France’s leading young harpsichordist performs works by two masters of the French Baroque. No surprises there, perhaps … but the harpsichordist in question is Jean Rondeau and the album is called Vertigo. It conceives the harpsichord in vividly theatrical terms. Vertigo takes its name from a dramatic, rhapsodic piece by Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer, who, along with Jean-Philippe Rameau, forms the focus of this album (recorded in the sumptuous Château d'Assas on its magnificent harpsichord).

This is the most METAL thing I've ever heard on harpsichord!
it is hardcore techno - also ;)
listen to la marche des scythes by this same composer
That particular harpsichord leaves me at a loss for words. It is an amazing instrument. (and so is the performer)
And yet you found twenty to leave a comment.
@@chopin65 lol
Its amazing that that instrument is from the 1600s and is still working
Thought to be Donzelague 1716
it's the space that ultimately shapes the sound - but of course everything you mention plays a big role too.
I have played this piece many times on my Henri Hemsch harpsichord. And I have listened to it played on several other instruments and by several other artists. None can compare to the exquisite interpretation, inspiration and passion with which Monsieur Rondeau has infused this miraculous composition.
Indeed, Rondeau is a true master
Gratitude infinie !
I've just got to say in a lifetime of loving the instrument, I do find Hempsh a tad heavy. But in Jean's excellent hands, technique, and thoughtful expression redefine what we've come to know.
I only wish Ramau, or Couperin, were here to hear his interpretation. Damn, he's brilliant.
And here I am, good sir, feeling pain that there's no one around that could play this for me. :(
He was born to play that instrument. He leaves the listener breathless. A shattering experience.
The harpsichord sounds very limited to many modern listeners used to concert grands, but great 18th century musicians poured their full passion into these little instruments. Rondeau gives us a wonderful sense of the emotion that the original harpsichordists brought to their playing.
CKB I prefer the harpsichord to be honest
This modern vision of seeing the harpsichord only as the little and diminished version of the piano needs to be given up. These are two different instruments.
they're both good for different stuff, if you were a synth player, you wouldn't use a grand piano patch for every song right?
Oh there is nothing little about this instrument.. two coupled keyboards and multiple stops all ringing together produce a very powerful sound!
@@makytondr8607 It's size still doesn't come close to comparing to a grand piano, nor does its sound.
A top-notch performance, by a top-notch performer, on a top-notch instrument, recorded and engineered by top-notch engineers. Kudos all around!
Composed by a top notch composer.
Filmed by a top-notch cameraman.
One of the things I love about this recording is that the audio engineering is outstanding. You can hear the sympathetic vibrations of all the strings and the resonance of the instrument, e.g. when Rondeau waits for the sound to fade away at 3:50-3:54, at the end of the piece, etc. A lot of harpsichord recordings don't manage to capture that stuff.
This is perhaps one of the best period harpsichords in the world, recorded with some of the greatest equipment of our time.
Altogether an awe-inspiring performance, enough to give me goosebumps! Bravo.
Or maybe it's just a replica and that's it
the description of the video literally says that the harpsichord was made for the Chateau the piece was recorded in.
This is SO f***ing metal 🤘🏻 Incredible piece and performance. The goosebumps I get are euphoric...and this recording? *chef's kiss*
It does an outstanding job of accentuating the power as well as the emotional diversity of the instrument. The soft passages sing, whereas the powerful ones pummel you into submission!
I almost had a stroke... The contrast between the delicate parts and the more rapid ones is fantastic.
Welcome to the baroque
@@arnoldrivas4590 i almost have a stroke like please dont break it. But im sure the maker wouldve LOVED this and the fact three are alive?! Something to be said for old people not letting you touch shit! Haha
Pure metal. I love it
@@kathleenannmodina-angue4540 Spot on! \m/
A stroque
Everyone who thinks the harpsichord cannot make any difference in dynamics, should watch this video
1
@Rafael Weston yea ive been blowing myself on deez nuts
@@Emole7Z 2
absolutely. A revelation
The harpsichord cant staccato, legato, forte or piano. So, yeah, it cant do dynamics.
