I, wenn er Takt 2, Zählzeit 3 einen opulenten Vorhalt präsentiert, interpretierbar als ein Ineinander von b-moll- und F-dur-Akkord, wobei, bedingt durch die Stimmführung, c1 und des2 heftig als kleine None aufeinanderprallen (neben drei weiteren Dissonanzen in diesem fünfstimmigen Gesamtklang). Allein die Vorbereitung und Auflösung dieser Stelle nehmen der harmonischen Brisanz des Akkordes zum Teil ihre Schärfe. Aber man spiele ihn einfach mal isoliert repetitiv à la Stockhausens Klavierstück IX-Beginn …

    What artistry on all fronts! To me, Byrd captures the feeling of "hostile armies" exactly in all the conflicting harmonies. Expanding "the door of heaven" - isn't that just like expanding what we expect from harmony to include the truly false relations? And as someone else pointed out, the whole matter of oppression of Roman Catholicism; the anguish of persecution, means that the "aid" at the end, the resolution, only comes at the very end. Conflicting harmonies right up to a few bars before the end. And then there's the rendition … what can I say, it has been said many times by others … but what I will add is that you need that absolute clarity, that beautiful precision, to convey the dissonance, to be transparently clear that there are no mistakes here, just pure art. Voces8 have that purity, clarity, transparency that allows the art of the music to shine through with such heart-rending beauty.
