- VOCES8 sings 'Sicut Cervus’ by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina in the VOCES8 Centre in London.
TEXT (Psalm 42:1)
Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum,
ita desiderat anima mea ad te, Deus.
TRANSLATION
As the hart panteth after the water brooks,
so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
I don't think there is a vocal ensemble who can touch VOCES8. To everything they sing, they bring absolute perfection and sheer beauty.
I totally agree
totally agree and will add that the rate at which they add to their repertoire is really impressive.

it's hard to imagine Palestrina not smiling.
My Bible verse of the day was the scripture that inspired this piece. Psalm 42:1. Took me back to my college days at Virginia Wesleyan when the ensemble I was in sang this. Just beautiful. Sing to the Lord!
I could listen to this for all eternity. By the grace of God I will.
My feeling exactly! I was instantly transported to Heaven! I mean it! I'm a professional pianist and I love all genres. Today I was listening to Mozart, Latin music, swingin' jazz and ragtime. And now I turned to this, and it carries me away!
This song is truly divine - Palestrina is a master and Sicut Cervus a masterpiece... All Glory to God forever!!!
This is the first piece of choral music I learnt as part of an ensemble. It was 2007 and I sang Tenor I. This song introduced me to Palestrina and changed my life. Thank you Voces8 for reigniting one of the most magnificent and important time in my life. ❤️🙏🏾
May I ask what voice you are singing now, bro?
Me too in 1972
Not my very first, but one of the first where I really felt part of something bigger than classmates singing a song. I was singing bass 1 (Bari) in 1993
Beautiful. Serene. Vintage Palestrina. Sung perfectly. Voices blended seamlessly. VOCES8 never ceases to amaze. Bravo!!
It's absolutely Heavenly!
This work of Palestrina is absolutely beautiful sung, in tune and well phrased. Voces8 is probably the most perfect singer ensemble ever.
VOCES8 really captures the beauty of the High Renaissance in this piece! Palestrina's highly refined style is heard clearly.
Einfach nur wunderschön. Meine Freude an diesem Tag.
I had never listened to Palestrina if it were not for VOCES8, I swear. They have opened my eyes and my ears.
I’VE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS ♥️
Same here!
0:29 this (the part when tenors sing “cer”) is my favorite part of the song. The harmonies of this note (or I guess two notes for the soprano part) are just so breathtakingly beautiful. I get goosebumps every time I hear it.
1:53 is my second favorite part. Same concept as my favorite part.
Beautiful. One of the most sublime experiences in my life was singing this piece in St. Peter’s basilica in Vatican City a few years ago.
"He who sings in prayer prays twice". (Padre Lisboa, Salesian - CDH, Ponte Nova-MG).
If my memory serves me right, and do correct me if I am wrong, this statement was likewise, once given by St Augustine of Hippo.
it would be nice if it were true, but it is not.
for the context of how and when even religious singing is NOT prayer acceptable to God see Isaiah chapter 1 verse 10 ff
and more explicitly, actually referring to "worship music" Amos 5: 22-24
and also look for the original derivation of the word cant - meaning hypocrisy

Isaiah beginning of chapter 1 is literally just talking about the corruption in the ancient city of Judah, it has nothing to do with singing.
Amos 5 is talking specifically about God's warning and calls for repentance towards the ancient Israel, which again, is not specific to singing and is just God saying even their singing will be ignored if the corruption persist.
Let me remind you, the entire book of Psalms by the old King David is literally prayer in music and lyrics. Let me also remind you the Mother of God, Mary herself burst in singing (The Magnificat) upon the Annunciation from the Angel Gabriel.
Context is key, not blind reading.
Voces8 never cease to beguile with their technical mastery and sheer dedication to a historically informed performance. All the best for 2024!
Exquisite in both balance and tempo, allowing the voices to blend into a beautiful tapestry of sound. I have sung this many times (USA), but find most choirs here take too fast a tempo, and the beautiful interweaving of the parts is lost. Yours is just right. Thanks.
A perfect performance of one of my favorite anthems to hear or sing. Thank you.
I wish I could click like again every time I come back and listen to this.
Oh yay! Been waiting for this on RUclips!!!! Palestrina writes the best magical moments for altos. I'm always sad when someone leaves VOCES8 but so impressed that each new iteration of the ensemble reworks and balances and blends while still keeping the glorious sounds and details. Bravo!
Oberstes Niveau!
Sublime. Voces8 makes my heart swell (in a good way) and makes my soul rise within me. This was beauty defined.
Grazie !
Davvero! Bravissimi!
Absolutely exquisitely sung with perfection and incredible sensitivity. One of my favorite pieces!!! Bravo!!! Thk you!
Thank you, this is just lovely and exceedingly well done. VOCES8… keeping art alive one composition at a time and in so doing, keeping us alive.
Be still, my heart! Exquisite. 😊
My favorite group singing my favorite piece!
I waited so long for the deer sung by Voces8 - and was not let down!
Wow...perfection...I call this "clear-air music", not only does it feel like there's clear air under your shoes when you're singing it, but Voces 8 take me to a place of serenity that's almost out of this world. Thanks again.
Simply one if the most heavenly pieces I've heard.
Thank you for always dedicating great care to the correct pronunciation of Latin. Much appreciated, in addition to your singing mastery.
This is my favorite piece of the entire Early Music repertoire. Thank you ❤
I wish I could hear them live. A better world, in our ears.