The harpsichord is such an amazing instrument... it sometimes sounds like there are multiple instruments playing at once - a whole orchestra in the hands of one talented man!
I didn't know that a harpsichord would sound so powerful! I am absolutely amazed! :D
Great recording. Props to the engineer(s). Very full and forward. So many harpsichord recordings are too polite and quaint. This one really kicks, and I think it's awesome.
The kid is blessed by mother nature, beyond all reason...
Jean Rondeau gives me hope for a new generation of musical talent to revivify the classical world. Young people are turned off by the stodgy, uptight culture surrounding this music, and Jean actively defies that trend while delivering fiery interpretations of music that is often plagued by the sterile, clinical, and academic approach that is so popular today.
The young musicians are very ready to go. They need the opportunity to showcase their talents. Hopefully they will figure it out but I assure you they are there.
With love from the mom of two music majors
I'm not turned off by it at all. In fact the culture is what makes this music special.
@@EzekielGoldbergII Well, I usually am more into metal and edm, but this piece catched me. I for sure can underline this statement of a "stodgy, uptight culture" beeing a major turnoff. I feel like people who cant reinterpret music, beeing trapped in one place, are not living up to their full potential of creating something of their own.
Been a percussionist since I was a child and also gang banging since age 7. Had already been shot by age 11 and had lost homeboys by then. I'm 36(37 next month) and still fuck with percussion and my peeps that play piano, base, cello, violin/viola, and though I stopped being "active" in the gang game, none of us is uptight at all. Many of my Dawgs graduated from LACHSA and went on to do great things(still doing them now). We hail from Central LA(McArthur park/westlake/Pico Union area) South Central LA, watts and Compton. We ain't up tight at all and our kids in this shiet now(new generations and all) , so maybe speak for ya self? 🤷🏾♂️
Bellissimo commento
It's true! Bach said that if you put your fingers on the right keys at the right time, the instrument plays itself!
This young man is very gifted. How lucky I feel to visit his world for a few minutes. He's the best harpsichord player I've (ever) heard in all my years of listening to recordings and live performances of this instrument. Proud parents I guess, huh?
So well said!! I agree totally!👍👍🙏
A certified Warner classic🔥
That Harpsichord is so harmonically rich and that tone! Would love to know more... the Strad of Harpsichords
This harpsichord is from the castle of Assas in France. It is famous as it was the favorite of Scott Ross.
Beautiful tone that comes with an original French harpsichord. Superb playing.
French Sturm und Drang-the music and the performer both. Gorgeous!
So powerful and expressive. A genius composer and a truly gifted interpretation.
My middle school band conductor always had a poster of Mozart with the captions “Great musicians alway have great hair.” posted in his practice room so everyone can see. That’s statement held so true it should be a law.
isnt it a bit cheating if they usually wear wigs? i once saw Handel without a wig in some painting/image which showed his real hair, which was nothing😁
The harpsichord: the perfect instrument of all!!!!
Just discovered this piece today I can’t believe what I’m hearing! Everything is so unbelievable. Thank you for uploading.
I do not exaggerate: My hair stands on end, delicious goosebumps everywhere, and a particular euphoria overcome me every time I listen to this recording. I can't imagine more drama and excitement in a solo performance on a harpsichord, or perhaps any instrument.
Gorgeous all around. The piece, the player, the video. Perfection.
I love the sound of the harpsichord, always have, always will. ❤️
The moment the lid opened my heart jumped a beat. What an instrument! And what a player. Jean Rondeau must own a time machine, he transports us back to the baroque period so effortlessly and adds in his phenomenal technical skills on the instrument to give us a performance so superlative that it feels like the harpsichord (treated with such revernce in the opening scene) will escape from the castle and rampage all around Europe. Chapeau Jean!
