- A fundamental monument of the keyboard repertoire, the Goldberg Variations were composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1741. Thirty variations grouped in ten groups are preceded and culminated by an aria. Jean Rondeau plays this central theme of the work on the harpsichord, to which he adds a short improvised prelude, following the practice of the baroque period.
