Prisons require clear lines so that you can see an approach or an escape for some distance. Trees would be cut down for up to the effective fire range of the rifle utilized. Something close to 500 yards depending on the rifle platform, and the skill level. An unscalable wall would be used if the distances couldn't be utilized. This is why prisons are not built within city limits anymore. They are often built on the outside of the city limits and can be seen for miles. Also jails are for sentences for 1 year or less, prisons are for sentences of more than 365 days.

It's really nice seeing all the bikelanes in the city! Also, in the Netherlands we have quite a lot of biketunnels crossing underneath roads, usually with bigger roads. So that might be a solution in some places. Within the cities we don't really prioritize cars at all, cyclists and pedestrians are considered equal, or even more important than them. And roundabouts. Lots of roundabouts lol. It's fun to see the difference
I took a walk today and saw the exact foliage you used to cover up terrain next to stairs that went up a hill. Only right next to the stairs, so obviously planted, insane!
FWIW: In most of Europe it's illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk, unless you're on a kiddie bike (so basically only small kids may use the sidewalk for biking) and if there is a bike path you HAVE to use it and in some cases can be fined if you ride anywhere else. That said, every country has its own regulation, like how and whether you're allowed to ride on paths shared with pedestrians differ between countries, but in general pedestrians have the right of way. Also be aware that this game is made in Finland and most of its systems are a mix between European and American principles
This might sound odd, but one of my favorite things that you do in your builds is the city tour... Would you be willing to consider creating a standalone episode of any of your properties that would just be a long, meandering city tour? Would anyone else be interested in this? Just a thought. Thank you so much for your content. 🙂
He did something similar back in Bluffside Crossing, where one episode was just a first-person POV bus ride across the entire city. It was fascinating to see everything at human scale for a change.
@@harambae7014 yeah that one was cool. I thought he would make more standalone like that one, it was really cool to recognize some places from the bus POV.
I would like to thank you for the awsome work of these Tutorial Series. I am an architect and urban planner for my self and appreciate the mix of humor and knowlege in these videos. Keep up the good work, greeting s from Germany.
Great video! Personal Recommendation: Changing “Monument Park” to “Monument Circle” would match the park the park more as it is a circle and in real life I’ve personally seen some parks named “… Circle” if it’s in the shape of a circle.
Thanks to you me and a growing list of friends have now gotten into Skylines! Kudos to you and all of the work you put into to teach folks like me and my friends and in's and out of the game
38:10 I think something that is often (but not always!) overlooked is the spacing of the junctions. You can see the vans stopping once the short segment fills up, even though the light is still green. Maybe a one way couplet would work better around the monument?
You building that prison reminded me of when this DLC first came out and I put the prison right next to the dump and accidentally started poisoning all of the criminals in the city
Because of you, i just bought cities skyline park life/industries/mass traffic /campus on steam ! You are doing such a great video . Thanks you for your work 😊
Another great video! You should put in a ferry stop near the tourism district where you cut that road off, or on the beach side, maybe that will help with traffic going through the neighborhood.
Talking about biking lanes in industry. Actually, in some huge petrochemical industrial complexes, you can find work bicycles for employees to travel within the facility. Hey, Merry Christmas! Praying the you and your family are much blessed in the coming year.
Rather than closing that through road in front of the planned casino. I hope you just connect it back and make 2 new bus loop (1 from downtown transit center to casino, circle park, and ferry; another one is one loop for both the suburbs sprawl to connect to the other bus loop and some commercial in the area). Another thing is change the sub connection to the casino to include stop on forest park and another one between the ferry and circle park.
I live in Wisconsin too in the Fox Cities. There are a couple of prisons here you can see close to the highway as well. One near I-41 which is Oshkosh Correctional Institution, I think it's Wisconsin's largest prison. And in Green Bay, they have the Green Bay Correctional Institution off of hwy 172. I guess people in Wisconsin like to see theirs. 😆😆😆
As a Dutchy i LOVED the bikelanes. Instantly overused it. Downloaded some assets with padestrian and bike paths combined. I went overkill. A bit less now but bikelanes rock!