I listened to this at 3 am, very loud
My neighbours called the police
The police obviously arrested them.
I generally think of harpsichord as thin and cold in tone, the bass and lower mids here are so incredibly rich!
Rich and deep bass with brilliant trebles are that hallmark of French harpsichord such as Blanchet, at the price of clarity that one finds in Italian harpsichord, or roughness of tone that can be found in Flemish instruments.
The Franco-Flemish is a paramount of its time, marrying the depth of French instruments with the texture of Flemish ones-see Ruckers-Taskin for a great example.
I adore the meaty sound of that harpsichord, and the performance is great of course. Sometimes it sounds like a whole orchestra. I imagine Vivaldi's Summer on this instrument.
I arrange music on harpsichord. Vivaldi's Summer challenge accepted.
Jean Rondeau regenerates the art of the harpsichord in giving new insights musically as well as technically. He has it all with an astonishing liberty of expression. Composer - interpret - listener are a triangle that Rondeau makes his and with an intransigent aesthetic. This aesthetic is always different and interesting with nuances rarely heard on this instrument. His “naturalistic” interpretation makes wonders. Thank you for posting videos of this truly extraordinary interpret !
Brilliantly said!
The guy is a savage. Love him. :)))
It’s funny how most posts on harpsichord performances focus their praise on the composer. It’s the performer who is delivering all of those lovey emotions... this guy has it. What an animal
@The Lucifer - I wasn’t trying to dismiss the talents of the baroque masters. The fact that we still learn and perform the music of Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Rameau, Couperin, and Royer, etc. 100s of years later is a testament to their talents. Having learned figured bass and counterpoint and after attempting to compose each a Cannon, Invention, Prelude, and Fugue; I have a better appreciation for the talents of these composers than most. However, I’ve also had the experience of listening to 1000s of hours of musicians practicing this music only to have the resulting performance fail to evoke any emotion other than pity for the performer. So when someone delivers a performance of this level, that evokes this much emotion, and doesn’t sound like the aural representation of an accountant at work; I think the performer deserves some of the adulation.
@@LogicalQ Hello @logicalQ. Thank you for your response. I am not sure I understand your comment since I highly praise the interpreter Jean Rondeau in my comment ! And by the way its more than 200 years since Royer composed this piece. Best regards
PERFECT HARPSICHORD!!! PERFECT PERFORMANCE!!! PERFECT PERFORMER!!!Jean Rondeau,BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!
For those who believe the past cannot live again, this demonstrates their error.
WOW. That was amazing. I didn't realize how rich the harpischord was until I heard this
Because of the meantone temperament
I guess it takes a young Frenchman with astounding talent to redeliver the musical gems of eighteenth century aristocracy.
incredible composition, extremely well played by Rondeau... and that instrument... WOW...
Nothing beats a harpsichord this so amazing 👏
High quality video. High quality playing. High quality guy.
Merci bien Monsieur Rondeau.
Qué genial elección de palabras :)
I have been obsessed with this performance for the last week, I can't get enough of it. Its beauty never ceases to amaze me.
ceases
You seize the day. Things cease to amaze.
@@SebastianDingleswitch I stand corrected
I ADORE Monsieur Rondeau as a deeply sensitive and passionate harpsichordist! Okay, the final cadence hanging on the dominant rather than the tonic SAFE resolution seems rather cruel, given the nature of the piece - a person terrified by heights, but it was already suggested in Lisa Goode-Crawford's modern Heugel edition of these sensational works. My beloved colleague Jean's rendition is similar to Alfred Hitchcock's terrifying film VERTIGO in the sense that even if the protagonist is saved from the height they're trapped within, do they ever psychologically recover or master such heights ever again? Mes felicitations, cher Jean: Bravo! 3> 3> 3>
The music is mad! Insane!...the playing is genius. Well done.
Music goes beyond... allowing the human being to find out its spiritual essence, giving us wings!
