    The Church Av yard tour is probably some of the most delicious footage you've ever posted. To the best of my knowledge never been filmed like this, let alone in hi-def. This is such a great little present... like a hidden track on your favorite 1990s compact disc. Thank you WTAE for tantalizing all us transit nerds!

    Fun facts about the G line (according to Wikipedia):
    1. G trains had originally ran to Forest Hills-71st Av starting in 1937, with late night service cut back to Queens Plaza. In 1990, G trains replaced the R to Jamaica-179th St during late nights (N and R trains swapped to their current terminals in 1987). Starting in 1997, G trains began to permanently terminate at Court Square on weekends. Late night service to/from 179th St was cut back to Court Square later in 1997. In 2001, G trains were cut back to Court Square on weekdays in order to make room for the V; when the V was not running on weekends and late nights, the G was extended back to Forest Hills. Starting on April 29, 2010, G trains were permanently cut back to Court Square due to the MTA's financial crisis at that time.
    2. Additionally, G trains had originally terminated at Smith-9th Sts, but they were extended to Church Av in 1968 with the introduction of the F express. They were cut back to Smith-9th Sts in 1976 due to budget cuts. In 2009, G trains were extended back to Church Av due to an overhaul of the Culver Viaduct.

      Another cool fact - Nassau Avenue was once the original southern terminal for the G/ IND crosstown line, hence why the interlocks right north of the station.

    • @anonymous3738
      @anonymous3738 Месяц назад

      Rather than short-turning all G trains at Court Sq, some could continue to Forest Hills with the rest terminating at 21st St via the center track (which currently acts like a diamond crossover). Also, some local trains could continue to 179th St due to its large storage capacity. When many different lines merge with each other, instead of only using some connections and leaving the others unused, they should prioritize the lines that don’t allow short-turns, such as 63rd St or 60th St. As for Crosstown, some trains can short-turn at 21st St as mentioned in the beginning and some trains from 53rd St can short-turn at Queens Plaza using the center track between the express tracks since they haven’t yet merged with (express) trains from 63rd St.

Sure made it easier to get home at night from work or one train to hang out at the queens center mall. Another thing I miss were the rare times that the G would run down to Coney Island because of work on the F, and they’d run a set or two of either R-32s or R-42s on the G during that weekend.
    Fun fact - I remember when some of the stations along the G still had the 7 car stop mark from when the IND ran 7 car consists.

      @nichols15:
      Good observation. I wonder why the TA blocked this space with concrete blocks. Another interesting area of keen interest to railfanners is the complex flying junction at 6th Ave/ 53rd St of the IND 6th Ave/8th Ave interlocking. Some of the ramps carrying level changes are also blocked from the RFW view of them by later-built concrete walls. The concrete walls were built well-after the lines were newly opened for service, so this indicates the concrete walls are not load-bearing tunnel supports. Did the TA build them to prevent trackworkers from falling down a descending ramp? Or maybe to prevent a derailed train from crossing over and falling down the ramps? I doubt that's the reason because the TA would have added concrete walls to the various descending/ascending level changes at the vast W 4th St interlocking of the 6th Ave/8th Ave lines, so who knows?

      Great observation and question. This transfer was placed as it is the first station where a transfer to the F is possible on via the upper level. The lower level access continues to be “out of service,” at this time. 🫡

    Now that this dynamite video has been up for a week and it's a new year I thought I'd share my WTAE 2024 wishlist. I'm not greedy so it's very short and is mostly driven by my desire to see some more behind the scenes relay and yard footage like the end of this one. Like I mentioned video of some of these post-end-of-line is nonexistent and even clear still photos next to impossible to find. Short of saying "please WTAE just show us every out of service yard and relay in the system", I distilled it down to a few juicy goodies - all IND:
    1) Storage and relay yard east of Jamaica-179 St at the end of the QBL (F).
    2) Something, anything coming or going from 174 St yard (C) train.
    3) Something, anything coming or going from Jamaica Yard.
    4) Tail tracks north of 96 St SAS (Q).
    5) Tail tracks beyond Norwood-205 St on the Concourse Line (D)
    and last but not least, and to come full circle, an (F) train video with peak direction lower level running to/from Church Av
    These are the things I desire. These are the things I need. 😁 Please WTAE, work your magic and make it happen. And THANKS for making us subway nerds so consistently happy with your outstanding videos. 😍HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!🎉

    Awesome ending of the Church Avenue yard. But MTA is so hellbent on extending the (G) train back to Forest Hills and since the (M) have been cut back to 57th Street that should've been a consideration to bring the (G) back there. Also have five cars on the (G) is horrendous 8 to 10 cars would be a much better choice. The MTA neglects the (G) train's potential.

  • @madisonsinclair5123
    @madisonsinclair5123 6 месяцев назад +2

    So here’s a dumb question: I see an awful lot of litter and trash down there in the Church Ave. Yard. How does it get there? I assume there are explorers and Vandals, who get down there somehow, but still, that seems a lot to me. Are transit workers just throwing their trash on the tracks? 🤔
    I also assume there are security concerns, which is why there’s not a lot of footage of this kind of behind-the-scenes stuff. But I further assume the bad guys already know their way around down there.

    I've been binge watching a lot of these and noticed that this train operator stops way short of the tunnel while most others stop at the mouth of the tunnel. Are these stations longer, the train length shorter, or is it just his style?

    • @wtaenyc
      @wtaenyc  25 дней назад

      Great observation and question. This is because the G train currently only uses 5 train cars, versus the common 8/10 on other lines. This then causes the difference in station stops, based on the station. 🫡

      GT - “Grade Time” - ‘the time it takes for a train to travel between two points considering the grade (slope) of the track.’
