Yep. Quake was in the back of my mind for years. I had played it and knew about it, but was a Doom diehard fan. I loved playing every mod and wad for Doom 2 that had ever realeased. Somehow I found my way over to Quake again after all these years and I have to say.... this is my favorite FPS of all time, even compared to modern games which I love.
Haha it was new 27 years ago, I remember when I first played it back then (when it really challenged most PCs with its "advanced" 3D graphics). :) Nice to discover the secret levels on your own, and super nice that people are still discovering and playing this game today. Online multiplayer was where it was really great, though, but I'm not sure that many people play it any more, mostly they moved to Quake Live or whatever else. It was such a great, huge community at the time, with probably thousands of servers around the world, many full of players.
I agree this game without a doubt will always be the best, i prefer it rather than the others in my opinion its so nostalgic and plays more smoother even after so many years and the replayable levels never get old, finding a few secrets here and there that i had never seen in my old playthroughs so thats just really something to see now :p
@@ZimmerBrayo The original Quake also birthed really the first competitive online leagues (Clan Ring etc.), pro gaming tournaments (PGL season 1 was in 1998) and truly pro gamer (Thresh, who won John Carmack's Ferrari in 1997). You can still see a lot of the "demos" of these tournaments here on RUclips. (We used to download the .dem files and run them in the game itself, or for QuakeWorld they were .qwd/.qwz.) QuakeWorld was a revolution in online gaming, with the first client-side prediction that made it actually playable even on an analog modem connection (33kbs). Also the speed running is probably some of the most entertaining to watch of any game. (Quake Done Quick.)
@@ModusVivendiMedia Ill admit it is pretty refreshing to see, even back then the speed and movement was phenomenal to see, seen a few 1v1 tournaments there myself, seems it used to be pretty big around that time, even more so whats mildly interesting are some of the quake spreedruns, always has me on the edge of my chair, including some of the well known speedrunners, hate to leave out any.
I have edited the config file so my player walks at normal human speed and run at the same speed of a death night coming after me while swinging his sword. This gives me the thrill I’m looking for while playing Q1 after all these years
Man that actually sounds like such fun may give this a go when i can i had recently installed quake again but the older version when it had came out in 1996 so its the same way it was back then, so goddamn fun man
You missed well of wishes with a special fish. This secret level is my favorite one. It is relatively compact with plenty of enemies it brings me the doom vibes most of all the levels. Also after shooting all the gargoyle heads you can find the secret room in one of dead knights alcoves. It does not count as regular secret and there are only the initials "TC" and "TW" for Theresa Chasar and Tim Willits.
Where is a new level ? I can see only the original episodic level E2M3 then continues to secret level E2M7. Both maps had been aging for almost 30 years now for they came with the first release of the game.
They are making a new Quake game in heard. I have a feeling it's going to be more close to this than the Strogg direction. Quake champions was more in the style of Quake 1 with the theme and level design. (The new ones)
nonono, you're doing it all wrong.... you skip the knight, dodge and anger the ogre, dodge his first grenade, get hit by the second and use the double ogre grenade jump to jump up on the ledge above the doorway and up to the quad damage, bhop to last corridor, kill the knight, dodge the other + ogre and finish in 21sec.
@@ZimmerBrayo yep, it has the initials of Tim Willits and his sister Theresa Chasar, fun fact: he also listed his sister as a co-author on ultimate doom's e4m5

What a game , I remember finding this level :) ,each episode has its own secret level
awh cool i had no idea haha
Ziggurat Vertigo was my favorite secret level
Vertigo is the best, though many hate it, but The Wind Tunnels is a close second
I never thought I would love Quake 1 more than DOOM, this game is almost perfect for me.
Play it with a couple friends in coop at nightmare difficulty. I remember the fear and terror a shambler struck into our party ;-)

What Quake has that Doom does not is existential dread. The mood is super dark and drenched in fear. The NIN soundtrack is frightening all by itself.
yap Quake>Doom
Quake 1 is good but i like Doom more by a small bit. Quake 1 could use more enemy sound effects

I often forget where the secret exits are, and just happened to come across them again accidentally when playing through again.
What?!? You can get to the E2M7 teleporter without going through the Well of Wishes secret?!?
This is all new to me ;D
Many secrets have alternative paths. 2 on E1M1.

New level for him, since it’s a secret level that’s quite easy to miss. On my hard run this was the only secret level I forgot to play.
Started with Quake1 on Mplayer now Quake3 on retro server.
You missed the dop fish
😭😭😭 I knowww, the poor little fishy!!!
Remember this being one of my more favorite CTF maps
You could've save that yellow armor. You would've got it as you left.
True actually that would have had been a much smarter move :D
What's your keybinding for host_framerate?)
Im not sure, i had uninstalled the game a bit ago ill look into it and ill let you know as soon as i can :)