Very impressive, Jean! Your performance of Vertigo on harpsichord was absolutely stunning.
Elevating the music to new heights, you truly showcased your incredible talent and skill.
Rapturous applause erupted from the audience as they were entranced by the spellbinding sounds of your harpsichord.
The intricate and complex nature of the piece was executed flawlessly, leaving everyone in awe.
Incredible job, Jean. Your performance of Vertigo was a true masterpiece and a delight to experience.
Glorious and breathtaking, you have truly proven yourself to be a master of your craft. Once again, congratulations on a phenomenal performance!
Oh my, Jean!
1:13 best death metal breakdown of 18th century.
I can't avoid this...i must listen to it over and over and over again...absolutely wonderful!!!🤗🤗🥰👍
Bravo...
I've never heard this piece before. Not only that it as a fantastic piece of music, also the video is beautifully made, very esthetic 👍
BRILLIANT. Genius. Exquisite. Jean Rondeau brought back my love and appreciation of harpsichord.

Literally shredding right here, can't make this up
This is a totally thrilling performance which I come back to again and again! Thank-you so much Jean
!
mind boggling perfect music, being plaid perfectly--and on a real instrument.
He's wonderful, and a nicely filmed video, too.
emilyplayscello one of the first things i noticed is thevery high productuin qulality. the next is how hipster the sets for his videos are.
This instrument is a true masterpiece itself. Formidable!
All his videos are really well filmed and produced overall... He obviously has a very artistic production team behind him... It all adds to the magnificence of the pieces he plays and how beautifully and sensationally he executes them.
I've watched/listened to this at least 5 times today. So beautiful.
Performance is intense which I could not believe the fullness of the arrangement sounds like a full chamber! Wow! Awesome performance!👍👌👌👍👍🌹
I love such players who write their name first, the second name of the piece and the name of the composer in the parentheses!
I just listened to this with my ear pods on full volume and it sounds visceral.
Un musicien exceptionnel !!!
A true master of the harpsichord.
Formidable en tout ! Et magnifiquement filmé et capté aussi !
Merveilleux moment. Merci Jean
My heart is breaking apart again and again
Brilliant! Brilliant music and brilliantly played. I’ve always loved the harpsichord- I think I was 12 when I first heard Scarlatti, that was over 40 years ago! The sound is just so precise and the nuances in timing make it so special
I'm sold. The music, the instrument, and the player. Quite the force when combined. And thanks for introducing me to the composer dear Warner Classics.
Quelle pièce! Quel jeu! Quel instrument! Quel enregistrement! QUEL TALENT!..
1:44 left hand is just fantastic
Rather interesting to see such a young musician playing such an old harpsichord.
Never have I seen fingers twerk like that! 💖💖💖 This piece is superb I have always loved the harpsichord so divine in its own standing.
Genial! Amo esa forma de tocar Espero verlo algun dia interpretando de esa maravillosa forma VIVA JEAN !
It sounds rock. I love it. So lit 🔥🔥🔥
Full of passion
You are a king!!! Faaantastic🥲🙏🤗🤗🥰
The most beautiful sound
The videos made to promote this album are each so well done; everyone involved should be so proud of the results. The positioning of the instrument in the room at the start made me think of the reverence they had for the instrument and it’s history with Scott Ross. The acoustic captures in that space is divine. Rondeau’s interpretation is original he cares about affecting the listener. I hope someday to hear him live!
Thank you for making the huge effort of playing this so effortlessly on the harpsichord! I was feeling down but listening to this sublime rendering made me feel better and reminded me of how happy and carefree I used to be when I first listened to Bach's chaconne. Covid and stuff happened since then and I'm trying to be happier and care-free once again like back then but also in a better way. Anyways, thanks for giving me an outlet to speak, I feel like I don't have anybody I can tell these things these days. Kind of my fault also. Yeah that's all. I wish anybody who reads this has a happy day. Enjoy this piece guys!
