    Jean Harlow and Robert Williams
It's like any Irene Dunne movie where you ask yourself "is it scripted or is there ad-libbing?"... Either way it's an incredibly cute scene between the two and Jean's soft giggling is just charming.

Jean Harlow was in fact a excellent actress, passed away at a young age, but her work is still available for people to view, and you won't be disappointed.

So heartbreaking that they both died so young. This was Robert Williams only leading role. He died 3 days after the film premiere. He would have had a great career.

"Platinum Blonde" is a very underrated film by today's standards, but it is one of Frank Capra's best films.Jean Harlow received most of the publicity from this film since she was fresh from the success of "Hells Angels" the previous year, and she was just twenty years old at the time. Most people talk about the scenes between Harlow and Robert Williams, but it is Loretta Young who actually steals the film from them. Her character of Gallagher is the one the audience is rooting for, her performance is very low key, but essential for the success of the movie. The final scene where Smith finally admits his love for Gallagher is very endearing, and brings the film to an unforgettable climax.Loretta Young received top billing for the film, and was just eighteen years old at the time.

Definitely! Great scene and in 1931! Robert Williams deserved an Oscar nomination, his naturalness seems ahead of its time. Great movie.

Saw this film last night on TV. I was captivated by the lead actor. I'm an old film buff and, at first, I thought it was a young William Powell without the mustache. Then, I realized it wasn't. I thought, "This guy is a GREAT actor!" What a tragedy that Hollywood wasn't able to enjoy Robert Williams ever again. He would have certainly been a huge star if he'd not died so tragically young, right after this film was made.

When I first saw this film I had the exact same reaction--I was captivated by Williams. He had IT. I was crushed when I looked up his biography after viewing the film. He would have been as big as Gable and Cooper if he had lived. He was SO good.

    • @eclecticlosangeles

You're absolutely right! He would've been HUGE if he'd lived. He certainly did have IT! Such a shame that no one even speaks about him anymore. Glad to hear that you had the same reaction as I did when first seeing this remarkable actor.

It’s so tragic that both of these stars died so young. If only Robert Williams had a little longer and made more films with Jean Harlow, what a fabulous team. They were both sad losses to those who loved them and to cinema audiences

This was one of the few Harlow films I'd never seen until it showed up on TCM some time ago. I spent the whole time thinking "How come I've never heard of Robert Williams? He's amazing!" Then I Googled him and found out. You can't really predict these things, but I don't see how this guy--fantastic actor, charismatic and likable, good-looking--wouldn't have been huge if he'd lived.

It's so nice to see natural acting with natural accents in this time period. The latter use of Mid-Atlantic accents and melodramatics in the late 1930s and 1940s is really annoying in modern times.

One my favourite films. Some have said that Jean Harlow was miss cast but this scene proves that comment is clearly wrong. Robert Williams reminds me a little bit of Bill Murray and is just fantastic in this. I really love them. They both died so young too. Need that time machine asap. Get baby Jean to an A&E and while Im at it rescue some of the many lost films.

Harlean Carpenter was very wealthy and was quite an intellect. She golfed at the Los Angeles Country Club, and on a dare she went to the Studio to see if she could get a part as an extra! The rest is History! She took her Mothers name and became The Great Jean Harlo! If one knew who she was in private, they would be astounded at her performance in Dinner At Eight! The girl was not just a Blonde Bombshell, She was a great actress!

A lot like Robert Donat with Madeleine Carroll in Hitchcock's film. He had Donat's touch. But who remembers him? He died young too. We don't realize what a miracle medical science is now. In those days you would step on a rusty nail and die. Lots of people died young. Child mortality was high. I wonder if today's med technology would have prevented both these great actor's lives.

Actually, the acting in pre-Code films (1929-1934) was pretty realistic to differentiate them from the miming and overacting of silent films. After the Hays Code was enforced, film acting became more theatrical once again, especially when some actors began employing that ridiculous Mid-Atlantic accent. The '40s were the worst with this type of 'classical acting'. But in the '50s, some actors like Marlon Brando et al. started bringing realism back to film acting.

A very interesting picture. Robert Williams was such a fine actor. Such a shame he croaked shortly after making this. Of course poor Harlow is terribly miscast and yet she's always a welcome presence nevertheless. Also a fine performance from gorgeous Loretta Young. Halliwell Hobbes and Walter Catlett are amusing. This is very much a Capra film as early as it may be and unless I'm mistaken Smith's funny scenes with the butler are repeated in a later film. And a great ending too!

This is really charming. Jean is great; so unforced and natural and funny.
I wonder what the point is, though. Is Jean annoyed that the guy's socks are always baggy and falling down? I guess so. They didn't have stretchy socks for men yet in the early '30s, that would stay up by themselves.

Never saw this flick despite being a Jean Harlow fan. Need to watch/find it as this scene IS adorable!
But WHY was washing BEHIND the ears a constant admonishment back then? Was it bc of the grease men used to slick back their hair? And yet mothers would also scold their young sons to “wash behind your ears!” ...what the heck? That’s an unheard directive today, I don’t get it! WHAT exactly caused this dirty ear problem back then??

    PIE,
This scene proves to me that
The Hayes Office Code was as Big
    A Mistake and Misguided as
Prohibition was in the 1920's and
to add to that the deaths of two
up & coming Stars: Jean Harlow and Robert Williams. You also have add
Loretta Young to the mix as well.
