  • This is how to install a rear-facing only seat on an airplane, from a CPST. As always, don’t forget to refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions!

Thanks for this video. Do you have any link for FAA-approved infant car seat you recommend?

Hi! Almost all car seats on the market are FAA approved (with a few exceptions). If you already have an infant seat and like the way it works, I recommend sticking to it since you know how to use it. You can look on the seat for wording that says it is approved for use on airplanes (I am always happy to help if I know what the car seat is). If you do not yet have a seat, most infant seats are approved for use on an airplane, generally by using the infant seat without the base, which gives an excellent fit in most seats. Whether you bring the base for use at your destination is up to you. Some infant seats have euro belt touring paths for a baseless installation that makes them especially wonderful for traveling. I sometimes use this link as a starting point for caregivers to get their bearings and think about what features they like and dislike. And I always recommend a trip to a store that carries what you are considering when possible to see if you like how it feels in person.

Does this keep the passenger in front from reclining their seat? Have you ever experienced a passenger getting angry for not being able to recline?

Yes, in many instances the plane seat in front will either be able to recline only a little or not at all. I only ever experienced one angry passenger, but per FAA guideline (that I usually printed out and brought along just in case), the airline must make reasonable accommodations for a paid ticket. So if a passenger was really angry or complained, likely one of you could be moved to another seat within the same class

Hi! Wouldn’t baby go in the car seat first before installing the seat belt?

You can install whichever way makes you comfortable. I find it’s easier to tighten a lighter car seat (sans baby) and I can put my hand in the seat to assist tightening. But ultimately, do what works for you! Just make sure it’s properly tight- not moving more than one inch side to side
