I'm guessing the airliners pilots were high as kites, since they were smiling the whole time and their heading was 420 degrees.
Wow i though bearings only went to 360, I guess the plane was high too if it reported 420 degrees.

They could have potentially avoided the F-4 but the DC-9 has very limited view with their windows so I think that the f-4 had a much better chance of seeing the DC-9 considering they have a large view of sight in the canopy

I suppose (theory) that the military pilots were used to high-altitude flights and that if there's a potential collision they can easily identify it on the radar. They are accustomed to trusting the instrument systems.
I always wonder what the final seconds are like for people inside a plane as it falls to the ground in a explosion.
Is it instant death? Do you feel any pain? Do you actually see a giant fireball coming straight at you before it instantly goes black?

No idea but it's interesting knowing it takes 100ms for a human to feel pain before the signal has been relayed on to the brain. So even if you died within 99ms or less you probably wouldn't feel it 💁don't count me on that one.

According to the video, they might have missed each other if the F4 had just kept flying straight on. It was the F4’s raised starboard wing that sliced into the DC-9. Or, if the F4 had just pushed the nose down instead of trying to turn away to the left, the accident may have never happened. I wonder what sort of collision avoidance training the military pilots get?

From what i see.. The f4 pilot turned to the left and pitched down because the plane was coming from right... But it was already too late and it made the right wing lift up and slice off the cockpit.

What? That's not some cheapskate tactic, the entire point of the system the wasn't working was to allow them to fly at high altitude, it wasn't working so they flew low. It's pretty simple and wouldn't have been a problem at all if the Phantom's pilots didn't fly through a civilian airway while both pilots weren't paying attention. It's also through incidents like this that we learn the lessons that we now consider common sense, like the fact that this incident was key to making military aircraft contact civilian air traffic controllers.

Let me re-evaluate:A DC-9 that has a tail of a Boeing 717 takes off from the taxiway and collides with an f-4 just because some random dude wanted his plane back.
you do know the 717 is basically a next gen dc-9 right? DC-9 became the MD-90/95 and then the 717 when Boeing bought out McDonnell Douglas?
The rest of it, yeah. Seems like some big brass wanted his plane, and 3 pilots and a RIO all had their heads out of the game.

This is the biggest coincidence I’ve ever seen, the jet just happened to have to fly low on the ground that day, the planes somehow met, both pilots in the F4 were looking at something, the pilots in the DC-9 were having a conversation, and all of this happened at the wrong time
To be fair to the commercial pilots, they weren't expecting to see a fighter jet at that altitude. F4 could have been paying more attention, but then again I don't know what it takes to fly an F4, so he was probably checking something important. Its an unfortunate circumstance.

I was 9 yrs old and playing in my front yard with my friends that afternoon. Our house was about 10 miles from the accident site, but the sound of that crash was horrific. The resulting concussive force was incredible and the ground shook at our home like a small earthquake. A very sad day for the Marine Corps and the families of those lost on the DC 9.

DC-9 had the right-of-way.
The worst part was that the pilot in the F-4 should have been able to eject. But the ejection seats had a critical error having to do with some weird circuitry that made it so the pilot couldn't eject if his buddy in the back ejected first.
I can only imagine what went through his mind as he realized his ejection seat wasn't working.

The cause was lack of coordination between civilian and military air traffic. Procedural changes were made to prevent conflicts after this accident.
My mother lives near a small civilian airport and relatively close to a military base so she gets helicopters and small aircraft flying by her all the time. Well, she found an app that allows you to track the transponders of passing aircraft and she was surprised to be picking up a signal from the military craft. Well, thanks to this series (and this episode in particular) I was able to tell her that military aircraft flying in civilian airspace are required to coordinate with and be trackable by civilian air traffic control so they avoid mid air collisions.

Happy Happy only blame the marine corps because the navy, Air Force, and army don’t ever get informed of this kind of stuff unless it’s involving them. This didn’t involve anyone but the marines so blame them
i highly recommend watching smithsonian air disaster videos out loud without wearing headphones before boarding your plane/while waiting to make sure you come prepared with the unthinkable as well as potentially make your flight private because everyone's ditching their trip thanks to your videos

Totally the resposibility of the F-4 which is smaller, more maneuverable, under vfr and on the left to “see and avoid” the dc-9, which is under ifr and relies on atc for traffic separation.
The f4´s radar was broken without oxygen so the f4´s was trying to see so not their fault

Szymon Gorczynski in the full episode they mention that both pilots were actually captains (hence the 4 stripes) but that one of them was the first officer of the flight.
They did say "also very experienced"... possible to have 2 captains with one serving as First Officer... though it sure as hell didn't help much.

Too be honest, I believe the jet is more at fault than the commercial jet, the jet was flying directly towards the plane, so they would be looking forward, the commercial was not

I think that it's not any pilot's fault but military fault if anyones. Or the guy who confirmed how high they can fly
The military jet had a radar pointed directly at the commercial jet the whole time, plus during military flights there is a ground control to prevent exactly this

the F-4 pilot is busy monitoring his instruments. It's still the Airforce's fault as to why they still release their F-4 with non working air pressurization and oxygen system and let it fly on busy airspace which has no room for combat aircrafts like the F-4 Phantom. They maybe even didn't let commercial aviation know of their presence in the area. Why? because they're The US Airforce.....the best in the world