As an experienced player I wasn't sure if I'd watch this series, but I am loving it. Keep them coming! Would be great to get some late-stage game tips too when you get to that point
I find this series helps me focus on the important, fundamental things which can easily break down a city. If I don't actively think about those sorts of things, I tend to overlook them, so for me this series is "practice makes perfect". lol
I think a one way collector coming into and going around the fountain in your tourism district would have been a cool idea to disperse some traffic. In that case I would have made a one way coupling instead of the 4 lane road you had T'ing into the fountain (you could have added bike infrastructure in the median) with a one way loop into the district and around the fountain, hope this makes sense. Also I think expanding the grid in that area and more local connection to outside the community, plus getting rid of that toll booth (you might do that, the video isnt over lol) would really help disperse trips onto other roads. Awesome video/series! Thank you for the awesome content you provide, it is really appreciated. I always feel like I learn something watching your videos, and it makes the experience so awesome. I just got a PC and downloaded my hometown city map (Halifax NS) and I was wondering if you could do a tutorial/more videos like the one you did on Venice, Florida. I thought that video was crazy informative and interesting as a history and a city guy. Happy Holiday's to you and your family CPP!
@25:00 So wiseass comment here but bike infrastructure contributes to your city's/country's economy though in a great way so I find it somewhat reasonable that there's no extra cost associated with that (I mean that you can't look at the cost of the road in isolation). But it would be really nice to have a mechanic in the game that sort of calculates the road construction/maintenance cost to be higher but then benefits your commercial that is adjacent to it by a multiplier - I don't believe there is such a connection in the game now, I'd be amazed if there is? IRL walkability and bike use does result in higher commercial use much more than cars, at least that's what research tends to show. Not to talk about reduced cost in healthcare etc...
Man, my commute to college became so much better when they added a bike lane on the collector I had to travel on. I had to choose between riding a collector where people typically went 45-ish mph and we're often hostile vs the sidewalk of said collector, which isn't exactly safe and significantly slowed me down at every driveway. They also banned bikes on sidewalks around downtown. It makes sense given how busy the sidewalks were. It was a pretty small portion of the town, but it totally made sense and at least they had the decency to add bike lanes through there.
Hey, no idea whether you'll see this on an old video. I just got to the part of you creating a metro connection from the new tourism district. A couple of options, I thought you'd be able to go under the water by stepping down twice, then coming back up. Maybe you tried that. Another option is an above ground bridge, but maybe you haven't unlocked that option yet (I think it's a later DLC). A third option would be a commuter train going around the bay.
that path where you demonstrated "if you upgrade this the pedestrians will disappear" in your university. there was space for a parallel bike path that might look very nice a few parallel bike and pedestrian paths in your university. (because I noticed more than one spot where that could work)
Enjoyed the video. I really enjoy hearing your insights on what would or wouldn't happen in real cities. Thank you for all the time and energy you put into these videos. Much appreciated.
if it were up to me with going around the bay, I would've used a monorail. Even though you get a lovely view of the sewage facilities, I feel like it'd be more touristy, and being along the road can be useful for any future stops/connections.
Nice video! The transit connections on the “island” could really be better to help the traffic though. There’s no good connection between the ferry and the tourism areas, and I feel not having a direct metro line hurts too (you’re forcing 1-2 transfers right now)
There's a prison off of US Route 34/67 (also known as the Chicago-Kansas City Expressway... Which is Route 110? Been a few years since I lived in that neck of the woods....) when you come up from Monmoth, IL the west to Galesburg, IL quite visible from the highway. The highway really butts up against the facility so there isn't a lot of hiding it. I also enjoyed the signs saying... "Don't pick up hitch Hikers" along that stretch.
I work on a retail park with highway access one way to a Parkway rail connection, a football a stadium, a hotel with expo, a budget hotel, and .. bike lanes throughout, including a shared path past the high school and a residential no cars cut through. 😀
For anyone who doesn't know, unlocking the Driving Range Unique Building does not also unlock the Ice Fishing Pond Unique Building included with the Snowfall DLC, despite the two Unique Buildings sharing the same unlock requirement (5,000 Squares of Tourism Specialization Built). You have to unlock them both separately.
Yo, you r insane. Good speech, nice voice and the city.. bro, I’m a fan of this type of games, but I can’t create smth big and make it work, you know. You took my sub. Have a nice day/night!
Seems to me there would be fewer people driving into the new neighbourhood if there were better bus and ferry connections. As it stands in order to take a ferry you have to get to the Zoo first. Overall it seems like the road connection was appropriate, but it was over used because it was essentially the best way to get there, because the transit connections are too limited.
Kingston, Ontario, has 7 "Correctional Facilities", two federal correctional service buildings, one provincial (a.k.a. state) correctional service building, and three museums (one of which was a Maximum Security Penitentiary that closed only 5 years ago and 'might' reopen again after they finish upgrading it). Two of the Pens are located on major roads (Arterials?) and look like Castles. Where I come from, People do get warm and fuzzy about prisons. 🙃
Not sure what the end game is for this series but I think it’d be cool to have an episode where you bring in all the content creator packs and add some of them throughout. Also, I’ve been playing this game since it came out but I love watching this series-I can still learn things and it’s just entertaining lol
To help the traffic I would connect the National highway and wrap it directly around to the main road running through the tourism and leisure area. That way they can funnel directly into town with out making the left hand turn.