So sublime. Thank you for bringing back memories of singing in our local chamber choir, now sadly defunct.
Absolutely stunning!❤❤❤❤ I have been trying to learn this piece and listening to your version has made it a million times easier. God bless you
Great rendition of one of the 350(!) or so motets by the greatest composer who ever graced the planet.
A gem of unrivaled beauty. Palestrina never imagined it could be so good.
Dr.Fernando Rivas-Burattini.
🤝👏👏💐💐🙏✝️🙏🇨🇱🇨🇱.
Resurrexit sicut dixit ✝️🙏✝️
Voces8 will always do it right! None better, and I can't think of any equals, for that matter.
Such peaceful and beautiful music by Palestrina absolutely wonderfully performed thank you WOCES8🍃
This is angelic.
Thank you so much ✨💕
I think they sing this in heaven. Wonderful!
This is one of the most serene choral piece I love and I sang bass
The words are from Psalm 42: "As the hart longeth for flowing streams, so longeth my soul for thee...."
One weeps with the realization of this infinite beauty.............
I am a choir singer, rather used to be.
I bow to those 8 young people.
Never give up what you enjoy.
Oh you've so much to listen to. I recommend you listen to their William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons!
Now that’s my VOCES8. My angels.
I love your videos and greatly appreciate your sharing them. My spirit thanks you all!
Really like the tempo and pacing here. It's hard to find a recording of this that doesn't either drag on too slow, or speed things up too much. Nicely done!
Whouah !
Je suis au ciel, entouré d'anges.
Merci.
Wow! I feel like I had been waiting years to hear a Voces8´s rendition of Sicut Cervus, and it didn´t disappoint. It is up there with the Cambridge Singers´ rendition.
Ohh, such beautiful piece of music! I was missing your guys, thanks for the upload!
Thank you for the high school memories as a madrigal!
If I am listening to choral music on youtube and Voces 8 has a rendition, it is always the bestm perfect and sends me to another universe. Was blessed to see them in concert a few years ago.
Finally!! I had long wished for Voces8 to perform Sicut Cervus (which was one of the earliest Choral hymns I was exposed to). Beautiful, as always - moving despite having heard it so many times all these years, and delivered in such a silky smooth blend of voices. Bravo! That final Ad Te Deus brought home by the Soprano singers is just.. perfect. Like cool water to the parched soul, to borrow the metaphor.
PS: Nice to see so many others in the comments who had waited for exactly this piece by Voces :D
Bravo! Always as one voice. Magnificent
Sehr schön, danke. ❤🇩🇪
Divine! Bravo!
One of my favorite pieces sung by one of the best choirs I know
This was the very first polyphony I ever did 19 years ago as a high school freshman…it remember it like yesterday and it’s never gotten old to sing or listen to ❤️💗❤️💗❤️💗
I needed this one today guys ❤️
GOSH I LOVE THIS PIECE. You all did such a magnificent job at blending and making sure each part was heard, bravo!!
Immediately, the best version on RUclips. Perfection.
One of my favorite pieces, and you sing it so beautifully!
Every one of the voices is perfectly in balance.
“Deyyyyus” at the end 😢 but honestly it’s amazing and FONTes was everything I hoped it would be and more ❤
Yes, they're not so accurate when singing in Latin.
MAGNIFIQUE ! vous êtes géniaux ! ! Bravo à vous tous ......
Mamma mia! It seems to be in paradise. And the basses are incredible! ❤❤❤
Can't stop listening to this! Amazing! Palestrina forever.
I can only add my gratitude and admiration to that of many others.
Well this just made me melt. Why, oh why isn't this on Spotify?
Sublime , thank you !!🤗😇
Gorgeous. A masterpiece from Palestrina, and incredible well executed.
Wow. I'd been looking for the most beautiful Sicut Cervus since I was in college. Now, I am at peace. ❤
Well now, wasn't that something. Complete with birdsong at the very end. The universe approved!
Flawless as always, and the new bass is settling in very well. It must be very intimidating to become a member of the best chamber choir in the world.
Magnificent❤
I don’t hear a tip of breathe-in sound during long phrases…so natural and amazing
Einfach himmlisch ❤❤❤
Palestrina.Beautiful!!!!
Hermoso.
Gorgeous. Makes me wish that you had included the second part.
So beautiful! Your voices inspire me and motivate me to really try my best to sing it nicely.
Thank you for this wonderful moment, it's a real delight for our ears.
Beautiful and elegant as expected. Anyone notice the lovely bird sound that can be heard as the final phrase dies away?
Fa venire i brividi. ❤❤❤
What a beautiful psalm to wake on a Sunday morning
I can't even express how vindicated I felt when I heard the D natural at 2:24 in the tenor line
Catholicism is so beautiful. Just wow ❤
Palestrina was admitted to the Sistine Chapel in 1555...the choir that performs at all papal functions and ceremonies . And yet he was dismissed by Pope Paul IV for being married!
It has relaxed my dropping nerves!!!!!!!!!!!
Never ever disappointed. Thank you.
I have just compared this to another rendition on RUclips.
I must say that yours is, by far, the more sensitive and prayerful.
Bravo VOCES8, bravo Andrea!
Intervalos pensados pra fazer o sensitivo acordar para a piedade, amor, honra, paz realização!
Belo, muito belo