I know this is old now but I'm kinda predicting what should be done as I'm learning this. A good half or more of all that traffic out to the leisure/tourist districts are trucks with goods. A train from the industrial districts alone might ease up a massive chunk of that traffic. Also them blimps might be a solid way of getting tourists from the freeway on the other end of the city down there and would be very touristy in theme. Those two things alone might cut traffic by a good 60% or more. Maybe another ferry route, or multiple ferrys from the highway all the way down, and then some cable cars directly from the ferry to the district. It's almost like there's two games here. One is building the city, and the other half (or more) is traffic optimization. And hopefully the sewage waste filtration gets moved soon now that all the beach tourist centers are there. That's gotta be a smelly place to jet ski and play volleyball.
The prisons that I am familiar with in my area are out in the open, far away from any forested areas, (I live in the PNW) I always thought this was for security - easier to see an escapee if they have a wide field to cross before they get to cover. Maybe I am wrong, but tucking a prison in a well "concealed" space seems like a bad idea at least in real life.
You might want to rethink all those trees around that prison. There's a county jail in the median of I-95/Route 128 Southwest of Boston and there are no forests to block the view and there's a loop road high security fences around the jail keeping the inmates in. But there is a line of trees next to the fence.
Add more trees and garden parks for every few houses in between , and with walkway then it will reduce less noisy and healthy environment for residents. one more thing, you can put 2 blocks away with the road and building, for future expanding wider road, trees or walkway in front of the building and houses.
A better option to help the power jump to the prison may have been a road maintenance facility. Not sure which which dlc that is included in, but road crews in the US are often staffed by inmates and it would make sense to have it next to the highway as well.
haha as always enjoy videos and every video there is something you say that jumps out as america, it is usually about public transportation, having a US centric view of it haha, this time it was about the prison being in a place people do not want to see, and immediately thought about ones inside towns and cities because of historical location and development prior to the existence of cars. as soon as you said it a few popped into my mind haha
It's kind of funny that the ferries, when they turn inward, it's like it's going to crash into the piers. They could've made them back up then make their turn and on their way.
Dense vegetation around a prison doesn't keep the prisoners in. It makes it easier for them to hide from security sweeps and escape. Prisons usually opt for much longer sight lines so less guards are needed to survey the surrounding landscape. Granted, this is why prisons are more likely in rural areas.
I've been considering getting the game next time I see it on sale, and I am quite enjoying your walkthrough overview of the game and its DLCs. Watching this episode I feel compelled to inquire; given that a tourism/leisure district is a pretty solid visitation hub, might having a train/metro hub be a solid mass transit connector for such an area? You have the ferries, true, but they're sot of a roundabout way of getting there, especially since the ferries seem to be pedestrian only, so that's a fairly long walk to the leisure district that way. You have a single metro stop here if memory serves, but that's a pretty long round trip depending on how many passenger trains you currently have active. Given the large apparent visitation drive of the districts, more dedicated mass transit options feels like a good idea since the tolls are, as you pointed out, not discouraging anyone from going by car. (Yes, I'm aware this series is likely finished as I type this, but I wanted to give my thoughts with the current build in progress given the methods you had tried using in this video.)
im completely clueless of what to do with leisure specialization, so i just build a couple of roads, add a few parks depending on how large it is, then zone. so i hope this can help me get better.
Since I'm from Europe, the way you talk about biking feels so weird. Because in europe you can bike pretty much everywhere and until like when WW2 happened, everything was also build quite around the bike, afterwards since it had to be built up quick again cause of the destruction, bike-lanes were less of a priority, but in the majority of smaller towns dedicated and separate (more importantly) bike and pedestrian lanes Curbwalks, are the more common site, than painted on bikeways on streets.
Was there a reason no public transportation was added between the ferries and cable cars to the tourism and leisure area? Like a bus or something? I feel like that may have encouraged more use of the ferries there instead of the road. Or do the ferries take cars too?
I hope you have a coast guard station nearby to handle all those poor people driving their vehicle/bikes off the road/paths alongside the ocean w/o guardrails to protect them!
I know I'm quite a few eps behind, but would it not be worth using one of the terminals at the giant train station to link up the tourist district with less transfers?
At around 5:10 you mentioned mods. I hope this goes along the lines of a vanilla plus route where its not super game changing mods and more so ones that just improve player experience while keeping the core of the game there.
He mentioned Move It so my guess would be “yes”. Tbh I think the most popular mods do what you say. TM:PE, Network Multitool, Prop Line Tool, Fine Road Tool, Intersection Marking Tool, (good god I just noticed how many end with “tool”), Road/Prop/Quay Anarchy, roundabout builder, etc. Really all just functional or time-saving mods. You can do a lot of what they do in vanilla, it’s just a major pain-in-the-ass.
Finally, we get bikes, leisure, and tourism!

Shoot - I'll get that fixed!
"Accidentally", huh?
Good way to reduce government spending :O
Tfw you accidentally rp a Latin American city. >.>
Damn never thought of that
Because of you, i just bought cities skyline park life/industries/mass traffic /campus on steam ! You are doing such a great video . Thanks you for your work 😊
Haha, I had to buy After Dark after watching this video. Annnnddd I spent 35 on content creator packs :| lmao
Thank you and take care, CPP!
Why are these videos infinitely calming
As an experienced player I wasn't sure if I'd watch this series, but I am loving it. Keep them coming! Would be great to get some late-stage game tips too when you get to that point
I find this series helps me focus on the important, fundamental things which can easily break down a city. If I don't actively think about those sorts of things, I tend to overlook them, so for me this series is "practice makes perfect". lol
XD
Love the, 'its not ideal but i can live with it' then ten seconds later fixing it that occurs at various points across this series. same😂
Fellow Wisconsinite here, just stumbled across your channel a few weeks ago and LOVE the content!
5:35 city planner plays denying that he did not respect topography.
Hey, Monument Park was me! Awesome!
that path where you demonstrated "if you upgrade this the pedestrians will disappear" in your university. there was space for a parallel bike path that might look very nice a few parallel bike and pedestrian paths in your university.
Could put one stoo near the reserve and it would also help thoose houses and ppl working on the waste and sewer facilities.
Definitely understood the Columbia Penitentiary reference, also reminds me of the prison in Stanley WI
Nice video! The transit connections on the “island” could really be better to help the traffic though. There’s no good connection between the ferry and the tourism areas, and I feel not having a direct metro line hurts too (you’re forcing 1-2 transfers right now)
when you get casinos, you should make a casino strip or an adult area (like a red zone)
4:50 yes, it is great to live next to a highway, when you try to resocialize
I work on a retail park with highway access one way to a Parkway rail connection, a football a stadium, a hotel with expo, a budget hotel, and .. bike lanes throughout, including a shared path past the high school and a residential no cars cut through. 😀
That tsunami of sad faces in the background at 8:35. 👀
Well this has to be the first youtuber I've learned is from Wisconsin! Howdy neighbor!
This is a great series. It’s an awesome guide for cities skylines noobs like me
Not sure what the end game is for this series but I think it’d be cool to have an episode where you bring in all the content creator packs and add some of them throughout.
Happy holidays! Thanks for the entertainment as always :-)
What about bus service from the ferry into Mill Heights and your new district. Great video!
you already know! for the algo!
That's gotta be a smelly place to jet ski and play volleyball.
i love how caring you are about your prisoners lol
After Overcharged eggs'perience, you shud rename the monument park to Stone Hens park
A better option to help the power jump to the prison may have been a road maintenance facility. Not sure which which dlc that is included in, but road crews in the US are often staffed by inmates and it would make sense to have it next to the highway as well.
They’re in Snowfall.
haha as always enjoy videos and every video there is something you say that jumps out as america, it is usually about public transportation, having a US centric view of it haha, this time it was about the prison being in a place people do not want to see, and immediately thought about ones inside towns and cities because of historical location and development prior to the existence of cars. as soon as you said it a few popped into my mind haha
It's kind of funny that the ferries, when they turn inward, it's like it's going to crash into the piers. They could've made them back up then make their turn and on their way.
A grand bridge across the bay would help traffic by adding alternative route and a point of visual interest for the city.
good idea, as for the moment the new district is a gigantic cul-de-sac, as Phil likes to say
Bars near a University. Woah woah woah, chill down there buddy
It’s so funny how CPP just has to add landscaping to make a PRISON look nice. No judgment he pulled it off
Great video !! Love to watch your Cities: Skylines videos.
what does "to call a mullingan" mean? (english is not my first language)
52:46 Also this is a limit of the game. Esp for the 4 lane road with bike lanes you could habe easily trees in the middle
Great Episode as Always 🤗💚
For a guy who loves landscaping, he sure didn't try to abate the wind turbine noise with trees
Great episode! But I do think the metro line to the new district should be above ground, at least for the part when it's going next to the motorway
Agreed, even elevated would look extra cool and planned out.
